It looks like Hokiesports has updated the heights and weights of new enrollees. That obviously means it's time to read way too much into this new information!
Yes, I am also excited.
Check it out here
Notes from 1st read through:
1. Mihota is listed at DE again.
2. DJ Reid is bigger than I thought he'd be (229lbs).
3. They incorrectly list Bucky Hodges at 6'6" when we all know he is well over 8' by now.

We got some skinny LBs...
holy shit, no kidding. Derek di Nardo and Ronny Van dyke are Very Light. That's unacceptible, it is HARD to be 6'3 and only 204 lbs. hope they can put on some mucsle before we get going.
Didn't Vandyke just recover from like his 3rd or 4th shoulder injury? I think he put more of an emphasis on fully recovering from his past injuries so I think it is hard to blame him for being light ATM.
I'm not too worried about it (and for the record, I'm 6'3" and it is HARD for me to stay north of 190).
Alonzo Tweedy was listed at 193 and that dude could literally tackle anything. I'm more excited about all the hot, nasty badass speed than I am worried about the lack of size.
Damn dude. Did you run a lot?
he eats a lot of burritos, so he's... always running, so to speak

The shits that keep on running

Interestingly enough, despite my predominantly burrito diet, I am much more likely to struggle with the opposite end of the bowel-irregularity spectrum.
I did run track and cross-country in high school, but I don't run much anymore.
Nonsense, you just need something (or somebody to run from). How about your mom-in-law (too soon)?
I'm 6'3" and can't stay BELOW 250! Maybe RVD should stay at my house for the summer. Of course, he'd lose a lot of speed.
40 yr old metabolism is a bitch. Couch meet potato!
Sounds like a DT in the making! How many years of eligibility do you have left?
I think we're converting everyone to DB. That way we can tell top ranked LB prospects that they're going to be in a position to get to the NFL.
Ah, the rarely-seen 0-0-11 alignment. Darn near impossible to pass against.
Smallest but fastest group of LBs in a while.
Minor is bigger than expected.
They don't have the right tools to measure how tall Bucky is
They'll need to build an extra large hadron collider for this.
Probably not worth it, but it would be a great research tool. Re-pave the drillfield road and bury a collider underneath it, I say. Between Hodges, Rogers, and Damien Dozier, I'm sure they could tear up the road in a day or two.
Weren't there discussions that Holland Fisher was pushing in the 220 range? 193 seems like more of a DB than a linebacker weight, which I think is a good thing.
How about the Peoples kid from Galax who set a VHSL record with 502 rushing yards in one game, is he still going to walk on or try another school? Watched his highlights and it seems he can play defense too.
Believe that he is prepping this year.
Someone on TSL a while back said this as well, and that he had picked up a full time offer from us. That was the first I had heard that before though.
Always interesting examining the weights, I always like to order by position to look through.
Overall thing that stands out to me is that the defense is pretty light but has a lot of speed. Seems built for spread teams but wonder if there might be some pains against power teams like Pitt.
Based on Bud's comments about the whip transitioning to more of a nickel-corner type position, I don't think Van Dyke being lighter and faster is a bad thing. However Bud (at the Nova HC Chalk Talk) was pretty clear that they really liked Chuck Clark in that spot.
Is Bud trying to do more of a 4-2-5 like TCU's defense?
He said that "the whip" needs to be a kid who can "run the whole defense." That means he needs to do what the whip does in run support in the base defense, but then has to be able to cover in the slot. Foster really sang the praises of Clark throughout the evening. I am still of the opinion that RVD is the guy because he can cover so well, but there is a lot of smoke to suggest that RVD may play elsewhere (Bitter's article/Foster's comments)
For Stroman, I'd be positively stunned if he plays this year.
I interviewed him last summer, and he was as light as a feather. He's been playing QB and CB in HS, so it makes sense that adding bulk hasn't really been his thing quite yet. He's got great speed, but some serious Gentry-fying is needed if he's going to be a serious contributor at corner, and that's going to take time.
Marshawn Williams....get out of the way
1) there are two guys who had good springs (Hansen and Haynes) listed without a number. We should feel a bit better about DL depth.
2) Keihn, who could have been a DE, seems to have cut some weight and is listed as a linebacker. Minor is actually bigger now. I think both have an opportunity to make the two deep with great fall camps.
Yep, seems more likely Keihn stays at LB now with him coming in lighter. I think that is definitely a good thing. Any thoughts on where Reid will end up playing? Since he's so big backer might be a good spot.
Yeah, Keihn is too light to worry about being moved to DE now. That's not a bad thing, I guess.
VT has a very good roster. If everything gels together, the team can surprise critics.
QB. It's all about the QB play.
and kicker...probably counting on one of the THREE Frs
oops
Couple thoughts:
1) AJ Hughes outweighs basically all of our skill position guys
2) Either Branthover has been hitting West End or the weight is wrong, 5'9" 202 seems a bit high for a PK
3) Osterloh is a MAN 321??
I met Parker Osterloh after the spring game last year and I can tell you the guy is huge. I'm all of 5'7" 130 (soaking wet and holding a bowling ball) and I felt like he could crush me if he took a wrong step. Super nice guy.
bahaha that comment starts out in good then turns for greatness and finishes with a nice small puppy in a basket quote. Love it!
I'm surprise he could see you since he's 6'8....only slightly shorter than Bucky. My hope is that he will crush opposing D that take a wrong step.
Punters with that kind of size and athleticism are never a bad thing, especially when their last name is Hughes. Miami should triple star AJ on their scouting report this year... Punter Swag
Hopefully Brent Benedict is doing better. Coach Searels love himself some big and tall O-linemen.
Rumor has it Wyatt Teller is over 300 lb.
Dadi Nicolas was supposed to get bigger over the summer. What happened?
C.J. Carroll is pretty much a midget. Those guys are nightmares for defense.
Me thinks that C.J. will be a fan favorite.
We have had good luck with Midget's....specifically Anthony.
I don't think anything's been updated for the returning players. Just the freshmen weighing in for the first time.
Yes. I was about to post same thing. Returning players usually have their weights updated at the beginning of camp.
That is what I thought as well, but I sure don't remember Dwayne Alford weighing in at 242 back in the spring.
That would explain why Bucky Hodges measured in so short..
Surely he will be a foot or two taller by the next measurement.
edit ab beat me to it
they only updated the weights of the incoming guys all the other weights are the same from the spring all others will be updated in august
Not sure if his weight was updated or not, but I've seen Dadi a few times this summer, and he looks about the same size. He may be heavier than 218, but not my much. He definitely won't be playing at 240 this season.
I find it that funny that one of the kickers (Slye) is heavier than most of our linebackers.
Well Slye was also a linebacker in high school and I think Bud mentioned giving him a shot to see what he could do there too.
I miss me some Schmitt ...
Yeah, he was a great K/P/DT.
The 3 OL signed are all 6'3". We desperately need some OT's in this class.
Brewer shrunk from 6'1" to 6'0" in his move to Virginia, but went from 185'ish to 202.
Haynes had a good spring but is he still going to be a DT at 222?
The WR bunch that came in seems like they have decent size overall. No big shockers there.
The OL group has done well getting their weight up so that is nice to see. I am not too concerned about them being 6'3" instead of 6'6", especially since Gallo will likely be a center.
DJ Reid is coming in as a man. I am excited to see him on the field hopefully.
He played at DE in the spring because of injuries. Alford was hurt so Haynes got some of his reps.
But what is his future position at that size?
If I had to guess, I'd say Tight End...
Way to hit that slow hanging curve.
Where's the horse on a treadmill listed? I thought for sure he'd make the oline this year. He's been training on that thing for years it seems.
Yeah, but he would be no good for the pros because all he does are horse collars...
It's a shame, every time I see him he's always working hard but he just doesn't seem to go anywhere with it...
I'm a draft horse, so don't get your hopes up. After the Sun Bowl I realized I needed to be in better shape, so I stayed on the treadmill and lost a lot of weight. I was up around 900kg at the end of the season, but now I'm weighing in closer to 750kg.
I come in at about 64 inches at the withers, though, so I'm only like 5'4", probably not big enough to be a tackle, the hooves make it hard to snap, and my lateral movement isn't great, so I'll be lucky to crack the travel squad at guard. There's this guy Teller in front of me and that kid is a monster.
They should give me a shot at kicker. But Beamer thinks that's out of whack, even though Gus proved it possible.
A Draft Horse should do very well at the NFL Combine however...I bet you are a workout warrior.
Do they have a Wonderlic for Horses?
nope, just salt licks
I'm very happy to see Vinny Mihota back at DE, if he manages to stay there, I feel much better about depth at that position
Non weight-related observations:
50 lettermen
62 guys with at least 3 years in the program (r-soph or older)
I notice Motuapuaka is the heaviest linebacker at 241 lbs.
Classic middle LB size....Vince Hall size.
Vince was listed at 238lbs and the same height.
Xavier Burke is headed to Fork Union.
C.J. Carroll is pretty much a midget. Those midgets are nightmares for defense.
Well played, sir.
Guesses on where McMillan ends up?
Would be great if he is so good at QB that he stays there, redshirts and starts his R-Soph year. That would mean that he is THAT good and passes Ford and Durkin. No complaints there.
That said, my guess is he follows the path of another HS QB turned star DB (Chancellor) and ends up at safety.
I really think we have three really solid QB prospects.
Agree. That's why I say that if he ends up being THE GUY, it means he is very special. I would think he would need to be a Marcus Vick with a good head on his shoulders!
Just noticed one on the roster that really makes me happy and proud of our HS.. Trent Young. He lives right up the street. Tackling Machine- A'la Cody Grimm/Jack Tyler redux. Great Kid, great Hokie family - and a very smart young man. Just wait and watch!
Steve Sobczak is the one that really jumps out at me...300 lb DT? Sign me up!
Dude is going to be a beast for us.
