Hokies hire new Assistant QB coach - Quinn Schafer

Not really able to find much on the guy. This appears to be his first ever coaching job from what I can see, but he's very young. Played QB at Valpo til he graduated in 2013, but saw very little playing time. (Career stats: 17 completions over 45 attempts for 224 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs)

If you want to follow him on twitter, you can find him at @coachschafer11

Hmm I'm sure Andy will give us a quick write up soon.

This makes sense. Loeffler shouldn't have to spend too much time coaching the qbs. Having an assistant to make sure the fundamentals are getting done will allow him to spot coach as needed.

That said... Have we ever had an assistant qb coach? Not that I recall.

Go team Whit!

Were we not at the cap for the number of coaches we could have?

I thought we were too, maybe he's a grad assistant.

I believe these count as Player Development Coaches which doesn't have the same cap. This is where we were lacking in comparison to many ACC schools and other schools nationally.

I would have read it, but if you make me watch a video to read an article, you're not the website for me. Ads going along side, I don't mind, but that's ridiculous.

Like Hulu last night...a video had a hard time playing, but every time it reloaded, I was subjected to a 30 second commercial I couldn't skip...for a 2 minute clip.

Yup. Once I got a full page ad and then when I started reading it popped up that unskippable 30 second video. Later, examiner, I don't need you.

I trust the coaching staff. They must see something in Quinn Schafer to bring him on. Welcome our newest Hokie!

We're at the NCAA limit for coaches, so I am guessing this is a grad assistant job focused on QBs. I'm not sure the rules would allow his title to officially be "Assistant QB Coach", though regardless of title his role will probably be exactly that.

Bitter is all over it.

Cool, I lived in Valparaiso growing up, the university was less than 5 minutes from my house.
Hopefully we can spend more time choppin' wood and develop our QBs better.

Hopefully he learned a lot about coaching by being on the sidelines at Valpo.

The Dude Abides

No doubt he did. Plenty of successful coaches never/barely played big-time football, but were at least around the game enough to pick up the fundamentals and get into the sport. Look at Dabo Swinnney. He spent just about all of his career at Alabama on the sidelines but he's turned out alright as a coach.

Isn't that true for Chip Kelly as well? Some people are very good at surrounding themselves with the best people, putting them in positions to succeed, laying out a vision, and delegating the details. They usually tend to be good coaches, despite their lack of first hand experience.

Well Dabo is a hell of a recruiter...not sure about being a good coach though. Your point is still valid. I believe Bellichick never played but I may have the wrong coach (it might have been Charlie Weis)

Yeah, I know for sure Weis is a good example. And Dabo might not be the greatest X's and O's guy, but he knows how to build and run a successful program (taking notes, London?).
