I dont usually pay too much attention to Bleacher report, but when I see the name Bud Foster, I had to read it. VTs Bud Foster came in second place while Michigans State Pat Narduzzi came in first. Considering the year Michigan State just had, I think that the writer got it right. But HokieNation would argue that coach Foster should have been first.

Who are the top 5 best defensive coordinators in college Football?

Former VT DB Coach Whammy Ward comes in at #10 as well

I'm here for the memes, I just stay for the football.

One of the things that is missed in all the stats is that it's easier to have a defense high in the ranks of scoring and yard numbers is if the offense controls the ball for a long time and number of plays.

If your offense keeps the ball, the opposing offense has less plays to score, making the defense look good.

Our D has not had that advantage for a couple years. If our offense gets better over the next coupla years, our D will get better, applying the adage, a good offense is the best defense. But when your defense is already a lights out unit, like ours, the sky is the limit.

There was a post in a long previous thread where we have the best chance at a NCG if we come out of nowhere.
That coming out of nowhere is made possible due to our D being the best in the business.
All that "coming out of nowhere" needs, is the last part of the puzzle and off we go, to the races.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Great Points! Like your positive attitude.
The improvement of the D numbers by an improvement in Offense resulting in better field position and less D time on the field just makes sense. That just makes me think how out of sight our D would have been for many, many, many years with a better offense.
If Loeffler can get the O going we can really make a move back into prominence. Its gonna be work, a lot of it.

And I think we've seen the fruits of that first bit of work. They're still green and leave a bad tast in your mouth, but soon we will be cramming the most delicious papayas around into our mouths.

If you play it, they will win.

No need to make anything; you can find most of these kinds of things just by using Google Images.

Got it, thanks. Didn't mean to step on you, but I saw your post right after I edited mine.

All good. Go forth and share hilarious images!

Hokie D looked very good in the spring game. It will better when everyone is healthy.

I think it's worth pointing out that Bud's defenses have consistently been great, even without outstanding, NFL talent anywhere but the secondary. If I remember correctly, Narduzzi has been at MSU for a while, but this was his first truly great defense, and included NFL-quality players all over the field. If he can do it next year and the year after, I may give him the nod, but Foster still reigns supreme in my book just due to consistency.

I don't think there has been any doubt that they are both top 5 coaches.

Bud does go out there and coach his freakin nu*s off - so I agree with you.

2nd? Nonsense.

Rating Bud #2 is like a punch in the gut...

Or.....

To anyone who would rate Bud Foster as the 2nd best DC and not the 1st... snap out of it!

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Narduzzi did it for one year. Do it for a decade and then come back and challenge Bud. Longevity is the key to Bud being #1 in my book. The man produces so frequently that everyone just assumes (and rightly so) that the defense will be fine. That is something that people take for granted.

Agree completely.
Consistently good over occasionally great.

Bud Foster DC for life. Unless the HC is vacated by Beamer.
