"Make decisions from a balanced perspective. The best decisions are based on facts and data. The person with the best info wins nine out of 10 times."
In today's climate, coaches that ignore facts and stats are dinosaurs, but some of them persist. Thankfully Buzz is not one of them. I'm incredibly excited to see where he takes VT Basketball.

Even mediocre success, while showing improvement and I think everybody will be happy. An upset here and there, win the close ones, improvement is all I want for the next 3-5 years. Sounded like he is also content being in the shadow of the football program, realizing that pulls the spotlight, and attention off of him totally. The fan base, donors, alumni, students - We already know how to get behind a team. We know how to be rabid, we know how to make home court our house, we know how to pack the opposing teams house as well. He just has to give us something to follow, keep the juices flowing after football honestly
We just needed somebody to buzz the tower and wake us up. I'm excited.... growing up in a UNC family, and consistently attending games on Tobacco road... I'm tired of hearing it.

Since Joey was before Sam (despite the fact that Sam was dormant inside a volcano until Joey graduated), Sam couldn't be considered for these rankings. Rankings were based on the time Joey graduated, at which point Riggins and The Icebox led the list.

While this article points out Buzz's persistence to research - he might not have been as careful and thorough as usual in coming to VT. According to a friend who went to a coaching/team camp with Buzz at VT this summer Buzz had no real idea about Virginia Tech and Blacksburg until he got a phone call from Whit. Evidently, the friendship runs deeper than many of us thought and Buzz took Whit for his word. Buzz never even came to campus before the press conference - but still committed to VT and Whit.
Granted, all the info about Marquette and the lack of TV time, and the thorough interview probably led into the decision - but I firmly believe that without Whit Babcock - this never even comes close to happening.

I'm just about certain that Buzz mentioned in his introductory press conference that the first time he had walked into Cassell was for that press conference. Thus what you heard is indeed accurate. Serendipity - Buzz decided he wanted to leave, and Whit had an opening and called. An important conduit in all this is Mick Cronin, the Cincinnati head coach. Cronin is good friends with Buzz, and of course could act as an honest evaluator of Whit to Buzz. It's only because of happenstance that all the cards fell into place at just the right time. If Whit had delayed and given Johnson the 'extra year' that so many internet posters desired, look where we'd be - and we'd never know what we lost. We're extremely fortunate to have Buzz, and let's all remember that nothing is forever. He might be here five years, he might be here ten years. He might be here for twenty, but let's not take him for granted while he is here. Because of the timing and bold action by Whit, we have a REAL opportunity for extended basketball success. That is what is required for success - bold action. We have the people in place for that in basketball now, with Whit & Buzz.

1 And God looked down upon the great Hokie Nation
2 And saw that they were in pain from being in last place in the ACC.
3 So God in all his great power concocted a plan to bring his people to great joy.
4 God spoke to Buzz and said "Go to Virginia Tech"
5 And so it came to pass

Great post, thanks for sharing! After reading that article, it's abundantly clear why Buzz came to Blacksburg.
Ohhh, the pains of living in New York.
This quote made me giddy:
"Make decisions from a balanced perspective. The best decisions are based on facts and data. The person with the best info wins nine out of 10 times."

Hopefully he realizes he has TONS of job security at Virginia Tech
In other words, Buzz is College basketball's "Money Ball".
Fantastic. Make decisions based on facts.
Great article. He wanted to be at a place that as long as he was successful, it would be relevant and with us being the ACC, that will happen.
Why did he leave?
Because he's a smart man and saw a potential blooming garden when others could only focus on the weeds.
That's deep man. Real deep.
Love the smoke comin out yo ears.
...because Sam Rogers asked him to...
This ^^^ seems most plausible.

Especially since you probably can't understand what they're saying. that UNC education, it'll get after ya
Isn't it obvious?

(This never gets old.)
Out of curiosity, but who is that?
Hey, she is a Hokie.
True, but I think it's because her boyfriend/husband is? A Hokie nonetheless though.
Must...resist...the down vote
Only the 3rd greatest fullback to ever play the game. Right behind
and
Note, pictures of Shawna Waldron all grown up...dayum.

The answer is simple:
1 And God looked down upon the great Hokie Nation
2 And saw that they were in pain from being in last place in the ACC.
3 So God in all his great power concocted a plan to bring his people to great joy.
4 God spoke to Buzz and said "Go to Virginia Tech"
