Virginia Tech's dining hall has been voted as the best campus food. For all student athletes trying to get bigger and stronger, the Virginia Tech Hokies is the place to be. I certainly hope that Josh Sweat , Deberry, Dalton are listening in their quest to get bigger while maintaining their top speed.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again; VT should always have an unfair recruiting advantage because of this.

I worked in the dishroom just for the free food. We would get all the stuff at the end of the day to 'throw away'. It was a grand time indeed.
I've always been curious as to how exactly VT wins the best dining hall awards, just because each dining hall was so different. I know that West End plays a huge part...but that semester where I ended up there for lunch most days killed my dining account.
Now, Hokie Grill with the Chick-fil-a/Pizza Hut combo......I still miss being able to get cheese sticks with my chicken sandwich.
And whoever ranks them obviously never went to Shultz on a regular basis...
Shultz is equivalent to most school's best dinning hall. This is why we are #1.
Shultz has been a replaced by Turner Place, which is better than West End. The southern style grill they have is phenomenal, plus the biggest Qdoba in the country
But Shultz was so much more than a dining hall...it was a learning and cultural experience.
No, that was Dietrick Hall. It was a learning experience alright. You got to quickly learn what you had for breakfast that morning about 20 minutes after you ate there.
Oh the good ole D2 dash, as far as Shultz (spelling?) goes, I heard they are completely revamping it and making it worth going to!
If by going to concerts you mean? They gutted the building and turned it into a giant performing arts center the past 2 years, actually really nice now.
Turner Place, the new one (I actually worked there my last year as a senior) Is next to Randolph hall on Turner st (hence the name)!

Trust me, four years living next door to Shultz, and it was the worst. Dietrick at least had some options.
Dietrich Dash. At least I lived in Slusher Wing. Easy access to a bathroom after eating.
Living in Miles myself. Had I not already found the glory of Owens & West End, I would have been track team material by the end of my freshman year with the distance between Dietrich and Miles
I'm not certain that bacterial cultures are what that particular side of campus was hoping for...
All joking aside, I do have great memories of counting bricks while being braced up for some infraction, legitimate or imaginary.
exactly. You didn't go to shultz for the food, you went there because you had to. And you liked it. Or at least you liked the fact that you knew about someplace no one else on campus knew about. Also, mini-shultz breakfast buffet, mmmmmm.
Shultz breakfast was the best. I always went there after my morning class. More of a quantity thing than a quality thing, but it was good enough to make it so worth it. Also, Shultz chili challenge was so good because the cook liked to make it extra spicy for the cadets.

West End alone pushes us over the top of any other dining facility out there.
Still couldn't believe I could eat lobster on my dining plan when I was a student.
And with Turner Place and the Gourmet Burger bar, it really isn't fair.
The options...ohhhh the options. The flex plan is probably the most awesome dining plan ever. I'm not sure how it's changed since I left, but when I was there, it was something like 960 bucks, for 350 flex dollars, with discounted tax free rates, PLUS you could add onto it DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR, and keep the same discounted tax free rates for food.
Plus, it was accepted at any food place on Campus, including the food court in the Student Center, and the food/coffee in the graduate center.
I've never seen anything like it on any other campus I've visited.
It really made me wonder what possessed people to buy the X-meals-per-week plan.
I got the 10 meals a week plan. It was cheaper AND you could load as many flex dollars on your account as you wanted and they came through at 1:1 (you get each dollar you add as opposed to regular flex where you only get that once you burn through the initial balance loaded at 1 dollar for every 2.5 you pay). That and having off campus friends pay me to use my flex dollars resulted in a significantly cheaper, yet equally tasty dining experience. System: gamed

Wasn't available when I was there either. You could add Dining Dollars, yeah, but not Flex dollars.
Yep, I actually did that plan for a year (it was cheap) - 15 meals/week, $50 flex per semester, 1:1 on Dining Dollars after the flex ran out. It worked OK for one year, but I bailed on that and did major flex for the remainder of my time.
I was only able to get it my freshman year ('03-'04). It was definitely flex you could add. Got the 50% "discount" and everything. Also, living in thomas made it a much simpler plan to have since I was eating at shultz most of the time anyway.
Ahh, that's when I was living off campus, so I was only worried about the off campus flex plan, which was much cheaper, with the same benefits.
Those sound like Dining Dollars to me. Was your food half price when they rang it up?
The flex plan wasn't available when I went to tech? That is why I got the X-meals plan.

Damn kids. Back in my day, we only had Dietrick and we liked it! We had to walk through a foot of snow to get there and when you did the Dietrick Dash it was uphill both ways.

It happens most years. IIRC, we usually duke it out with some tiny culinary institute in New York. Which, I mean, c'mon.

Hopefully it'll help fall recruiting - as far as I know, recruits visiting in the summer can't see how awesome the food is because nothing but D2 (and maybe ABP) is open. Get recruits to a home game and then to west end in the same weekend - then we can work that advantage

Owens is still a thing? That was the go-to dining hall when I was there. Not because of the food, because of the location (right beside Vawter). The food must be light-years better than when I was there. I have fond memories of a couple of my dorm hall mates trying to get the black jello (yeah, black jello....we had no idea what flavor it was....don't think it was grape...if you sliced off a thin piece, it was grey colored....and there was no way anybody was actually tasting it) stuck in the ceiling grates. I worked in Owens one semester. The smell of peanut butter stained silverware and the detergent they used still haunts my olfactory senses.
Owens was actually my favorite choice. I left the year before Turner opened up though. I loved West End of course (lived in Cochrane sophomore year, gained weight, etc.) but the blue plate, phillies, and "mexican" places at Owens were so good.
owens is still a thing. Decent food, but starting to compete with D2 for worst dining hall on campus. Which is actually impressive since D2 is an improvement over the old Dietrick/Shultz standard of old. If you visit owens though, be prepared: they redecorated a while back and it looks like a three year old on ate a box of crayons, threw it up, then his mom drew inspiration from the mess for the color scheme...
i agree with all of that. My friends keep wanting to go to Owens and I don't get it
I generally went to Owens when I wanted a cheesesteak or General Tso's Chicken. Which was very often. Anything else and I was at Grill or West End.
YES! Cheesesteak from Owens and you got to eat mozzarella sticks while waiting in line.
The Chinese at Owens was much better when you could make your own stir-fry. When they removed that, it went downhill. Although the line on Chicken Parm days was as long as any West End line a couple years back.
Turner and West end are great no question there, but Blue Ridge BBQ has a special place in my heart.

Am I the only one who loved the sandwiches from Owens? The particular kiosk they came from might have been called "Frank's Place" or something like that.
That sandwich with chicken, roasted red peppers, and the pesto sauce. man that was a good sandwich; hard to eat though.
YES! It was so messy! But so good!
There was also one with turkey, ham, bacon, and like a chipotle mayo. Those two were my go-to sandwiches.

I loved the sandwich/wrap place at West End. Hokie Club, Caesar Wrap, and that steak sandwich they made. At Owens, it was usually a cheesesteak, pasts with meat sauce, and almost always a smoothie
I lived in Vawter - '93-'96. Owens was good, but expensive. Hokie Bar and Grill (same building as Owens, just other side) had not brought in the chain restaurants and had the greasiest burgers ever. I used to get a Jolt Cola and one of their bacon cheesburgers and fries. Their personal pizza's were good too though.
Breakfast at Shultz or Dietrick was always good, all you could eat bacon usually. Beyond that, the only thing edible regularly at Shultz on my pallete was the spaghetti. Dietrick...not much at all. They'd occasionally have the chicken strips/nuggest, but it was rare.
We'd go to Owens or Hokie Bar and Grill and load up on sides/drinks using our meal plans, then order Gumby's a lot. Mix the drinks with whatever liquor we'd managed to get our hands on (was under 21 at the time) and chowdown. I miss Gumby's and pokey stix. And if I ever have the cash to do it, I'm going to invest in opening a Macado's in the Mall of Georgia area here where I'm living now. A Macado's would make gazillions there.
OK, I want to start a debate here...
Pasta from West End or pasta from Owens?
I vote enthusiastically for the former, my wife votes adamantly for the latter.
OWENS!! you get it with the alfredo sauce and it is almost as Untouchable as KJ and Lee!

West End easily. Owens pasta gave me issues twice and I've been biased since. Plus when you live in Cochrane and want something quick to take to your room, West End pasta is really tough to beat. That or Hokie Planks. mmmmmmm.
West End hands down. Quality and quantity for the price are leagues above Owens.
