First off, this isn't an ad. The Hokies Photo Store is selling personalized photos of whatever text you want of the MV's on the field at Lane Stadium. I decided to have some fun with it. Here's the link. Have fun :) And here's some that I've done.

EDIT: Crap. Didn't even look at the title. (It was Lane Staidum)

A hilarious typo in:

The comments in that thread were pretty epic. It's been a running joke ever since.
Just went back and read that again. Legen. Dary.
Do we have enough MV's for this? Haha.
@Danny Coale- the band members in the image remind me of the route he ran vs Nebraska
I did it!

is that the way to the promise land????
That's what I tell the ladies anyways. ;.)
So... this is the aerosmith show from a few years ago?
HA. Well done.
I got a good chuckle out of just about all of these, but now there's spit on my computer screen. Thanks for the reminder that I'm not the only on here who's about 11 years old on the inside.
Shots fired!
Game. Blouses.
Yea, BLUE BLOUSES!
Can I get something spelled out in the piles of trophy's we have instead?
Here's what it would look like if it was the HT's
Close, but that block is too big.
I have to say, as someone without a dog in this fight, I find these MV vs. HT posts highly entertaining. Can you guys explain to me the main differences between the two, since I know so little about either other than the fact that they are bands? And yes, feel free to include cheapshots, digs, and generally good-natured ribbing. I assume that the Marching Virginians do in fact march. Do the HT's stay stationary?
Well the most obvious would be that the HT's are the band of the Corps of Cadets. We live together, do none band corps events as a unit, and are not just a band but a full company in the corps for administrative purposes which means we live together in the same hall for 4 years. You can also ONLY join the HT's as an incoming freshmen.
As far as marching style, besides us only really playing marches, we march military style. What that means is that individual cadets are always facing the direction they are moving. So while the MV's might back up or slide during drill we would turn around or face the side. That does limit sound projection unfortunately but it is how we roll.
Anything specific you want to know? We are also the 2nd oldest student organization on campus second only to the GERMAN club!
Please fill in the blanks appropriately (one should be HT, the other MV)....
_____:Pie::_______:Cake
The MVs should be strictly against Cake since the JMU incident. All cake tastes like sad cake. Sad, rainsoaked cake.
Unfortunately, I think the HT's would have to be cake. We're rectangular in formations most of the time, we're nothing super flashy, we tend not to have fruits (though it happens occasionally), and we don't have a lot of variety, so that even when it's really good, it's still just cake/ the HTs. All that being said, I personally am staunchly #TeamPie.
I second that request in the name of Ryan MF Williams and all those who (used to be able to) salute the HTs and MVs when they scored a TD in their respective end zones.
Kyle Fuller did after the Marshall blocked kick!
Made up for his getting torched by FSU for a TD back in 2012 and letting them go ahead:(
My freshman year (2008 season), Killa Kam Chancellor came up and conducted the band after we won the Orange Bowl. And Danny Coale did the same after the Chikfila Bowl vs. Tennessee the year after.
Dude thank you for making me remember that! I had completely forgotten. Enjoy your delicious turkey leg
Dustin Pickle would salute the Corps after every kick-off towards the South End Zone. It was always extra special when he did it after making the tackle.
the HTs formations, while smaller (due to size difference) and simpler (due to style difference) actually end up looking clean and like what they're supposed to. From a friend in the MVs "one of the reasons dave likes so many curves in our formations is that it's harder to tell when someone is off." This after I commented on how wavy the VT was after one game. You can only blame so much on drunk tubas...
Ehh... the HTs never looked necessarily perfectly clean in their lines/formations when I saw them from the stands. And the problem with high stepping all the time is that when one person is off, they are REALLY off.
We were pretty damn good this year. Unfortunately, there's gonna be massive drop off now that Vaughn and I are gone. And we only have like 2 trombones returning, so the front rank is gonna be all sorts of ugly.
The MVs do sometimes march (we're using that term VERY loosely), but generally they form distinctive shapes and just kinda stay there for a while. This makes it much easier to hear them (and having 330 people doesn't exactly hurt). We're almost constantly moving, and only march 121 people. They also practice every day, we only go 3 times a week, though Friday nights tend to end between 10 and midnight. Both bands play mostly outdated music in the stands, though you probably only hear it from the MVs, though you may sometimes have heard one HT trumpet player (who shall remain nameless). The MVs get to go to bowl games (and get paid quite well for it), the HTs get to do high profile parades (which we get paid almost enough to buy some air with). The MVs also tend to get away with having more fun than us, because something something professionalism, something something conduct unbecoming a cadet.
You say "only 121" HT's like it's small. Well, back in the Old Corps...
Seriously, ask any pre-2010 HT what it was like marching in a double-digit block. Some years in the 70 & 80's the number was barely over 50.
Beginning of last year, we wanted to use those high numbers to make it so we had the best quality on the field, basically by cutting down to 81, 90, or 99 for the first show or two so that people who needed it could get enough practice time before actually performing.Unfortunately, MAJ Mac has tunnel vision about putting as many on the field as possible, often without considering the impact that has on the quality of performance, and so we had to march at least 110 all year. It's difficult to up the quality of the product on the field when pretty much everyone in the band knows they get to march every Saturday regardless of how much effort they put in during practice.
Somebody draw it...
ya sorry Horse...I don't think this is the best representation of you
