Talented defensive prospect Ricky DeBerry announced his final eight a few moments ago. While some teams have targeted DeBerry as a pass rushing outside linebacker, the Hokies are recruiting DeBerry as a defensive end.
Sorry for the delay but here it is. It's in No Order. pic.twitter.com/YFYa1W8pxI— Rick DeBerry (@TheFranchize__) August 5, 2014

As always, there is Ohio State working to get a guy we want - it feels like lately we battle them far more than we battle UVA/nearby schools for recruits
GEEZ, Before Urban Freaking Meyer took that job, I was really stoked that OSU was on a downward spiral and would not be an elite program for some time. Then Urban takes the job and about 10 recruits de-commit and switch over to the Buckeyes that year. 2015 and 2016 will both be tough games. Id take a spilt in that series.......or 2 wins just like we did against Nebraska and Texas A&M.
Damn, those were good 'ol days. Not that I watched VT football back then, but still.
2014 and 2015.
battle at bristol 2016 though!!
To be fair, we battle any number of high profile programs for recruits far more than we do other Va programs. Those are the guys we need to battle, not London's crew or ODU, JMU, etc.
Yep. The elite and near elite schools are "offering" 75 or 100 players now in a much larger footprint. Yet as wide a net as an OSU is casting, for the most part, the vast majority of its 2014 class was from their traditional footprint...Ohio, PA, MI, Ill, IN, KY.
Only one was from VA. If VT is bumping heads with OSU, it's in OSU's footprint as much as in VT's.
DeBerry spoke with Scout.com's Michael Clark about his Top 8: http://recruiting.scout.com/2/1429589.html ($). This is what he said about Virginia Tech.
Sweat, Dalton, DeBerry, and Hill would be a scary group...
Please college football gods, let this happen.
Hell, I'll take just 2, fuck it, probably even 1.
We already have one, Hill
If I had a dollar for every time I heard "X, Y, and Z would be a [superlative] recruiting class", I'd have enough money to pay off my therapist to talk me down every time X, Y & Z have snubbed us.
It starts off all like
And then all these big targets that had us high on their lists, or worse, were leaning our way, find another home and I'm like
and then like
Ok. It's not that bad -- I don't wear a veil at least. I'm a manly man, taking care of my disappointments the way manly men ever have.
I love that you guys get excited about recruiting news -- but my liver just can't take it anymore.
Well, we keep making the cut. Slim chance we get him but he seems to really like SB and Foster. And, it's recruiting so you really never know where a kids head/heart is.
it would be great to keep the top talents from va in-state.
We need to start getting these Richmond area kids, think about the highly ranked recruits we've lost recently from Richmond. I know we lose a good amount from 757, but I just feel like we should do better in Richmond than we do.
1. Curtis Grant- OSU 2012
2. Derrick Green- Michigan 2013
3. Garret Taylor-Michigan 2015
4. Clelin Ferrel-Clemson 2015
5. Alec Eberle-FSU 2014
6. Doug Randolph-Notre Dame 2013
7. Tim Harris-UVA 2013
8. Quinton Spain-Wvu-2010
They landed Fisher, Reavis, Reid, and Minor from the Richmond area.
I didnt try and list every recruit I could that we landed, but if you'll notice most of the recruits I mentioned were of a "ELITE" Ranking. Curtis Grant, Derrick Green were both listed as #1 at the position and in the top 5 overall. Im just saying we need a stronger presence in Richmond. With Virginia being as bad as they are we should Dominate this state in recruiting the same way Penn St does with recruits in PA.
I also think Penn St. will slowly begin to recruit a lot of the same guys we do now that they have Franklin.
And they will both be regarded as flops when it's all said and done. Losing a few of those guys really did hurt though.
Deberry would make a great LB and thats what he wants to play at the next level. Lets hope the hokies are recruiting him mainly as an LB instead of DE.
We are recruiting him as an End. The interview that Alex had with him he said he didn't care that he just wanted to rush the passer.
Edit: It was Joe not Alex: http://www.thekeyplay.com/content/2014/march/3/talking-recruitment-ricky...
DeBerry has left St. Christopher's and enrolled at Atlee for his Senior year.

Any idea on this impacts our chances with him?
Apparently Atlee's DC is not a big fan of VT.
Hmmm interesting. Any idea why? Is he a UVA alum by chance?
Richard McFee, former Huguenot head coach. Not VT friendly but his influence is greatly diminished these days.
What a douche. Our D is stout year in and year out. Must have some preconceived pro-LOLUVA/anti-VT bias for some brain dead reason.
yeah he really needs to clean himself..SARCASTICA
McFee is notorious for steering kids away from VT
And UVA, for that matter. He LOVED Paterno and Joe returned the favor by letting McFee's son come to school there and join the football team as a kicker.
St. Chris has the reputation of being for the "good old boys", preppy, uber-rich...also the prep league doesn't have a good reputation for football (despite the fact that Russell Wilson went to Collegiate)...sounds like he got tired of going to school with rich kids and wanted to play againist better competition his senior year
The word I got from a St Chris coach this summer was he was leaving for academic reasons. Playing at Atlee and competing with 5A schools will be quite different than what he has faced in the VA Prep League. We'll see if he can earn those stars. Hopefully it will be a good move for him.
I don't know if that's the case or not. St Chris commonly makes academic "exceptions" to exceptional atheletes (Austin Wates was a noticable example) so I would take that coach's opinion w/ a grain of salt.
No doubt- and grapes can be sour.
My high school (Freeman) has rebounded somewhat in football recently, but lost to Atlee in the playoffs last year.
High school coaches influence has greatly decreased in the past couple years from what I've seen. Not saying there isn't kids who still rely on hs coaches but seems they don't have a lot persuasion especially when the kid only plays at the school for a year.
