Tyrod Turning Heads at Fall Camp

Looks like Kubiak's new system is really giving Tyrod the ability to spread his wings. Would love to see him start and play a full game some time.

Hopefully he will be like Schaub (hate the comparison to a hoo but similar sitution) where he gets a chance at a starting gig when his contract is up after the season.

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

Shit, I hope his story turns out way better than Schaub's.

Schaub was great for a few season before he imploded last year. Now he gets to play tutor to the younger Carr after he previously replaced the elder one. I just hope he does a good job and Carr leads my Raiders back to relevence...

Schaub has had one bad year in his career. I think he is going to bounce back.

Tyrod isn't a hoo his story is already better.

Worst thing that could have happened to Tyrod was the stupid contract the Ravens gave Flacco. Now, they have to play Joe, even if and when he's terrible out there, just to justify giving him the contract. Worst thing that could happen to them is to play Tyrod, have him start to win, and then have to deal with Joe's contract riding the bench with a QB starting that would also be demanding a bigger salary after the season.

He needs to get away from that franchise if he ever hopes to play meaningful snaps in the future.

technically, they could just cut Flacco in January and never pay him another dime. no guaranteed contracts in the NFL. it would simply mean the 2 years they did pay him were REALLY expensive from an accounting standpoint since the bulk of the money was likely paid in signing/roster bonuses prior to each season.

I don't have to take this abuse from you, I've got hundreds of people dying to abuse me.

Actually, that would be ideal for the ravens. Flacco's contract is very back heavy.

If they do that, they get into dead money hell, which will negatively impact them far worse than just keeping that contract on the roster would.

The Dude Abides

I think talk from Kubiak and Harbaugh is trolling for a low round draft choice. Love TT but he's not going to supplant Flacco unless Flacco is really hurt badly (see LT3 and Zumwalt). If they can create some buzz in the preseason for TT he'll be traded. If not, another year on the bench and he may get picked up next year as a FA or off to the CFL. Ravens are not playing Flacco because of the contract, they are playing to win.

Joe Flacco was likely 4 games away from being cut in 2012 with there being mounting pressure from the fans and media to play Tyrod in a game, just because of how bad it was getting. Then, the defense went into "oh damn, this is Ray Lewis' last year, time to get our shit together" mode and the rest is history. He rides the defense to the Super Bowl and cashes in a big check for about 4 weeks worth of play.

That was a stupid contract when they signed it, and its still a stupid contract now. Flacco was the absolute least of the reasons they won it all that year (in fact, his play was a major reason why they almost didn't make the playoffs), yet they rewarded him as if he was the savior. Just an awful contract that is going to hurt them in the future.

Rides the defense to the Super Bowl? Least of the reasons they won it? I have no qualms with saying Flacco during the 2012 regular season didn't earn his contract. He didn't. But you have to be stupid to say the defense carried him to the Super Bowl. Trent Dilfer was carried by the Ravens defense in 2000. I'd love to see the stats of a QB not getting carried if throwing 11 TD's and 0 INT's in the playoffs is sub par.

I have no issue with fans here clamoring for Tyrod, I myself was wondering if the Ravens should make the switch at the end of that season. Fact is, Flacco had one of the best playoff runs ever. They paid him because they thought he has the potential to bring Baltimore another ring and I think he can too.

No denying that he was phenomenal in those playoffs. However, he has never had a regular season or any other playoff run to deserve that contract, or to make me think he will win another super bowl.

His regular season history worries me too. Flacco seems to turn it on in the playoffs though, with his run that year and being a Lee Evans drop/Cundiff almost kicking the ball out of the stadium away from a Super Bowl appearance. I just wish the Ravens would draft offense a little more and rely less on bringing in veteran receivers. Worked with Mason and Boldin, but not a sustainable plan.

Completely agree here. I totally understand people thinking Flacco doesn't deserve the contract based on regular season play - but how was he not a huge part of that postseason run? Like you said, 11 TDs with no picks. With 2 road games against the heavily favored Pats and Broncos. And a running back who lost 3 fumbles in their 4 games. They had no choice but to give him a huge contract - but in my opinion he earned it. Even if he doesn't play up to its value the next few years - he brought them a SB win. You could ask any fan of the Eagles, Browns, Bengals, Texans, Panthers, Jaguars, Bills, Titans, Chargers, Falcons, Lions, Cardinals, or even teams who have won a Super Bowl, and I bet most would trade a few years of overpaying a QB for a Championship.

I love me some Tyrod but I don't think he could have been the guy to take the Ravens to the Super Bowl. Maybe on another team in another situation (I would like to think he could but who knows) - but Flacco's contract has little to do with it. Tyrod was there for 2 years before that contract and never got to play either

As a Panthers fan if we were to win the super bowl this year an cam played well and great in the playoffs I would be 110% ok with making cam the highest paid QB.

Because it's a stretch to imagine a 12-4 team from last year with the #2 defense could win? Okay then.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Nope because the panthers will still be paying Jonathan Stewart to sit on his rear...If Cam has a bad year, I guarantee you that Gettleman will use that in the contract negotiations

LT3 and Leal. Lots of fans were clamoring and lots of people made TE jokes. Contract may have been stupid but only one guy has played in Jan and Feb. Let's see how this plays out. Love TT, but you ain't done it until you do it.

Man i really hope he gets a shot at starting someday soon. I think there are a couple teams who could have him starting for them right now and be an improvement too.

The only reason I ever watch the Ravens is for that small chance of seeing TT.
I really hope he gets his chance someday.

@AMB4VT

So do I, but being a career backup in the NFL isn't a bad career to have. Stay healthy, make bank.

Also much easier to get into Coaching and front office jobs after the NFL, as a backup QB.

Just like Gary Kubiak, Tyrod's new offensive coordinator and former Texans head coach.

Not a bad point. You've got NFL experience, but you haven't either won or screwed up enough for anyone to really hate you.

I'd love to see Tyrod come join the VT staff after he finishes off his NFL career. TT is a great clean brand ambassador.

No doubt-Will Furrer is my hero.

I don't have a darn thing against Flacco per se, but every time I watch the Ravens play, there's a small part of me that really wants him to suffer some sort of game- or season-ending injury. Again, nothing against the guy, I just really wanna see Tyrod. Does that make me a bad person? Eh, maybe. Go Hokies.

I do the same thing. I am more critical of Flacco than I was of Sean Glennon.
