Countdown: 30 -- Is It Football Season Yet?

There are only 30 more days until kickoff.

[HokieSports.com]

It has been a long 7 months. It's a punch to the gut when the clock runs out on the bowl game. Eight months of hockey, basketball and baseball are staring you in the face as you try to catch your breath. Sure, you could watch classic games on TV, but how many of those games feature Tech? And of those games, how many of them involve us on the winning side? The B1G Network wouldn't be replaying the 2012 Sugar Bowl as often — if ever — had the referees made the correct call.

I will freely admit that my love of college football began in earnest during my freshman year in 2002. Prior to that, I had no rooting interest, and I have always struggled to fully engage in meaningless games if I have no dog in the fight. But with each passing season, Hokie football has become increasingly important to the point where fanatical is a strong understatement. If you're reading this piece, we are probably traveling through the offseason in the same boat.

A disclaimer for those of you currently enrolled at Tech: The love affair continues to grow the longer you're away from Blacksburg. You look back on the experiences you had in and around Lane Stadium and you can't help but wish you took greater advantage of each opportunity and savored every moment a little bit more. You will wish you didnt leave early during a September game against an FCS Directional University, and you will almost certainly wish you went a little bit harder before, during and after that big night game against a conference rival.

It's not just about Enter Sandman and the Hokie Pokie, key plays or "stick it in." There is The Walk, the lead up to Enter Sandman, standing continuously for 3+ hours and screaming until you temporarily blackout from the lack of oxygen. It is all in support of your friends, fellow alumni and brothers-in-arms. Football reminds us of how much we love our university and the Tech community, and it all revolves around us gathering in similar clothing to watch a game played by kids. Funny, isn't it?

I grew up going to Yankees and New York (football) Giants games. Bob Sheppard, "The Voice of God," was the long-time PA announcer for both teams. I remember the first Giants game that I went to and heard his voice; it was strangely comforting, hearing him say "Jeff Hostetler" in a similar tone as "Don Mattingly". Whenever I hear the Hokies PA announcer at football and basketball games, live or on TV, I can't help but have the same warm and fuzzy feeling.

These experiential elements have come to re-define the fall for me. It has gotten to the point where "Fall" isn't really a part of my lexicon. "Autumn" has always seemed a bit pretentious to me, kind of like when people pronounce it toh-mah-toh. "Fall" is correct from a descriptive standpoint, as leaves eventually drop off the trees. I have gotten to the point where I associate leaves changing color and falling to the ground with football season, and not the other way around. How does that bumper sticker go? "If God isn't a Hokie, then why do the leaves turn orange and maroon during football season?"

My love for the football experience has become freakishly augmented to the point where it has altered my mental response to certain sensory experiences.

Cool nights and crisp breezes remind me of football season.

Campfires and the smell of meat on a charcoal grill remind me of football season.

Bacon reminds me of...*shudder*...noon kickoffs during football season.

Sunblock reminds me of...you guessed it...football season. (I'm pale to the point of being clear, and I learned quickly that 3:30 kickoffs in the East Stands will light up my nose and turn me into Rudolph).

As time has passed, my perception of the calendar year has evolved into a football-centric one. There is "football season" and "offseason." The aforementioned sensory connections that my brain makes only contribute to this perverted viewpoint.

We spend our offseasons obsessing over recruiting news, updated weights and max testing results, depth chart adjustments and future scheduling announcements. These rare morsels of information help feed the obsessive beasts we have all become.

During the season, we live in this constant cycle of emotional peaks and valleys. Gamedays involve an anxiety level at DefCon1, followed by a day spent recovering emotionally and then 5 days eagerly waiting for the next game. We repeat this masochistic cycle for weeks on end, before we are graced with a weekend off that is spent catching up on all of the tasks we had put off. It is also the only weekend a sane and loving friend or family member can acceptably schedule a wedding.

Football season has become the anchor to an otherwise mundane calendar year. When you enter the workforce, the weeks and months typically blend together into this endless string of 5 workdays and 2 days off. For us Hokies, the monotony is broken up by two things: vacations and football.

We pass the time, accomplishing what we need to get done to free our schedules come September. We're not necessarily going through the motions — that would devalue what we do each day — but physically and/or emotionally trying weeks just feel more enjoyable in October knowing that there is a key matchup waiting for you on Saturday.

Sure, this all sounds a bit crazy and obsessive, but I can't be alone...can I? Is it football season yet?

I just want us to be good while I'm still a student.

We are good, we just haven't been great. We're spoiled as a result, which is OK. Just think of the Hoos; a great year for them is 4 wins and the return of Zima. I feel the mojo returning to Blacksburg. I feel a return to great. I predict an unexpectedly awesome year!

That's what parents say. How 'bout a 4.0 for ol' Mom and Dad in Fall Semester

Well, a 3.93 last semester was pretty good ;)

...until you temporarily blackout from the lack of oxygen.

This is the story you decided to go with?

Maybe this isn't the right article to post in but I can't wait. Tickets have been purchased and accommodations are booked. Where is Hokie nation going to tailgate in Columbus and party the night before? It will be my first and possibly last time there...

"Two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I am not yet completely sure about the universe.” -Einstein

I have been thinking the same thing. Given that many of the folks I go to the home games with won't be making this trip (ended up just getting tickets for my oldest son, who is 8, and me), I definitely want to know where to congregate on Friday night and Saturday to have a good time with the O&M contingent. And, if anyone else is bringing kids, that's all the better.

I am still waiting for Tech to confirm I have tickets before booking. I also have a friend who lives there that I could crash with so booking isn't as important.

Those who would call it crazy and obsessive probably drink Zima.

My experience in Lane has been little of late, but dates back to my youth. My first time there banners waved and blasts from those plastic horns sold by concessioneers bounced this way and that with the autumn winds. If the cannon went off that day in 1967 (we lost to VMI that year but still went 7-3) I don't recall as we sent Villanova home with a 3-0 loss. Later as a student walk on I got to participate in a little bit of play on the field myself and my two most memorable moments went something like this: "You can't advance a fumble on defense. That's high school." And, "That's why I'm trying to teach you to stay put," as I took the fake and the QB ran around my corner untouched. Interestingly enough, I got to play the whole spring game as a right corner, but can remember only one play well from the day in which on a sweep I tried to tackle high and was flattened by a steam roller. Being better at football than school though and not on scholarship I decided to hit the books and gave it up. Maybe too soon, I don't know. But I will never trade those games in the stands I shared with friends (some named Jack Daniels), dates, and fellow Hokies and Hoakies of all ages as we finished the Sharp years and rode into the Dooley days. I would like to have had a coach at some point in my life like a Frank Beamer, but I could never trade my Hokie fans for those of any other school. If I could go back to any point in time, I'd choose one of those Saturday afternoons.

Football season can't come soon enough this year. "Let's go Hokies!"

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. " Rocky B.

Just got my tickets arranged (West stands!) and already had a parking pass (Lot 8, Litton Reaves) lined up.

I'm so ready for football!

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

My west stands tickets are in the mail. I find the shade a lot more important than the sun. So I just stand and scream over there.

Same here. We're in section 4 so still fairly close to the NEZ. We're actually in the same section as last season, but several rows closer to the field. Moving up in the world. Slowly.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I moved down about 5 rows as well, but I am over in section 18.

Ok ticket help needed. So section 4 row TT, section 20 row U or section 2 row CC?

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

I'd go with 4, it's significantly higher than the other two, but more central.

If you want one of the lower ones, I personally like being closer to the tunnel (so section 2). But honestly any of those sound like good options.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I agree with Bone, Sections 2 and 20 are the farthest out. TT actually has decent seats in that you are high enough to see the whole field well. But all of the seats you mentioned aren't bad. They are in the stadium and on the cool side.

That was beautiful.

When does Camp officially open/ what day does anyone know. Mr Bitter if you are watching any info would be nice.

PS: we need a Bitter logo like batman has his batlight thing. Maybe a bottle of Bitters will do the trick??

lol

Just the logo?

For us Hokies, the monotony is broken up by two things: vacations and football.

This is true. I save vacation days for Fridays to travel to Blacksburg. Vacation = Football.

Well, other than a few trips here and there....

BillDozer's trailer still dropping tomorrow?

Wait It's already past 4am and haven't seen anything. Did I miss it?!

So, basically, this will be me today:

"Exit light..."

standing continuously for 3+ hours and screaming until you temporarily blackout from the lack of oxygen

Good, I always thought I was kind of weird when I would scream so much I'd start seeing spots blinking in front of me. Glad to know I'm not alone in my insanity.

I also would get a headache from screaming

proper hydration prior to kickoff can help prevent headaches

Could have been from too much Louisville Chugger

This guys seems to go all popeye on this beer. Before he drinks he seems pretty scrawny and then while he drinks it seems like he grows and gets a bit hefty. mmmmm..... Beer

same here. I always chocked it up to heatstroke, but it could have been the screaming, too

The sentiment and feel of this piece is what made me move back to Blacksburg after six wayward years post undergrad. Five seasons as a student wasn't enough. There's no other place I'd rather be.

FYI, here's what it looks like in 78 degree Blacksburg at the moment.
