Miami LBs Alex Figueroa & Jawand Blue arrested on sexual battery charges (updated)

Many of you remember that Jawand Blue switched his commitment from Virginia Tech to Miami on Signing Day. At the time, a reporter live tweeted the conversation between Charley Wiles and Blue (though the reporter originally attributed the VT coach as Frank Beamer).

Edit: Both have been permanently dismissed from the team by Miami AD Blake James

I see what you did there. However we all know the truth is that this wouldn't blow the mind of anyone who had the U figured out.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

So wait... they get this minor liquored up, slip her a roofie, take her back to their place, have their way with her, and then, on their own, go to the Coral Gables Police Dept to give a full confession to the cops?

That article was updated a few minutes ago. The earlier version said that they were arrested, brought to the police station and then admitted to everything. Either way, they are dumb and hopefully will be sitting in jail for the next few years.

Boy, Thug []_[] really Blue it by flipping him from us on signing day.

The U keeps taking good talents and destroy them.

On a football note, just googled their depth chart and Figueroa was projected to start, and Blue was second string. This is definitely a big blow to their LB unit.

This just in:

Were they even projected starters? Two deep?

Figueroa was a projected starter. Blue was projected second string.

I don't know why some of these kids put their playing careers or even life in jeopardy by doing this crap. Yea yea yea, they're young, I get it, but so were all of us here, and me personally, I would never ever think about doing this to anybody. I played high school ball for 4 years, unfortunately never had the chance to play college ball, but even if I had the chance, I would take advantage of it every minute with all that comes with it and never jeopardize it. I know we all make mistakes some time in our lives, but thats just me...

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

What position did you play? TE?

Allen Ox

Yes. Went in wanting to play QB, 6'4" 220 lbs, we all know how this story goes..... haha.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

Bucky can relateto that. Except he cant stop growing

Im content with my ass sitting on the couch and drinking lots of beers, while watching him catch TD's in the back of the endzone.

Part of the reason is that as 'elite' athletes in HS, and later in college, they have a sense of entitlement that causes them to think the rules don't apply to them. At some schools, at some times, they are right - the rules that apply to 'normal people' do not apply to them. They are enabled, because of their physical gifts. Not all of them understand the difference.

*coughcough UNC cough*

Did I offend anyone with this comment to receive a downvote? Maybe an anonymous Miami fan? I'm confused...

Anyways, The U is back.... in jail?

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I'm going to guess that its accidental downvote that went unnoticed (i like to give peeps the benefit of the doubt)

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

thats what I think too, but to be honest, it didn't really bother me that much

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

In all seriousness, I hope the victim can recover from these terrible events. It's great that she was able to quickly report the incident to the police though and hopefully get some type of justice. It also sounds like the accused admitted guilt already, so it will be interesting to see what ramifications come to them from a legal and athletic standpoint.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

This x a million.

The details are really chilling:

Figueroa and Blue, without the 17-year old girls knowledge, gave her a narcotic, anesthetic, or other intoxicating substance that mentally or physically incapacitated on July 5th.

Figueroa and Blue, police say, then sexually battered the victim who was physically helpless to resist.

Very well said. I usually take a very measured approach in these types of things, believing very strongly in innocence until proven guilty, but in the case that they admitted to everything...

I hope justice is served; it's just horrible what has happened to the victim.

Taking a different tack, I'll give credit to the Miami AD for doing the right thing and not hiding behind semantics or legalese and allowing the players to remain on the team for as long as possible. Here's hoping the victim is able to reconstruct her life as much as possible. Here's even hoping the two players learn from their stupidity and move on in life successfully. Ugly stuff...

While I don't condone what these guys did. I will give them (little) credit for admitting guilt. Too many athletes, celebrities and people in general forget to TELL THE TRUTH EARLY.

I'd like to think Blue wouldn't be in jail right now if he had stayed with the Hokies. I doubt he would have had the negative influences here in Blacksburg that he had in Miami.

Onward and upward

that's a little naive.

Agree. Example A: Vick brothers. Example B: Cody Journell. Example C: Michael Holmes.
Think it always comes down to individuals more than the environment.

A stable environment can help to a degree, but I definitely agree that it mainly boils down to how they were raised and their individual morals.

What did Michael Vick do while at Virginia Tech??? Obviously he's been in a lot of trouble since that time, but I don't remember him embarrassing us while in school. I

“These people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

I agree. Our football players have done terrible things too. Given what Figueroa and Blue did to the victim, I don't think this is a point and laugh situation, nor are we (or are fans of any major program) in any position to throw stones.

ahem... Anyone remember the Tony Morrison situation...?

Having gotten my degree in PoliSci-Legal Studies, that case was beaten to death in three different classes. Silver lining: at least it got certain provisions of the Violence Against Women Act struck down.

My favorite thing on glass houses:

There's a saying that goes "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones." Okay. How about "Nobody should throw stones." That's crappy behavior. My policy is: "No stone throwing regardless of housing situation." Don't do it. There is one exception though. If you're trapped in a glass house, and you have a stone, then throw it. What are you, an idiot? So maybe it's "Only people in glass houses should throw stones, provided they are trapped in the house with a stone." It's a little longer, but yeah.

Looks like I was late to the party here, but here's video of that joke, starting at 2:45

I realize we don't have a clean slate. I'm not trying to say that if he had come here he definitely wouldn't have gotten into trouble. I'm just saying that I'd like to think this in particular wouldn't have happened. I'm not trying to dis Miami by saying they have more negative influences.. let's be honest here...It's Miami. Blacksburg isn't even close to the type of city that Miami is. Blacksburg doesn't have the population or the access to clubs and parties like Miami. There really is NO WAY to tell definitively what would have happened though. It's impossible to know. That doesn't stop me from hoping that the leadership and types of people playing for Tech would be a deterrent for this type of behavior.

All that being said, I think Miami, the university, is handling it really well. Kudos to them for dismissing both players permanently.

Onward and upward

I wouldn't call it naive, I would simply call it unknown and undefined. Who knows what really happened. Maybe Figuera was the one that instigated it and Blue was drunk enough himself not to say no. Maybe if Blue would have chosen VT, he would have become great friends with guys like Exum and Fuller, who would have an extreme positive influence and he would never found himself in this predicament.

We'll just never know.

All things considered, I'm glad we'll never have to find out.

Didn't realize Alex Figueroa is from Stafford, too.

Glad these jokers are going to be locked up for a long time. Too bad they had to ruin a girl's life in the meantime.

From the same HS as JR Collins and EL Smiling; could've easily been a Hokie, as well. Been told that the admin at the HS coddled him. This starts at home, but certainly isn't being curbed in HS.

@CraigThompsonVT

Yep...see Drew Harris, et al.

Drew Harris?

As a father of 2 girls, I'd lose my mind if anyone did something like this to my children. Miami, FSU, shoot, VT for that matter, there is no excuse. A young woman will be forever damaged, her emotions will be a jumbled mess. Taking innocence from children and purity from a young woman are two of the darkest sins in this world. I understand that I'm not privy to all the details, but nothing good is coming from this. Shame on those boys-but greater shame on those men in their lives that failed to teach them what it means to be a man. So much emphasis is put on laughing at Miami, I think we need to take a look at the bigger picture here-the damaging of a young girl.

If it ain't orange, it better be maroon...and if it ain't maroon, it better be soon!

Excellent post! Agree 100%

Whether or not these cats had fathers or male role models in their lives is important. But lets be real here. Even if they came from single mother families, they would not want what they did to the young lady to happen to their own Mothers. They would try to kill any man who drugged and assaulted their mom or sister, yet they did it to someone's daughter or sister.

The fact that they can't realize that beforehand is the greatest shame.

people compartmentalize. of course they dont want anything to happen to their loved ones. people do terrible things to other people every day, they just dont have the empathy to think about it like that.
