Top 10 of Felton Davis III

Davis is a receiver out of Highland Springs in Richmond. He's a big target for the Hokies, and has them at/near the top of his list. Having talked with his coach earlier this year, I'd be fairly surprised if he didn't end up in maroon and orange, but his recruitment has really taken off lately and the Tech coaching staff could be in for a bit of a battle here.

For those who don't know Highland Springs' coach was a DB for DBU. Same high school as Macho Harris, Cris Hill, the Hopkins brothers and Jerome Wright. I like our chances.

Yes he is. He said if he's got a guy who can play in college, he's sending him to Tech.

That's awesome. Man, I love Hokies!

YEAH, I LOVE HOKIES!
Yea

Top 10 seems a little much.... dont see the point of even really posting until you are down to 3 or 5.

While I definitely agree, it's interesting to see what our competition will be. Every one of those schools has offered him, and he's supposedly planning on taking some/all of his officials.

Agree. I am always curious to see who we're up against.

VT needs a Big Body WR, get this guy in the weight room and he could be an amazing deep threat.

Pour some Beer on it

I agree. I caught one of his games last Fall and he completely dominated. Really excited about this kid.

No particular order

I think he's messing with everyone's head. I checked twice, and I'm pretty sure it's in alphabetical order.

Lolz. Yes it is. He mentioned it was in alphabetical order when he told 247.

I question whether that symbol is an accurate depiction of a badgers footprint.

Maybe not a badger , but we are shown as a d$$n chicken.

Felton would be a good student/athlete for Coach Moorehead to mold.

Felton demonstrates a dramatic change in recruiting in the Commonwealth. This kid is a fringe top-20 in state, the kinda kid who used to have 3 or 4 BCS teams offer him, two of which are in-state. Now, he's got Nebraska and Michigan State recruiting him. Miami offers everyone in Virginia, it seems. Mizzou? Wisky? WTH are these teams doing in Virginia?

Maybe it is a recent in flux of talent in the state that we now have 30+ kids with big boy offers and it used to be only 20+. There are kids now ranked 20th who have offers like the top 10 used to. Maybe the talent is better.

But a more likely culprit would be:

1. Every other school in the country now figures out those 3* kids we built our program off of are bigtime recruits, so more offers, more of those 3* kids have become fringe 4* kids, and
2. With more mobility, both real (for camps) and internet (more games on TV, more contacts with coaches, more database sharing), both the schools and kids are less tied to geography than ever before.

I noticed the same thing with the kid from Roanoke who just picked UT. This is a kid who used to have VT, uva and Wake Forest offers. Now, he's got ND, Tennessee and South Carolina offers.

I'm with you on this train of thought - something is up. Maybe this is just schools turning the tables on the recruits who commit to an offer to "hold a spot". Maybe schools have just decided to offer everyone with these "non committable offers" and sort it out later.
This whole thing could devolve into a chaotic, compressed game of musical chairs at the end of January.

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

And/or every school (incl. VT) -- because recruiting budgets have grown considerably in the last 2-3 years because of big increases in TV revenue -- are now doing what they always wanted to do but couldn't because of limited resources...which is expand their recruiting reach. Then add in the ability to see video on virtually every kid instantly (vs a kid having to send video to a school) and kids' willingness to go away from home (a consequence of every game on TV & wider social media IMO) and you've got schools -- particularly those in talent poor states like Michigan -- increasing their focus on the next tier of states beyond Florida, Texas, & California (or in the case of Mich & Michigan St, beyond Ohio).

Schools (incl VT) have figured out that the key is to get players that fill positions of need and that fit their system somewhat regardless of geography. Winning the "battle" for in-state kids is almost meaningless now.

I also think that this is a product of people gaming the system a little bit - as we found out recently, some offers are committable and some are not.

Not saying that those teams don't have a legit interest, but I do wonder sometimes how inflated a prospect's list is considering that not every team (especially some of the big names) would be able to give a scholarship to everybody they offer.

I have a good friend who's the assistant recruiting coordinator at Southern Miss, and he's given me a little insight into their process (which is probably pretty similar for how most schools do it). Essentially, the coaching staff as a whole has a good idea of what they're looking for at each position. A kid's tape will come in and a few of them will sit down and say either, "yep, that's an offer," or "nah, I don't this kid quite has what we want" or "let's get this kid in camp and see how he does in person" or something to that effect. Davis III is a kid where most schools will sit down, look at him, and say, "yep, that's an offer." What that essentially means is that he's a kid who the coaches believe has the talent and potential to be a legitimate contributor to the team. In many cases, the coaching staff will extend offers to as many kids as possible who they think are "offers" and usually there isn't much separating them (I mean, is there really a huge difference on tape between the #15 and the #17 WR in the country? I don't think so), so more often than not, it's first-come-first-serve on who takes the offer until spots for that position fill up. This usually isn't an issue because, as we've seen, not every prospect (or even half, depending on how wide of a net is cast) will accept. The problems come when a school is waiting on an elite prospect (say, the difference between Trevon Hill and Josh Sweat), when they only have one or two spots left. That's where the whole "noncomittable offer" thing becomes problematic and why the Tech staff tends to hold off on pulling the trigger until they're sure they'd be happy with the kid if he accepted the scholarship offer, as they don't want to get a reputation for running kids through a bunch of hoops.

Yeah if you look at the lower 3*'s in the state you'll find that Wisconsin has offered a lot of the guys Tech hasn't even offered. I find that strange. I guess Wisconsin doesn't have a lot of recruits in their area and has to look far to get players.

Well, UVa can't get really get much worse, can they? So it is somewhat true.

The Come Up. It's that the feeling you get when drinking Zima at the tailgate.
The Come Down. It's that feeling you get at the end of the 1st quarter of a LOLUVA game.

I would think that "The Come Up" could be what happens after the first quarter.....maybe what you ate at the tailgate.

Maybe IE just isn't showing the proper emoji to me, but what is he saying to rep? The stripes? The plaid? The argyle?

EDIT: Just viewed the tweet and saw it was the colors Blue and Orange. The embedded tweet I'm seeing just shows two squares that are striped black and white.

UVA is laughably terrible

At the game last year a guy told me he had a poem to represent his love for UVA haha

Ok just drop Vandy from the list. He couldn't even figure out an emoji to use.

He could have used this one:

Why would he use UVA's?

It would make more sense to leave UVA blank/empty to represent typical stadium attendance.

How about we start calling them the crickets?

You know the sound of their stadium on game day (or spring game). The Jiminys. The retort from "38-0, bro". You know...stuff like that.
