6-4, 242-pound Good Counsel (Olney, MD) star defensive end Darius Fullwood is set to make his college decision at the end of June. Dee, as he prefers to be called, will decide between Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Kentucky, Miami, and Georgia Tech on June 28th. He will visit Virginia Tech, Ohio State, and Kentucky again before deciding.

In part, Virginia Tech made Dee's top-5 because of the program's sustained success for so many years and the level of competition in the ACC.
Additionally, as Dee put it, "Coach Moorehead has been recruiting my tail off since sophomore year. Coach Wiles and Coach Foster have been to visit me, and I've been to visit them. I feel like I have a good relationship with everybody there."
He continued on by saying, "I just feel like it's a good opportunity. Good campus feel, and they're looking for defensive ends in my class. It's a good fit for me."
Dee and Aaron Moorehead have developed a relationship that's about more than football. "It's a real great relationship. We talk probably every week. The past few times we've been talking, it's been about the exams I have coming up. I like that about coaches; it's more than just football. They want to be a type of father figure to me. Be able to look out for me whether it's academics, athletics, or just life obstacles in general. I like that a lot about Coach Moorehead. On top of that, he's a young coach. He kind of understands everything that I'm going through, the things I've experienced, the things like that."
Former Good Counsel teammate Kendall Fuller has given Fullwood a player's perspective of the Hokies' program. "Kendall's telling me nothing but positive things about Virginia Tech. The thing he emphasizes is the development. He got good development at Good Counsel with me, but said they [Tech] took his game to the next level. Even though he was already playing at a high level back here in high school, they turned him into a freshman ACC Player of the Year. That speaks a lot of words."
His film highlights a player with a motor that doesn't quit.
"Coach has been praising me for that since I started high school football sophomore season. That's something I try to remember to do each game I play. I'm not the ultimate fastest d-end, but I'm not going to give up during a game no matter what the score is. We could be getting blown out, and I'll still be keeping that motor running. No matter where you are on the field you're still in the play."
Along with his no-quit mentality and playing style, Dee told me rushing the passer is his biggest strength on the field. Conversely, he's looking to become a better player against the run over the course of his senior season. That, and to up his speed and strength to become a better overall player.
Before June 28th rolls around, what factors will weigh most in Dee's decision?
"Good academics, good opportunity for me to get a good degree with the major that I want to major in [business], good campus life, good campus feel, somewhere I can feel like I'm at home, feel welcome, and a good relationship with the coaches. You're going to be with them for four years, so that relationship can't get any better. A plus would be to be able to play good competition, be able to win games, which a lot of these schools provide."

Well according to his full criteria in the last paragraph, I say I like our chances.
From a recruits perspective, that's pretty much every school.
...And explains why YOU!VA isn't in there.
turkey leg for "YOU!va"
Has that joke ever been made before? If not kudos sir
I don't think so, but it is clearly a good call.
If I had to guess, I think he'll end up at Ohio State or Virginia Tech. He has a very good relationship with Larry Johnson too.
Yeah, based on his final three visits I have to agree. I am not sure what Kentucky can offer that anOSU or VT can't. I think based on past history of sending people to the pro's from defense we have to be ranked above anOSU as well.
Ohio State has had better success sending defensive players to the NFL over the last 4 drafts. Tech hasn't sent anyone but DBs (#DBU, though).
2013: LB Ryan Shazier (15), CB Bradley Roby (31), FS C. B. Bryant (241)
2012: DT Johnathan Hankins (49), DE John Simon (129)
2011: CB Nate Ebner (197)
2010: DE Cameron Heyward (31), CB Chimdi Chekwa (113), S Jermale Hines (158), LB Brian Rolle (193), LB Ross Homan (200)
2013: CB Kyle Fuller (14), CB Antone Exum (182)
2012:
2011: CB Jayron Hosley (94)
2010: CB Rashad Carmichael (127)
Kentucky offers the chance to play SEC competition. Fullwood made it clear to me he wants to play good teams, good o-linemen and get better each week. That's not to say the ACC and B1G are slouches when it comes to competition level.
No one should be surprised that Ohio State sends more players to the NFL. They typically get 4-5 star recruits with tremendous athletic ability, and that tends to translate well into the NFL no matter which school they go to. I bet if those same guys went to VT, they would've been drafted higher because their athletic ability would've stood out more.
Kentucky has also been recruiting very well recently. I think they already signed some highly ranked DEs last year that will probably be on the field in a few years.
The only OSU grad's that I have heard about are Offensive not defensive, but the numbers obviously don't lie.
I wouldn't get too hung up on the 4-5 star recruits...Of the 32 first round picks in the 2013 NFL draft 26 were 3 star or below when recruited for college. I put faith in our coaches ability to get them to the next level...something Mr Fullwood recognized first hand with Kendall Fuller. Hopefully that will have some sway in his decision...it would be nice to see him in o&M.
Kendall's been talking to him. How can you NOT listen to a Fuller? O&M will look good on your Mr. Fullwood.
Looking back, you could make a case that recruiting Vince Fuller was a bigger recruiting tool (long term), than Mike Vick. These Fullers are the gift that keeps on giving.
Or Damian Russell.
Who? Cousin of the Fuller's who played at VT in the early 90's. He's the one who got Vincent here.
I did not know this.
Damian Russell, if you are on TKP, I owe you at least a rail at TOTS for getting the windfall started.
Somebody get that man a medal.
According to the fact that Coach Moorehead (McGiggity) has been #ChoppingWood, a Fuller has been talking to him & the fact that it's Tech I like our chances.
With the likely incoming loss of Ferrell we need to close on Fullwood. Very underrated player, I think we lead for him at the moment.
What happened/is happening with Ferrell? I thought he was a close to a VT lock as you could possibly get. Fullwood would definitely help soften that blow if Ferrell does commit to Clemson.
The Clemson 247Sports website are predicting him to commit to Clemson.
I heard that. I was trying to figure out how we dropped the ball on him.
Unsure about that. Mark has been trying to get an interview with him for the past few weeks to talk about his recruitment, but he never returned his calls. Mark interviewed his coach a couple of months ago for the story, but couldn't talk to Clelin.
We're losing Ferrell? Wow.
What I'm seeing the last few years is that you better be good out of state because every kid feels like they can go to any school. You don't need to have a kid be in your state anymore to know about him, that's a big change in the last decade. Kids don't feel like they will never see their parents anymore if they are more than 4 hours away (thanks facetime!). Everyone is on TV these days.
So if we miss on a kid like Ferrell, it's not a big deal to lose an "in-state" kid if we can land an "out-of-state" kid to replace him. Geography is less and less important every year.
His mom wanted him to stay within 3-4 hours of home originally, but had a change of heart apparently. In fact I don't think we even made his top 4, it seems as if his family didn't care about distance anymore he wanted to go OOS. I wish him the best of luck however, he's a really good kid.
I like this kids' priorities. Hope he becomes a Hokie.
VT is in serious need of solid DE. Fullwood should join Kendall Fuller and the hokie family to chop more woods. GO HOKIES!
It sounds like he's going about this process the right way. I like what he said in that last paragraph - encouraging sign for the Hokie faithful. Let's see you in Maroon & Orange, Dee!
Moorehead is the lead recruiter on Fullwood....
I mean, sometimes the jokes just write themselves.
