Music Suggestions for the Marching Virginians!

Hello TKP!

I am the Executive Officer for the Marching Virginians and we are currently in the process of expanding our tune list. Im here to ask yall for some songs that you would like to hear the MVs play this season. Now before everyone starts clamoring for Stick It In, please know that I have absolutely no control over that. Thats all up to Whit and I will say nothing more on the matter as I dont want to give anyone false hope. What I really want to hear are your opinions on tunes could play that would get the whole stadium pumped up during games. This past season we added Light Em Up by Fallout Boy and we think it worked pretty well to that effect.

If you have a suggestion, please leave a youtube, grooveshark, or soundcloud link to the song so we can all listen to it if we havent heard it before.

Thanks everyone!

EDIT: Thank you everyone for your suggestions! We are currently going through all of them and there are a lot of good ideas. We like a lot of the tunes and they've definitely got us thinking. Feel free to come back and drop another suggestion if you think of something later this summer. Thanks again for the help!

MAKE IT HAPPEN AND WE WILL WIN FOOTBALL GAMES.

We've actually been playing that for awhile, unless they stopped after I left. Every time we go on defense we play it

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

Yep. We play an excerpt of this or Carmina Burana after a punt to signal the opposing offenses impending doom.

When I was a student from 2001-04 the Imperial March was played with regularity. Since I've graduated, I can't say I remember it being played once. Although, now in my old age, I require a thicker bourbon blanket at games which could be playing tricks on my memory.

The HTs also started playing this when the Corps marches down to the stadium. Fits so much better than during games.

IDK, if we can be the Terror Dome we were meant to be it fits just fine. I think they only do it on defensive 3rd downs.

They have played it in recent years, but usually only the very first time the defense takes the field. I think it should be far more frequent than that.

"Exit light..."

They definitely played it in ATL vs. BAMA last year. My friend from BAMA was jealous.

Would've traded it for a win though.

They play it during most games. Not as regularly as the drum cadence thing they do (which I love), but very often.

I agree. Love the Imperial March, but can't remember it being played very often recently

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

Can we do Benny Hill/Yakkity Sax when the opponent makes a mistake?

This would be hilarious

While I would enjoy this, we can't really do anything to make fun of the other team. Our job is to support the Hokies, so we play "yay we did good things!" stuff, not "haha you messed up" stuff.

So the "Hey we just sacked you...I think he likes it" is to support the Hokies? C'mon, the band is by and large the least disrespectful when it comes to your average fan. At least it was in my day.

He's no good to me dead.

Good point. Yeah we did our fair share of this kinda thing as recently as 2 years ago (as recently as I can vouch for). I do know that if we did anything seriously disrespectful, we'd get into trouble. Don't know what the average fan constitutes but I know the band is better behaved than the student section as a whole.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Also, printing out the opposing team's roster and yelling the punt returner's first name and bio details was "frowned upon" lol.

How about when the refs are in a replay review?

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

We already have a song for that situation:

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I for one would find it hilarious if you did a sarcastic rendition of the "Good Old Song" every time we make a big play against UVA. This happens frequently in my NCAA, probably due to a bug.

I wanted to say Carl Orff - O Fortuna because nothing pumps me up like that song. But when I googled to see if it was used anywhere, Redskins apparently use it as entrance music and the ASU band plays it after first downs.

(I think it would be crazy if the entire crowd sang the intro together.)

I think this is a great song for a football game, but I would love to see a Lane Stadium half filled with drunk people try to 'sing' this the first few times, that would be hilarious.

It might go something like this

I think you should bring back Da Butt. Just sayin'. Also Big Noise from Winnetka. I was distraught when they were removed from the book.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Doin' the butt, hey sexy, sexy

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I keep waiting for someone to make a joke about playing this after playing 'Stick It In', but no one has so far. It's probably for the best.

Pretty much anything from this side of 2000 would be a welcome change. Except Fall Out Boy. For the love of god, stop playing that 19 times a game.

If only the HT's could get Major McNeil to get a more recent song than "Impression That I Get"

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

I love most of the songs they play really. I was always kinda jealous. I wanted "Impression That I Get".

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I love the song too (which is amazing since I played it for 4 years) but it never struck me as a great pump up song.
I say we add another Metallica song to the repertoire - especially for when Rogers does, well, anything.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

This would be another good one

Hell yes! I have advocated for this song on here previously (as an intro for the bball team). I love the intro with the bells and the bass running through the fuzzed out wah pedal.

A year or two ago, Northwestern played this song whenever they scored when they played Mississippi State (known for their incessant cowbells) in a bowl game. It translated well to band instruments.

On a related note, we should talk to or tweet Whit about arranging for Metallica to play live at the Battle of Bristol (intros, halftime, and possibly post game). How cool would that be?

PLAY IMPRESSION RIGHT NOW! RIGHT FING NOW OR THE WORLD'S GONNA END!

i always liked how tennessee plays the gladiator theme after their defense gets off the field on third down

but i guess that would be ripping off tennessee.

the robert baratheon theme from game of thrones is pretty epic (good part starts at 3:58)

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

The Gladiator idea is a great one, but I'd much rather avoid it than be labeled a copycat of anything UTenn. Ripping off some Pac 12 school is okay, but Big Arnge is too close to home...

I agree with the concern for copying UT on anything, but I think when our Defense stops them repeatedly at Bristol if we did the Gladiator song, that would be EPIC!
Make it so!

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

I've always been big on songs that gets a lot of fan participation (which is why I feel "Stick it In" is the tits)...here are some ideas off the top of my head...these are more "goofball" as opposed to "intimidating".

HUGE proponent of the Wobble.

Now THAT - Wobble - is what I'm talking about! I might double my HC donation to just hear one time over the PA system, the phrase - 'All the shorties in the club... just back it up...'

There was a thread not too long ago that said instead of wobble baby wobble, why not gobble baby gobble, I thought it was a really good idea.....I mean reeeaaaally good.

P.S no clue who, but it was someone else's idea, not mine

They'll really get after ya

Incorporating some part of this epic tune (from the StarCraft II soundtrack) would be awesome:

In a similar vein, Hell's March from Red Alert could be cool

oh man, the memories that come flooding back with this one. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how well this would translate to the instruments the MVs play in the stadium. A lot of songs don't come across nearly as well as you'd hope they would.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

this could get the crowd going

I've been saying that we need to add this since I was a freshman, the appropriate time to play this seems obvious too.

Pompeii-Bastille

"Happy" by Pharrell would appeal to the younger crowd

Tyrod did it, Mikey!

As I consider myself a member of the younger crowd, I can attest that the younger crowd would not be happy with this being played, unless by younger you mean pre-college game attendees...

I really don't care for it either. I just hear it all the time. Thought it was a popular song for you younger chaps ;) however, being a music man myself, I could see the MVs doing interesting things with it

Tyrod did it, Mikey!

Play this one mang. Up the tempo a bit, come up with a robust arrangement with a strong beat and you just know that riff at 1:20 would sound screamin' with 60 trumpets (or however many you have now).

I really think one of the bands, probably y'all for size sack needs to get a good arrangement of enter sandman. It is the anthem of game days! And if the damn ADept wont play it on the speakers then the Band will!

By the way, awesome for doing this!

I think it'd be awesome if you guys played a Phish song. I know a lot of their stuff might not translate to the band format very well, but I can at least provide a couple of options that might work.

Julius

Axilla

Golgi Apparatus (Listen to the middle of the song for the interesting part)

BTW the Stanford marching band has also covered this song.

Cars, Trucks, Buses

And if you really want to blow people's minds:

YEM

If none of these strike your fancy, you can just pick from here.

Feel like we missed the boat with this. Seattle knows what's up.

Always wanted to hear this in Lane for DW4...

Actually this was added to the books for DW4. It was played maybe 3 times and didn't catch on so it got the axe quick. We also had Macho Man added for Macho Harris.

I really think trying to expand that deal to Williams and even Oglesby was the biggest mistake. Plus not a lot of people knew what we were doing. I for one didn't know anything about that song until we started playing it. haha.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Yeah this would be great. I forgot to put it in my original post. Me and my friends tried to start it in the stands, but nobody ever caught on.

This needs to have more legs.

I'll upvote that as a possible 'theme song' for special teams. Maybe play that when our punt return team comes on the field? Something along those lines?

Hey Ya -- OutKast

YES!!! A THOUSAND TIMES YES!!!

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

While nothing specific comes to mind, I'd just ask this reminder be put at the top of the list when you do construct your list - Any Song For Consideration Must Be From This Century - listening to golden oldies heavy metal or even old school rap doesn't make for a fresh new tradition. Please, just use a semi-fresh song.

I respectfully disagree. Carry on My Wayward Son is probably my favorite song the MV's play. And nothing will ever get me more amped than when the HT's play The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. I wouldn't be opposed to newer music as well, but if it's a good song, it's a good song, regardless of what era it's from.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

I understand what you're saying, but to put a finer point on it - we have enough old songs that are 'traditions'. If we want to create 'new' traditions, we need to remember the age of the potential customer base we're trying to appease. That age definitely skews way younger than (probably) you and (definitely) I. I like COMWS too, but we're not talking about replacing it, just adding new & fresh to it. People typically like most the music they liked when they were 15-25. Carry On My Wayward Son fits that for me. I want new music for the people who will be the alums of the next couple decades to hold.

That's a fair point. I can definitely see where you're coming from. I guess I just view the band's song selection less as a tradition and more as an entertainment that is constantly in flux. Obviously some of their songs are deeply rooted in tradition, like Tech Triumph, but as far as the contemporary stand tunes go, I would be fine if those completely changed every year, just as long as they're good songs. For me, 'good' just means catchy, energetic, and most importantly, widely recognized. I am part of the younger generation of fans, and I think I can speak for most of us when I say we'd get just as turnt for say, Led Zeppelin, as we would for any of the more modern hits.

Which reminds me, Kashmir by Led Zepplin would be an awesome stand tune.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

We played a Led Zeppelin show about 4 years ago and I asked for Kashmir to be moved to the books then. Definitely a good choice.

I can't believe Kashmir didn't occur to me sooner. This would be awesome!

"Exit light..."

When I was in high school, I had a teacher who would play London Philharmonic's Led Zeppelin album during every test. I had this same teacher for three years in a row, so the first 50 minutes of that album are permanently engrained in my memory. If you think trying to answer to last 10 questions of a test with 3 minutes left is intense, try doing it with the most dramatic part of 'When The Levee Breaks' serving as a soundtrack. Every test was epic.

But yeah, Kashmir was always my favorite.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

That is epic, and you'll never forget it. That teacher was onto something.

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

Awesome. My orchestra director for the last two years of high school was really into classic rock. My junior year, we did "Purple Haze" and really surprised some people (it was a big departure from what our school's music scene had always been). My senior year, I wanted to arrange something myself, and started with "Kashmir," but I was concerned that some of the syncopation might be hard to pull off correctly, so I ended up doing "Stairway to Heaven," instead. That turned out awesome, but I still have dreams of playing in a full orchestra doing "Kashmir."

"Exit light..."

The community orchestra I'm in is doing a concert in June that is half British classical and half British classic rock. We are opening the second half with Eleanor Rigby into Kashmir. I am playing drums in the "rock band" that will be supported by a 90 piece orchestra. I have to channel my inner Bonzo.

My favorite song we played was always Zoot Suit Riot. That's nearly a compromise, '97 isn't THAT old.

I think there should be a solid mixture of the two. I'm 23 and I much prefer the older stuff to the new, generally. But I see the need for some more current material. I just don't think it should be overdone one way or the other. I'd love it if they played a little more Chicago. Or this:

I love when marching bands play "Neck". Here's LSU's band playing it and their student section doing what they do.

Pretty awesome. Would love to see the MVs play this and the whole stadium get into it.

"You know when the Hokies say 'We are Virginia Tech' they're going to mean it."- Lee Corso

That's actually in the book. Not sure if the MVs play that for football now but I know it's been in the pep band's book for several years now. Came over when we got an assistant director from LSU. We tried to get the student section into it with us but it's not cool to participate with the band I suppose.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Yeah that used to be played at least once at every basketball game I attended when I was at Tech.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

We play Neck about twice a game. I hate that song so bad.

Heart of a Champion by Nelly

Meh... I like our way of handling kickoffs. Just wish more people actually understood the chant that goes along with the drumbeat.

Specifically, it goes like this "Number ___ is gonna die... Number ____ is gonna die" and then it gets quicker, just chant "DIE, DIE, DIE, DIE, DIE"... *ball kicked off*

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

My freshman year we were chanting that at a Furman guy and he started waving his hand toward the band like he was saying keep it coming. My memory gets fuzzy as to exactly what happened, but he screwed something up to where we knew we got in his head

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

I don't want it used for our kickoffs either, just to pump up the crowd here and there. I didn't know we had a chant to our kick off though either. Not sure I am in love with it though.

Good luck (seriously). We tried adding to the book the entire time I was in drum line from 00-05. As for one of many timely suggestions (cut down to incorporate maybe one verse, then straight to 1:32):

The entire Drumline soundtrack or just add This

Hit'em with a little Flight of the Bumblebee

dmx would be great...ruff riders anthem on a 3rd down stop and party up in here for a big play

I'll tell you what I don't ever want added to the book is Seven Nation Army (not because I hate the song, but because every team in the B1G plus the Ravens plus all of Europe plays it).

Be original and don't ever play it. Ever. Thank you.

Sincerely,

PhillyHokie

No Seven Nation Army or Zombie Nation.

Anything Queen thanks bye

I like this suggestion, if only because my immediate thought is how awesome it would be if the MVs played all of Bohemian Rhapsody during an extended (TV) timeout, with the crowd singing along and jamming out. This is now a fantasy of mine...someone make this happen.

The only problem is that the song is longer than some actual football games.

WAIT NO. THIS. MORTAL KOMBAT.

I was skeptical at first with all of the electronic sounds but I stumbled upon this and now I'm a believer. Make it happen MVs!

Going on an earlier Led Zeppelin theme...we did that show back when I was in the MV's and I loved playing Immigrant Song. Figured it'd be a great one to add to big third downs and what not.

And has been said numerous times, as a former MV, I hated when we didn't play anything current. I think the most recent song prior to FOB and the additions this past year were Twilight Zone from the Mid-90's. Either add some current stuff or popular 80's songs like below:

Take on Me

Africa

Whit keeps talking about creating a memorable experience. As a former band geek, I felt we could've done a better job keeping people engaged during TV timeouts with songs that entertain fans more. I always take pride in the fact we're one of the few stadiums that doesn't pump in music. New stuff will definitely help.

It's a Miracle in Blacksburg...TYROD DID IT MIKEY!!! TYROD DID IT!!!

I think 99% of Zeppelin is solid pump up music. At lest one song from every album would get me ready to run through a wall and could be done by a band.

I'm fairly sure I've heard the MV's play 'Take on Me.' Maybe at a basketball game?

I've always wanted to hear a marching band arrangement of "Superman" by Goldfinger.

I'm here for the memes, I just stay for the football.

Yes! This would be great by a marching band.

I'm not suggesting this for Lane, but the LSU student section singing "Neck" is pretty much the epitome of a college student section. Youtube is blocked at work or I would post a video

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

This song would be awesome to get the entire crowd into it:

Hell to the yes...

Would be much better if they played it at football since apparently no one at basketball games has ever heard it.

Move that Doh by Future. It would be cool to hear that while the offense is moving down the field. Don't know how hard it would be to turn that into something the band could do.

I'm sure I'll catch some grief, but I always thought it would be fantastic to play "Welcome Home" by Radical Face(although the Coheed & Cambria opening riff is pretty groovy). Might be more of a PA request though. I imagine the effect of all of Lane Stadium chanting the main chorus(roughly 1:05) would be pretty amazing.

The Coheed version is JMU's entrance song -- they do it pretty badass.

Do you have Paul Simon in the books?

I know Weaver didn't prefer to mic the band a while back. Has things changed since then? I think it would it give the stadium a little more energy if they were more amplified

I think they actually used to play it in the late 90s/early 2000s

Little late to the party, but heard this song awhile back and couldn't help but think how awesome it'd sound MV-style.

Back when I was a student, they played James Brown's "I Feel Good" during some timeouts.

With as many horns as the MVs have, I wouldn't mind some James Brown again... but not that song. That's my least favorite of his.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?
