Summer Camps and Unofficial Visits

This is a worthwhile story on the unofficial recruitment of younger players and the business of unofficial visits. Jeremy Fowler of CBS Sports did a great job uncovering all of this and speaking to coaches. It's clear that some are more in favor than others, which is what makes it a big gray area, like Fowler talks about.
One note, Coach Beamer and staff don't hire outside coaches to run/coach at their camps. You'll have to decide if that's good or bad. I for one think that it is for the better: why bring 500 kids to campus for your camp when you know you won't be able to see them all perform?
Anyway, here's the link to the story. Probably an issue that will continue to gain attention from the media and, down the line, from the NCAA.

Good article, thanks brooks. Shady stuff. Those coaches don't sound like they're making too much bank on it, though. I still see the potential for abuse, but they aren't making Willie Lyles money.

Great decision by Virginia tech not to have guest coaches. This practice can get out of control early. College coaches should handle the recruitment and organize the summer camps themselves to avoid conflict of interest and NCAA violations .

I can see how that could slip slide into abuse in the never ending quest for an advantage.
Does LOLUVA do camps? Wonder how much guest coaches get paid.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Rumor has it that they get paid $38.0

Yeah, that's where I was headed with that.

When I was an assistant at Grassfield, we worked camps at UCONN (when they had Edsall) and Notre Dame. Both times we took numerous players, both good and bad (around 30). Both times we made about ~$80 a session, but that was a few years ago. Their coaches usually only pay attention to the top recruits and we were there to run drills for all the others. Both times there were several D-II, D-III college assistants looking for prospects. I went for the experience of learning from the college coaches and to go on short summer trips. Edsall was a jerk, but his assistants took us out for beer and pizza and talked x's / o's all night. Brian Kelly only made a few appearances at their camp, and the camp overall left alot to be desired. I was very dissapointed because the kids basically ran a few drills with the high school coaches and the Notre Dame assistants huddled together laughing/joking the whole time. They even sent me a tax form the next year for the little money we made.

"Edsall was a jerk"

I am absolutely shocked that someone would say this about Randy Edsal (sarcasm).
