The number one rated player in the state of Virginia, Josh Sweat, is planning on enrolling early to college: http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/eye-on-college-football/2459375...
He is a player that could definitely help Virginia Techs defense in the future.
The fact that Virginia Tech doesnt have to wait until signing day to find out where Josh Sweat is going to school, does it mean the Hokies have a better chance of landing this five star defensive end in this recruiting class?

I don't think this helps or hurts us. He's a top recruit in the nation so every program will make room for him. In the past we've lost out on guys (Taylor, Harrison, etc) that didn't think they had a spot with their first choice only for that to appear after their first choice lost out on other recruits.
Yes we have a good chance. I think we will really know where we stand after he visits FSU and tOSU next month as he already visited UGA and UT last week.
There is no way to know for sure. The hokies have a history of giving early playing time to highly rated recruits like Kendall Fuller, Jonathan, Brandon... Sweat seems like hes carefully going through his college recruitment with his parents. Lets hope its a good sign for the hokies. They could use him .
Do I think it would be a good decision for Sweat to come to VT? Yes. He would have a chance at early playing time and could be a force at the end position (gap fit system aside, our D pressures the QB and creates opportunities for big plays).
Do I think Sweat will choose VT? Unfortunately, we've had trouble signing prominent d-line recruits recently and the same factors might come into play again.
Need to put on the full court press. Everything needs to be done to get this kid.
It'll probably come down to us and UGA. Right now, the Hokies are the only school he knows he's going to visit and he's said repeatedly they'll be in it til the end. I think Tech is doing everything possible and sitting as well as humanly possible right now. Hopefully, we'll get him on campus again in July and knock the official out of the park when he comes.
During his official, if he asks if he should worry that Frank leaves after 2016 right then and there Whit should walk right in and put a contract extension right on Frank's desk and he should look Josh in the eye and say, "Well it appears that you shouldn't worry about that anymore." He could commit on the spot, haha.
I know you are joking, but the kid isn't THAT important that we need to jump to contract conclusions.
EDIT: If I offended someone, I apologize. I suppose.
Agreed, but it wouldn't surprise me if Whit extends Frank's contract sometime after the season (assuming we don't fall apart this year) if opposing coaches continue to recruit against us using Frank leaving after 2016.
It needs to be done anyways. The kid's important enough to fiddle with the timing just a bit.
I'm not wholly sure that he is ISN'T that important. Getting him (or not getting him) has enormous implications.
We got Macho Harris once upon a time - it can be done. I think our program and fanbase is at a tangible turning point right now. Recruits like Cornell Brown, Michael Vick...the guy is up there impact-wise and perception-wise as one of the top recruits we have ever gone after, IMO.
As a top recruit from the state of VA, I would say Sweat is very important. But he will only be in college for 4-5 years so VT should think beyond that when talking about new coach or contract extensions.
I don't think anyone on these forums would argue Whit is not savvy. If Frank's age and lack of a contract extension is the reason for this disappointing* recruiting class, what does that tell us? Whit seems to act fast, so is Whit planning a move sooner than we expect?
*Yes, it's early. Still, VT is not finishing in the top 30 of any publications recruiting rankings at the end of the year. I'll take top 40 at this point.
It most likely would tell us that Whit does not believe Frank's age is not the reason why fans are so upset about a poor recruiting class.
But why no contract extension?
I really do wish we could get him. But last year I really got my hopes up for Hand and they came crashing down. This year, I'm just going to let Mr Sweat make his own decision and see how it goes. Getting worked up on recruits isn't going to help the cause folks. I suggest everyone to take a deep breath and let our more than capable coaches do their jobs.
I know you're right, but every year it happens. Im still upset about D. Nnadi picking FSU over us. I can name a huge let down I've had with VT recruiting every year since I became a VT fan.
