GREENSBORO, NC — Virginia Tech defensive tackle Luther Maddy looked uncomfortable at the ACC Kickoff Weekend interview table.
When he spoke about his final team in Blacksburg, Maddy's confidence glowed through a soft-spoken demeanor.
He repeatedly praised the team's secondary in his media session. Then, he went one further.
"I think it's the best secondary in the country," he said before mention of a second-weekend matchup with Ohio State. "It would be good for the ACC and our team . . . .I think we're going to pull out that game. I think we'll win."
He cited himself as a leader of the defense in his senior season.
Maddy believes Coach Frank Beamer's emphasis that the little things are what will help the Hokies in close games.
"I can't put my hand on what's changed," he said. "I just know what we need to do."
The 6-foot-1, 291-pound lineman expressed confidence in more than just the secondary.
New linebackers? They all know the game, he said.
Smaller front seven?
"We have a real fast defensive line," Maddy explained. "You'll see us in the backfield a lot, a lot, a lot."
He noted no new implementations in the defense to accommodate the smaller line. Although, he hinted at last year's game against Pittsburgh for a minor tweak to this year's strategy.
Dadi Nicolas spent time as a stand-up rusher during that game.
Maddy said the team has used a bit of the formation in spring.
On the other side of the ball, the Florida native didn't express any concern despite admitting, "we need to find out who the quarterback is so we can get going."
When prompted to name a possible standout in 2014-15, he pointed to freshman tailback Marshawn Williams.
"The running game has gotten a lot better," Maddy relayed "(Williams) shows a lot of star potential when i watch him play."
Two consecutive down years haven't gone unnoticed by the 2013-14 third-team all-ACC player.
He can easily sympathize with the fans.
"If it was me, I'd be disappointed," he said.
The words resounded infinitely louder than Maddy's voice.
He succinctly answered the media swarm's questions. For the fall of 2014, the newfound leader is a company man.
What's more, Maddy alluded to the fact the rest of the team is too.
"I think it has to do with leadership," he said. "These guys understand we're not where we need to be.
"Last year after practice, I might see a couple guys staying after to get some work in. Nearly half the team is getting extra workouts. It gives me a lot of confidence."

Love this. Let's go to work!
That's how my mediocre-to-bad high school team ended up going to regionals for the first time ever last year.
You only get out of it what you put into it.
Now That's what I like to hear !! VT has two Players at the ACC Kickoff Weekend that are very good Team Players...Good article , Thank you.
Mark, I enjoyed following your updates all day on Twitter. Great article. I'm glad to see Big Lu stepping up as a defensive leader. Coupled with what Willie was saying, it sounds like good things coming out of the 'Burg.
Time for the Hokies to Suit up and get to work. We gotta take care of the games "were supposed to win". I have confidence in our D, I just hope our Offense surprises me. BTW, I just got my tickets to OSU game, see you guys at the Shoe when we pull the Upset.
Sweet! I'm trying to get some friends to get off their butts and commit so we can buy these things. It's gonna be about a paycheck from my summer job for a ticket, but I really think it'll be worth it.
I wanna win the games we're supposed to win. But I'm really ready to win one of those big games we aren't supposed to win. Will we beat anOSU?
ahh to be young again
so basically there was no leadership on last year's team
F'n awesome! Big Lu is to be respectedand feared!
I was pumped for football season before but now after reading this I'm all like
Ha. Ha.
I saw this and my mind immediately went to Sam Rogers as a toddler.
Quite fearsome.
I echo the kid's sentiment, but as a Flyers fan I can't in good conscience upvote this.
I think we can all agree it's an ugly kid.
Fixed it for you.
I was gonna say...Sam Rogers outgrew being a Penguins fan pretty quick
Maddys confidence gives me confidence.
can i just say this... being in florida about 2 hours from tallatrashy its such a breath of fresh air to have people go and speak on behalf of your program with some humbleness and to be well spoken and just all around positive representations of your school and program. its bad enough to have ESPN hype up free seafood university all day and good ole famous jamies but then to live this close to it and how proud the FSU fans are of him it just baffles me. if he was at VT i would be beggin for him to just shut up and play football. on a SN i dont think hes that good anyways hope he gets put in his place this year.... "you skrong, im skrong... put us together and we skrong den" idk if thats my fav equote from him or its the "erything we do we florida state we gone do it big den"
ACC...you've been warned!
