Loeffler Goes North to Recruit 2016 PA QB Brandon McIlwain

Scot Loeffler has Virginia Tech in good position with 2016, blue chip, Pennsylvania passer Brandon McIlwain.

Hokies offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler may be spending his coaching days south of the Mason-Dixon line right now, but he hasn't been afraid to venture back to the Northeast when it comes time to recruit quarterbacks for Virginia Tech.

Loeffler landed a pair of dynamic northern QB commits for the 2014 class in Andrew Ford and Chris Durkin, and he's after a third for the 2016 cycle.

Brandon McIlwain β€” a 4-star dual threat quarterback according to the 247Sports Composite ranking β€” may hail from Newtown, Pa., but he's giving some thought to coming down to Blacksburg to join the Hokies.

"Tech has such a great campus and great facilities," McIlwain said. "And Coach Loeffler is such a smart coach and has been around some great quarterbacks, and he tells me I could be a big part of things there."

McIlwain got a chance to experience Tech firsthand last week when he visited for the Hokies' prospect camp on July 14.

"I loved it," McIlwain said. "It was a great experience, getting to meet the staff and see the campus."

The head coach of McIlwain's Council Rock North High School, Adam Collachi, sensed how positive the experience was when he talked to the rising junior immediately after the camp.

"I spoke with him when he came back and I think he came away very impressed with the staff," Collachi said. "He walked away with a great feeling about the campus and the program."

The Hokies only offered McIlwain on May 1 of this year, but Loeffler has had his eye on the athletic passer for some time. He first reached out to Collachi last year and has since stayed in constant contact with McIlwain.

"He came up to visit me once during the school year last year and now we talk on the phone at least once a week, even if nothing's going on," McIlwain said.

McIlwain may be on the smaller side at 6-1, 205 pounds, but his outstanding athleticism and competitiveness are clearly the traits that attracted Loeffler's attention.

"He's a dynamic athlete and his competitive nature is just something I've never seen before," Collachi said. "His willingness to prepare and become a real student of the game really set him apart. He's just as competitive in practice as he is in games."

McIlwain's abilities were immediately apparent to Collachi. He entrusted Council Rock's complex offense to McIlwain from the moment he joined the team.

"He's been starting since day one as a true freshman," Collachi said. "And we run a spread offense, hurry up, no huddle. But he got it down and we let him run the ball some too."

But even though he runs a spread scheme, McIlwain feels he'd thrive in any offense.

"I think I can play anywhere," McIlwain said. "Under center or shotgun with quarterback runs, it doesn't matter to me."

Collachi agrees that one system or another won't limit him.

"No matter what the situation is, he'll thrive. He's that dedicated," Collachi said.

However, he does need to work on a few things in his final year of high school.

"He's still young, he just turned 16," Collachi said. "He's fundamentally sound, but he can definitely work on his decision making, protecting the ball more. He can learn to play for another down more often."

Loeffler has earned a reputation as a coach that can develop young quarterbacks, and McIlwain admits that's part of what he looks for in a program.

"The main thing is looking at how I can work with the coaches, if I think I can form a good relationship with them," McIlwain said. "I also definitely take pride in my education. Academics wouldn't necessarily eliminate a school for me, but it's very important."

But McIlwain isn't shy about also saying that he wants to get on the field quickly.

"I want the potential for early playing time," he said. "I don't really want to wait. I know a starting job isn't guaranteed, but I want to at least compete for one right away."

Loeffler can certainly offer a chance for some healthy competition, given that Ford and Durkin are complete unknowns for now, but plenty of others schools are making pitches to McIlwain. He has 22 offers from schools besides Tech, including Penn State, South Carolina, Florida, Auburn and Ohio State.

He recently camped at Ohio State and Penn State and has a visit to South Carolina coming in the next few days, but he insists that he has yet to narrow things down.

"I've visited so many schools and I've got a couple more coming," McIlwain said. "I'm keeping in touch with everyone that offered me, but I don't really have any clear favorites quite yet."

McIlwain said he plans to announce towards the end of the summer, but Collachi thinks that the Hokies are in good standing with him so far.

"He's highly academically motivated and he also wants a good tradition, and Virginia Tech certainly fit those criteria," Collachi said.

If the Hokies can land McIlwain, Collachi thinks they'll have earned a solid presence in the locker room.

"He's very charismatic, a natural leader," he said. "Everyone on the team and in the hallways at school sort of gravitates to him."

If 2016 rolls around and the Hokies are still looking for someone to take command under center, Loeffler just might be glad he made the long journey north to find McIlwain.

It's really excellent to see us take a new strategy to recruiting. If you bring in one or so decent QBs with each class, you're in good shape.

I will always prefer the duel-threat QB, because of the way they can keep drives going.

As an opposing defense, I would fear the duel-threat QB, too. Of course, that might depend on whether he chooses the swords or the pistols.

En Garde
Duel

I would definitely fear a Hodges style threat.

saw image first and totally thought you were going another direction with the dual threat comment...

Rising senior and a '16 recruiticorn? Is my math off or would that make him a '15?

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
β€œI served in the United States Navy"

All the recruiting sites list him as a '16, I was wondering about the rising senior part too.

Did you guys sleep through the whole 2014 season or something? its july 2015.. we won the first college playoff last year, after an awesome year started by blowing out ohio state in the second game of the season.

Damn I guess I drank way too much during the games because I don't recall that at all... :)

It was a typo, he's a rising junior.

Thank you for the clarification

Tyrod 2.0?

One can dream; but I think that is some crippling expectations to put on any recruit

The Dude Abides

McIlwain is a good prospect. Loeffler can turn him into a great QB to run his complex system. Theres still work to be done to get him to sign.

Every time I turn around Loeffler is at it again. Getting in there mixing it up with national QB recruits, and the recruits coming away impressed.

Taking a look over at 247

Dual Threat - 6'1 205lbs - Rates out at a very high 4* Composite (0.9549)

We are one of 29 schools who have offered. Among the offers are Penn St, Duke, Auburn, S. Carolina, Clemson, Florida, Miami, Michigan St, Nebraska, UNC, Ohio State, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Right now, it appears he's really high on South Carolina, with Penn St coming in second. For the time being, we're not even on the radar, with the schools he's warming up to being Duke, Penn St, and South Carolina.

That being said, it does not appear the site has been updated with any information based on his camp last week at Tech. Whether or not that's a good thing... who knows.

His 247 profile is way off. They haven't updated it in like 3 months.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

To be fair, they did update it with all the S.Carolina stuff a month ago... You know, probably because SEC and all

It's going to be tough to get him. Everyone wants this kid and he is going to have his choices. Hopefully, the Vick/Tyrod factor would appeal to him given his style of play.

He plans to announce at the end of summer? That'd be a huge starting piece for the 2016 class. Seems pretty early though for a high caliber recruit in the next cycle. Fingers crossed

Jack Bauer fears no one. Except Xavier Adibi.

Alex can correct me, but based on on the previous sentence, it implies he plans to announce some favorites at the end of the summer.

Would make more sense. Either way, hoping for the good guys

Yup, he'll be naming favorites at the end of the summer. Sorry if that was confusing. It seems like we'll be one of them, but who knows haha

You are doing great work, Alex. Thanks.

I know this about the QB, but my eyes kept being drawn to number 16. Reminded me of Coale. Seemingly always finding a hole in the coverage, providing a safety blanket option, and blocking down field.

Little digging reveals him to be Matt Cabo (highlights) with very similar build as Danny. Not much information on him other than the Hudl profile, so I guess I have a crap eye for talent.

Only a Sophomore if I'm not mistaken, could be a late bloomer on the recruiting trail.

That is what a 4* QB looks like...and not even a high school Jr yet.

I think we have a pretty good idea on what a 4* QB looks like... we just signed 2 of them with this last recruiting class...

You misspelled 3*.

Alum's going by 247's rankings.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

But selectively ignoring the 247 composite rankings. Nevertheless I'll rephrase...he misspelled "borderline 3*/4*".

Kids going to be special, his running reminds me of a certain number 7 that wore a vt jersey

glennon? hes faster than glennon!

VT Class of 2017

Yeah, I saw that on the film but was scared to say anything. I really have some mental dissonance looking at that 12 year old kid in the pic, then matching it to that MV-like, kick it into 4th, sprint away from the field in the video.

Kid's got some next-level speed, no doubt.

And even though I'm not a fan of his throwing motion, in these highlights at least he's getting the ball out quickly and on target. I'd love to see Loeffler get a chance to iron out the mechanics on this kid. He'd be scary good.

Seems to have good pocket presence, and also seems to keep his head up. Liking the play at 1:16 a lot -- moves up, could run for big yards left or right, but finds a target and hits him in stride to move the sticks from what looks to be an "and 15 to go".

Now: I'm about to say something completely over the top. Look at the play @ 1:30. Anyone remember MV7 pulling this move a few times? Sees the pressure through the back of his helmet, ducks under a tackle, spins and makes the play? Serious case of deja-vu.

want

Keep in mind that he was only a 15 year old HS Soph in that film...

Thanks Alex. All of that sounds pretty positive. Fingers crossed on this one. I really like what this kid brings to the table.
fingers crossed
