Where to even begin. We have Godzilla that was recently released, and is apparently dominating the Box Office as we speak. Then you have the whole Avengers franchise that is rocketing through the movies, with their counterparts, X-Men taking off as well. And of course, there's the rebooted Star Trek franchise while Star Wars 7 through 9 are in development with the original cast. And then there are movies such as Batman vs Superman coming out later this year that are already overwhelmed with hype. And of course, there's Interstellar, the movie that Christopher Nolan abandoned the Dark Knight franchise for.
So, my fellow Hokies, what are you looking forward to at the Box Office?

Godzilla looks pretty awesome - has anyone seen it? I'm curious to hear if it was any good. I'm hoping it doesn't go in the direction of Transformers, Cloverfield, etc. by going overboard with disorienting special effects. I don't expect any sort of brilliant plot, but I like a good action movie. I have enjoyed the X-Men series, so that's on my list of movies to see.
I haven't seen it, but the reviews I've read are mixed. Some say its great, others say its far too dialogue heavy for an action flick

Saw it yesterday. It had some solid imagery and interesting special effects. I definitely enjoyed watching it, but I won't be rushing out to see it more times in theaters.
It definitely beat a different trail from the 1998 Godzilla movie. Fun fact: from an article I had read on Japanese monster movies in general down through the years, they traditionally view Godzilla as more a force of nature to be reckoned with than an evil monster that must inherently be destroyed. To that end, this Godzilla movie certainly deals with that theme.

I have no idea what you look for in movies, but I thought Godzilla kicked ass. Admittedly I'm easily entertained...
I have a pretty low bar for being entertained, as well. I'm just hoping it's not severely overblown, especially in terms of the "let's use special effects simply for the sake of using special effects." That's a bit vague, but I prefer to see technology used well.
I reccomend seeing it, there are certainly a few plot holes but, eh screw it. I came to watch giant monsters destroying cities and shit and I got exactly what I wanted

I really liked Godzilla. It relied too heavily on coincidences but it was better than a majority of action movies in the past 5 years. Definitely beats the Transformers series and the last Godzilla. I rate 7/10

So I saw Godzilla last night.
Pretty much all I have to say about the film is that it was the movie that the 1998 remake should have been. They stayed pretty true to the original concept of Godzilla, and I'm already looking forward to the sequel.
I'm pretty mixed on how I feel about the new Godzilla movie. Some aspects of the movie were serious (which I expected/enjoyed), but then the action scenes were a little too gimmicky for the serious tone of the movie. Also, IF the directors were shooting for just an action packed blockbuster it was a little low on violence. IMO it was an odd mix of a serious tone, and gimmicky Kaiju fighting.
Guardians of the Galaxy is going to be awesome. I can't wait for that.

we saw the new Captain America, it was pretty good. I'm a little iffy on the new x-men. X-men was my favorite comic growing up and the first 3 they made went from pretty good to downright bad. I really liked First Class so I'm hoping this new one will be of the same quality.
I really wanna see Godzilla. I loved kaiju movies as a kid, Pacific Rim was a lot of fun, and if we can get a sitter while its still in the theatres that'll be awesome.
As an admitted comic book nerd, I'm a homer for pretty much all of the movies Marvel has put out. I loved Captain America: The Winter Soldier, since it really did justice to the characters from the source material. Really looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy... that movie is going to be so weird in all the best ways. New trailer for that drops later today too from my understanding.
I'm with you on the X-Men though... I'm less enthused by Fox's treatment of them & lukewarm on Sony's take on Spider-Man. There's something magical about how Marvel handled their shared universe leading up to the Avengers, especially if you're a comic fan. Marvel set the bar & Fox/Sony are trying their damnedest to match them, with mixed results.
The guerrilla marketing for the XMen movie was outstanding. I am not sure how many of you saw it, but the JFK Conspiracy/Magneto piece was absolutely brilliant. At this point, I am not sure if the movie can live up to how excited I was for all the alternative history potential.
I really enjoyed some of the marketing they did, those particular pieces were fantastic.
Really, my hesitation in putting it on my must-see list is that I'm not too crazy on some of the aesthetic choices they've made regarding the characters. Growing up, the comics & the 90s animated series were very colorful and vibrant... unfortunately, that hasn't been the case for most of the X-Men films that have been released.
I finally saw the new Captain America Friday night and enjoyed it.
Interstellar and Lucy look phenomenal.

There's nothing I'm really interested in seeing, I'm in the serial mode like Walking Dead, GOT, Hell on Wheels, Turn, etc.
Is "Turn" any good? I keep telling myself that I'm going to watch it this week, and then boom it's the next day.
It's pretty good - not the be all, end all of tv dramas but it fills the period niche quite nicely.
My only real complaint about the show is that it's very hard to hear some of the dialogue... since it's all about spies & deception, a lot of it is spoken in hushed tones. And since there's plenty of accents in the show, sometimes all of that gets muddled.

There's a few ideas that are different from what we may expect as moderns.
It's good and logical, sometimes it seems a little too soap opera but, I suppose that's to be expected.
I thought Bucky Hodges did a great job in the lead role as Godzilla...

The new Captain America movie was better than the new SpiderMan movie. I have just not been able to get into the garfield kid as Peter Parker. I think Toby fit the image better. He looked like the geek the bullies would shove around.
What if I told you Garfield actually makes a much better Peter Parker than Toby ever did...

Haha touche. A friend of mine and I always argue about this because Garfield's Peter Parker is closer to that of the Parker from the comics (being a smart ass, not nearly as reserved as Toby's) but he says that he doesn't care and pretty much argues for your point

Though I wasn't trying to compare Avengers vs. Spider-Man, more so comparing leading ladies in Spider-Man and the reboot.
The new Capt. America film was a much tighter and more focused narrative. As far as the actual plot and character development went Capt America was definitely better than the new Spider Man.
For actual entertainment/enjoyment value? I dunno, maybe it's that Spidey is my favorite comic book hero (probably actually), but the action was a lot more fun in ASM2. All the Spidey doing spidey stuff (web swinging, witty quips while beating up bad guys) was fun, his costume looked great. The film just spend (again) too much time preparing us for a sequel instead of investing in really giving us a whole stand alone story. But damn did it look good, and there was hardly a point where I felt like the pacing was slow.
New Capt. America was a good film, but honestly there wasn't enough actual comic book action for me. The villain is hardly in it, and while on the one hand feeling like a monthly story in the comic store is commendable, it does leave the film feeling kinda short on actual story.
For some reason after I saw Godzilla on Saturday I wanted to play Rampage on the ole' NES. So I did. It was awesome.
Just saw ASM2. People kept saying there was a Venom symbiote(sp) I didn't see it. I'll admit that I'm more of TM for Spider-Man. Everything I keep hearing about the "new" Go-zira is that it's "too much dialogue and not enough destruction." On that note I'm surprised nobody posted up the Godzilla skit from the Dave Chappelle show. I liked X-Men 1-2, Origins. Wolverine ok. Hugh Jackman said he wants Wolverine to join Avengers (and as we all know, eventually they all come together anyways >cough< Thanos >cough<). Btw, Superman vs. Batman comes out 2015. I will probably watch Turtles (even though I strongly disagree with their 'new' design).
The symbiote was in a post-credit scene with a couple other SM villain easter eggs. But FOX owns the rights to the X-MEN so I doubt we'll ever see Wolverine in any Avenger movie.
Hey, if they can show Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch (albeit omitting the term "mutant") then they can get Wolverine in there. It is an inevitability in the Marvel universe anyways.
Interesting enough, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are going to be in Avengers and the X-Men franchise but player by different people with different looks. They both have access to those characters as they were introduced in the X-Men but joined the Avengers.
Random side note, reading one of the above comments about X-men's guerilla marketing with the Magnito/JFK assassination theory inspired me to try to find the Chapelle show skit where he spills the government's secrets and reveals that it was one man acting alone with an actual magic bullet. But searching for 'Chapelle Show Magic Bullet' sends you straight to the Illuminati part of YouTube, so I just hung out there for a while instead. Eye-opening stuff.
Recently I've seen Captain America, Spiderman 2, neighbors, godzilla, Draft Day, The Lego Movie, and Peabody and Sherman...in my opinion this is how I would rank them:
1.Lego Movie (great movie don't let the kiddy side fool you, great humor throughout the movie)
2.Peabody and Sherman same as the lego movie
3. Godzilla (not sure how the older movies were but the special effects and everything was good...a little drawn out but still good and i would recommend seeing it in IMAX or 3D)
4.) Draft Day (I like sports movies and it was an interesting take on draft day)
5a.) Spiderman 2 Jamie Foxx made this movie pretty entertaining
5b.) Captain America 2 pretty interesting storyline (make sure to stay through the credits)
6.) Neighbors...not too good all the funny parts were in the commercials and the acting kind of sucked...an interesting storyline though
Yeah I wish I saw the lego movie. Also, you have to stay to the end of credits for ALL marvel movies.

Saw the indie flick CHEF this past memorial day weekend. Excellent movie if you want an alternative to the big blockbusters. Leguizamo and Favreau are a hilarious match. Not to mention it always helps to have stone cold foxes like Sofia Vergara and Scarlett Johansson in it.
