#14 Virginia Tech Mens Lacrosse upsets #3 BYU in National Championship Tournament

The Men's Club Lacrosse team just finished off the win in the first round of the National Championship Tournament by beating #3 BYU 11-6. It was a hard fought win, and BYU really lost their cool in the last couple of minutes with some ridiculous fouls. It was really fun to watch the Hokies get a great win tonight.

Tech should face the winner of #6 University of California-Santa Barbara and #11 California Polytechnic Institute-San Luis Obispo in the next round.

Awesome! Go HOKIES!

GO HOKIES!

Wow, this is awesome, especially coming on the heels of UVA getting ousted.

UVA is D1, we only have club. But one of my friends is on this team so I hope they win.

Rip his freaking head off!

Doesn't matter. If their delusional logic can equate a bunch of Olympic sport success to 10 years of dominance, there is zero difference between the NCAA lacrosse tournaments at the D1 and club (I assume D2) levels.

I don't remember hearing about a club lacrosse team when I was an undergrad, how old is the program?

I was at VT from 08-12 and it was there all 4 years. So it is at least 6 years old.

There were some lean years between the founding and the 1970s. Since then it has been going well. Since the advent of the MCLA and national championships the club has gotten stronger. They now have 3 conference championships (2 in the last three years) and played in at least 6 or 8 more. This is probably their 5th appearance at the Nationals.

The team/club formed post-WW2 went dormant sometimes in the 60s. In 1971, Major Kim Flint of the Army ROTC Department, and member of the West Point lacrosse team as a cadet, re-started the team. I was one of those who re-formed it as a player late 1971, one of the "Military Midfield" members. Coach Nachlas arrived on-scene during my sophomore year, 1972-73. Major Flint put a lot of effort into the team, getting us a field up at the newly-plowed Hokie Bowl, along with orange uniforms and painted helmets. Spring break for us was trips to Atlanta for tournaments.

Thank you for your military service and thank you for getting the club going again!

All right! Glad to see I am not the only lax player on this site. I was on the team 1981-84. Dave Gruber coached a couple of those years while Joel took a break. The program has come a long way and I hope to see them grow further. Maybe we'll get a National Championship soon. They started this tournament well.

Next up is UCSB (#6 seed). VT lost 5-4 to them back in March so should be a close game. I think the Hokies have improved since then.

Yea, well that was also during spring break if I remember correctly.

Rip his freaking head off!

Yeah.

BYU was ranked #3 in the latest poll and lost 15-8 to #2 CU in their conference final. UCSB lost a close one 8-6 to #1 AS in their conference semis and earlier lost to BYU 12-5. AS is undefeated for the season and looks to have both strong D and O. CU lost to AS 8-6. If you look at all the team records there are interesting results. CU's next game is against MSU, which beat them earlier in the year. But MSU also lost to BYU. Hokies look to have a good chance against the remaining competition.

The Hokie D is playing well and may have the lowest GAA in the country (I can't find any team rankings). Hard to get a good read on the rankings but based on stats and momentum VT may have an edge against UCSB.

It is in the fourth overtime right now. 6-6.

Edit: 5OT! This game is unbelievable! Both defenses have been stout. Not many good offensive chances from when I started watching.

Edit2:Now in 6OT! Our freshman goalie is playing lights out right now.

Do you have a link for where you are watching from?

Thanks, have a leg!

Heartbreaking loss there

Oww....tough way to lose. UCSB 7, VT 6 in 6th OT!
Hokies looked great, but exhausted.
Cool to hear 'Let's go....Hokies' on the feed.
Hokie Frosh goalie representing.
Great job Hokie Lax.

UCSB with the sudden death goal in the 6th OT. It was a very good goal by UCSB.

Freakin' turnovers due to exhaustion......

Played lacrosse at Tech my freshman and sophomore year and still know a bunch of the guys. Dan Gutermuth is a really good player and an even better guy and I really feel for him right now after that turnover on that last possession. But really a great showing for Hokie Lax this year.

Great year guys! Really stepping up your game and competing at the national level. Keep it going.

A heart-breaker, but a great way to finish. The guys were looking tired, were checking their sticks after each catch to see if they had the ball, passes were getting a little sloppy...but in OT 6, it's hard to get water from a rock! Very proud of each and every one of them. I hope UCSB goes all the way. But a big HOORAH to our Hokie lax men!

UCSB lost 12-10 to CU. It was tied after 3 but UCSB probably ran out of gas due to the 6-OT game. VT beating BYU was the only upset in the tournament so far. Only the final between #1 & 2 seeds is left. ASU beat CU earlier in the year so they look to be the favorite. ASU is playing for an undefeated season!
