Wyatt Teller feature story

If you all are interested, I interviewed Wyatt on his position change and jump up the depth chart for 2014-15.

I wrote this for my full-time job as Sports Editor at FauquierNOW.com.

Enjoy.

Great read! Looking forward to seeing Teller on the O-Line for quite a while.

“These people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

I can't wait to see him go beast mode on the schedule; he just looks the part here:

Great article! Now we just need to get him to play with those hands up a bit. As Coach Selfe used to say "Quick Pops! Quick Pops!"

Excellent read, Thanks.

I do have a question, though, for anyone with a football IQ higher than mine:

The prospects look great for Teller, who admits he thinks about a possible career in the National Football League. His size and quickness are ideal for an offensive tackle, an increasingly critical position in the pass-happy pro game.

I heard this a lot when he first made the position switch. Yet, he is playing guard, not tackle. If the consensus is that he could be an NFL-caliber tackle, why isn't he playing there? Especially considering tackle is a greater position need for us right now. My guess is we just had a more immediate need for guards last year when he switched? I trust that the coaches know what they're doing--they know more about football than me--but it just seems like the prevailing school of thought regarding his skill set and his role on the team are a tad incongruent.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

I still think tackle is the right fit, but guard is a lower risk position as he is learning to play offensive line. He has a tendency to keep his hands low and use a long windup before delivering a blow, especially in pass protection. The Hokies have the benefit of having two experienced tackles that can play while Wyatt gets more comfortable. With good guard prospects like Smith, Taraschke, Mitchell, and Pettit on the roster, don't be shocked when Wyatt moves out to right tackle next season.

Thanks, that answers my question. I'm not sure what the learning curve is like for a guard-to-tackle transition, but if Teller can do it, I'll feel a lot better about the tackle situation next year. An OL bookended by McLaughlin and Teller sure sounds good.

Glad Teller switched to the O-line. Now that hes settled and is not thinking too much, he should be able to help the running game.

I love hitting and throwing people around, he said. Thats what makes me Wyatt.

Yes. Yes please.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Has echoes of Russ Grimm's experience moving from D- to O-line,

"Theres no greater feeling than moving a man from point A to point B against his will."

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.
