so unranked VT @ #6 tOSU...upset city!

unless, of course, we thump W&M by 50+, then we might be #23 or something...

I don't have to take this abuse from you, I've got hundreds of people dying to abuse me.

I think voters like to know who is under center before ranking a team not named: USC, FSU, Bama, Oklahoma etc. I'm fine with VT not being ranked.

I see why my post disappeared.

Joe, you showoff, you...

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

In all fairness, I beat you to it by about 8 minutes.

I blame my kids.

Why is there a coaches poll? Aren't they more concerned with gameplans?

To balance out the sportswriters.

To give low-level coaches assistants something to work on between getting coffee and washing cars.

Bama too high, Michigan State too low IMO.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Very rational and astute. Two words that have never been assosciated with the coaches poll.

Saben has a few national title rings. The only ring Daintoni (sic?) has is around his toilet bowl.

Its a matter of time before VT cracks into the top 25.

  1. Florida only 20 votes from being ranked? They were 4-8 last year!
  2. Not sure if i agree with Duke being behind Miami(FL).
  3. We'll see if UCF can do anything after losing Storm Johnson and Blake Bortles. Maybe they had a good recruiting class to warrant all those votes.
  4. Ohio State is only 4 votes behind Auburn. If Auburn looks flat against Arkansas in Week 1, then OSU might jump them.

But it is very likely Auburn will jump over OSU in week two...

"Not Sure" is the only way to discuss preseason polls...preseason polls i do not like, i do not like them one bit...

I don't have to take this abuse from you, I've got hundreds of people dying to abuse me.

So am I not allowed to have an opinion on the results of the poll being discussed in this thread? I'm not sure if I understand what you're getting at; of course I understand how meaningless preseason polls can be.

I was just trying to state that Duke was an enigma last year, winning 10 games. We played a remarkably awful game against them offensively and they took advantage of their schedule. However they also almost beat a good Texas A&M team in the Peach Bowl. I'm not sure if I'm sold on them quite yet.

They did beat Miami, though, who has a tendency to jump high in the rankings early in the season before they actually play anyone. So if I were to predict how good I think these teams will be, I'm not sure if I would put Miami over Duke right now. Duke did beat them last season, won more games (and the division), and put up a stronger showing in their bowl game.

You two agree; looks like buggzy was just trying to take a light-hearted and/or sarcastic approach to the polls.

"Exit light..."

thank you

Thanks. That's how I wanted to take it, but it felt weird that he crossed out everything I said. No harm done.

I don't think he was attacking your opinion, rather he was attacking preseason polls.

Oh good, I'm not the only one that read it like that.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Can we have an honest conversation about Stanford? Because I have a few questions.

1.) Why are they so good?
2.) Is their Offensive Coordinator really called the "Associate Head Coach and Andrew Luck Director of Offense"? Someone double check that for me. Here's the link.

Yes, the position is called the "Andrew Luck Director of Offense" thanks to an anonymous donor endowing the position in Luck's name.

So, Oliver Luck?

Nah, he's in Morgantown, I think.

Oh that's so gross. Upvote for you, sir.

Stanford is good because they are smart. Harbaugh took them out of the toilet, and Shaw has kept them out of it by creating a brand of smash-mouth physical football. They tooled us over pretty good and they are on a roll right now.

The Dude Abides

Stanford is good because they are tough and disciplined. They don't have an outstanding QB (Hogan can run a bit, but he's got work to do as a passer. Sorta reminds me as a not-as-strong LT3.) or great receivers. Shoot, they don't even have the tight ends anymore. They have a solid-to-great OLine and this past year they had an outstanding back supplemented by several good ones. They had one great playmaker out wide in Ty Montgomery and basically bludgeoned everyone into submission. I think all of last year they had maybe 2 holding calls against their line. Tough and disciplined will get you pretty far in college football.

And a good D!

Pretty sure Miami won't have any votes after they lose to Loserville to open the season.

So we are the 4th best in our division, 7th in the ACC.. Love being underrated.

Funny how these things play out. If you threw out the poll and just asked "what do you think of the ACC" or "what do you think of the SEC", you'd get different results, closer to the media days ballots.

What matters is where you finish.

#Let's Go - Hokies

My biggest issue with this (and other preseason) polls... and why I think it does matter: it's not clear to me whether coaches/media are told to vote teams as they would rank them week by week (best at that particular time, as proven based on wins), or as where they expect teams will end up (based on the future schedule). Pollsters (whoever they are) do not do a good enough job leapfrogging teams IMO (except at the beginning of the season) - towards the second half of the season, you could have a great win but don't really move up unless someone ahead of you loses. Similarly, teams aren't always evaluated fairly after a loss (lets say a 25th ranked team loses to a top 3 team on a fluke play.... IMO the loser should improve in the rankings). All told, it's not too uncommon to end up with a couple of head-scratching rankings. And with the lack of transparency and criteria the selection committee will use, I think the polls do matter, since they'll likely be taken into consideration. Rant over.

Beating a to 10 team in its own stadium would put the hokies in the top ten.

Not immediately.

wouldn't be surprised if 2 of the top 5 lost in week one, AU and FSU. PROBABLY NOT GOING TO HAPPEN, but wouldn't be surprised at all.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the Hokies absolutely dominated the Buckeyes and they were still ranked ahead of us afterwards. Or even more laughably if we slipped in the rankings.
No respect

Yep, this is what will happen when we get there:

6-5, 10-1-1, 2-9, 3-8, 6-4-1, 6-5, 5-6, 2-8-1, 9-3, 8-4, 10-2, 10-2, 7-5, 9-3, 11-1, 11-1, 8-4, 10-4, 8-5, 10-3, 11-2, 10-3, 11-3, 10-4, 10-3, 11-3, 11-3, 7-6, 8-5, 7-6, 7-6, 10-4, 9-4, 6-7, 8-5..........

Not immediately, but all we'd have to do after that is win out.

I don't agree with Ohio State being ranked over Michigan State after how last year ended and with tOSU having to travel to East Lansing this year. Definitely think they are overrated but I'm cool with that.

I don't believe polls should start till like 4 games in. A team could have a cupcake schedule as #1 and stay that way, not giving other teams a chance. Glad that if you win your conference you are in the playoffs.

There are at least three teams with new head coaches placed well in the poll, I noticed. Granted they've all had recent success (either the coach or the team), but how they work together is yet to be determined.

-Also of note (heard on radio): USCe is the only SEC team with a 1st place vote.

I thought I'd do an experiment with the google:

Looks like realignment in the past few years is influencing the search results, and the securities and exchange commission is preventing us from seeing what people search for when it comes to the SEC. Although it does claim the SEC is not responsible, so I guess that could be either one. Apparently, people only care about getting the pac 12 on tv, the big ten is insulted more often than not, and the acc similarly gets little respect

Don't worry, Miami will be ranked after they beat Louisville to give the ACC 4 ranked teams. From there, it's just a matter of time before their #1/#2 showdown with Florida State in November, just watch.

SHE's BACK!

Must resist the urge to downvote an opinion, even if I find it offensive.

Yeah, as much as I dislike Petrino and Louisville I hate Miami.

It's only an opinion if it's wrong, and trust me, Miami's back this year.

Opinion: A view or judgement on something, not necessarily based on fact.

Even if it's true, it's still an opinion.

Miami IS back this year. They didn't decide to give up playing college football, or any other sport for that matter. So, in actuality, they are BACK. Your statement isn't inaccurate.
