I found this bit interesting in my twitter feed this morning:
New #Hokies QB Michael Brewer spoke to assembled VT media for first time just now. Came off as very polished, determined.— Hokies Journal (@HokiesJournal) August 6, 2014
Interesting that #Hokies transfer QB Michael Brewer said it was Clemson OC Chad Morris, his high school coach, who connected him with Tech.— Mike Barber (@RTD_MikeBarber) August 6, 2014
Brewer said Chad Morris connected him w/ the #Hokies during the transfer recruiting process. Also had an opportunity to play at Clemson.— Hokies Journal (@HokiesJournal) August 6, 2014
Brewer, who starred for Clemson OC Chad Morris in Texas during HS: "Looking back, there's no way I thought I'd be here right now." #Hokies— Hokies Journal (@HokiesJournal) August 6, 2014
Morris talked in Jan. w/ #Hokies RBs coach/assoc. HC Shane Beamer at Senior Bowl in Alabama. Morris mentioned Brewer's desire to transfer— Norm Wood (@normwood) August 6, 2014
Brewer said soon after he was getting to know #Hokies OC Scot Loeffler.— Norm Wood (@normwood) August 6, 2014
There's no question the draw of Virginia's hunting/fishing opportunities had an influence on Brewer's recruitment. #Hokies— Norm Wood (@normwood) August 6, 2014
Brewer's a big outdoorsman. Joked with media that he could be a dual-sport athlete like Jameis Winston -- football and bass fishing. #Hokies— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) August 6, 2014

Comments
That's...odd. I guess since we're not facing Clemson this year or next he felt it would be ok to suggest us as a school he could succeed at, but I'm interested to know if this is more of a unique case or if schools give each other a heads up about transfers.
I believe I have read in a couple places that Chad Morris has major respect for VT so I am not too surprised
The better it is for the ACC as a whole, the better it is for Clemson.
Didn't Chad Morris once call VT his "dream job" or am I making that up? Can't dig up the source, but I swear I read that somewhere...
Also, when he said it was he just paying lip service or was he being honest?
What coach doesn't have VT as their dream job?
The Mike Londons? The Al Grohs? The really, really shady coaches?
Because he want's the HC job once Beamer is gone.

Hmm....
I'm game.
Only if we offer the job to Bud first, he turns it down and is given a massive payraise to stay on as the DC
Chad Morris and Bud Foster on the same staff in Blacksburg?

How wonderful would that be?
If I had to guess, it's based on their prior personal relationship since Morris was his coach in HS. I would imagine Morris wants him to succeed and he knew he would have a chance to do so and play right away with us.
Why wouldn't Morris want Brewer at Clemson though? Aren't they kind of in the same boat as the Hokies right now at QB1?
They recently signed the #1 dual threat QB (he'll be a true freshman this year, my clemson friends expect him to be the starter by midseason, mostly b/c they're not confident in their other options, but I digress). I think Morris said to him "There's probably a spot for you on the Clemson football team, but consider VT, it might be a better situation for you." Pure speculation, but just my guess.
5 * QB Deshaun Watson says hello from Clemson, SC.. and also Morris has a good relationship with hokies coaches too. Wants to see Brewer succeed at VT
Yea, that's what I thought. Especially after the tweet saying "He had a chance to play at Clemson too". They brought in Deshaun Watson who is highly rated but I think most coaches would ideally want to redshirt freshman. That leaves Cole Stoudt the senior who waited behind Boyd but I would have thought they want at least another guy competing. Maybe Clemson is fairly confident in Watson or Stoudt starting so didn't purse Brewer that hard.
As for people saying why Morris would recommend Brewer to an ACC team, I think personal relationships is key here. As we all know Morris was Brewer's OC in HS. For most coaches, I would think helping someone you personally know succeed > possibly facing him later. Plus like people above me have said, it doesn't hurt that we will only play them if we both make it to the ACCCG and that Morris seems to trust and respect VT.
They had one in Chad Kelly. But he got kicked off the team for being a tool.
True. Forgot about $wag Kelly for a second. I don't remember the timeline though. Did he get kicked off after Brewer had already committed to VT?
I believe Kelly got the boot after the Clemson spring game, so yes, it was after Brewer had announced his intentions to come to VT. However I think Brewer wasn't technically "committed" to VT until he enrolled which was June or something.
I think you meant being the One True Swag.
Tomayto, tomahto.
I'd say not unique. For all the hate spewed around by fan bases (I mean, c'mon, who doesn't hate Clemson here?), the coaches are all pretty much in one big fraternity. They all know how challenging the job is and they all respect each other, especially the good ones. Morris knew that Brewer would have a chance to play for a very good coach and an excellent QB coach in Blacksburg, and probably saw that he'd be a better fit at VT than he would at Clemson. THAT, my friends, is how the coaching industry is supposed to function (and how it does, for the most part).
A very good example of networking.
You cannot know everyone and when you are a good person and valuable asset, others put their asset of the people they know and trust, to work for you, just as you should do for those you know and trust.
The world gets much smaller when you are a good and trustworthy person.
short recap - fine example of the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon.
Networking + Branding = Millennial's Dream
Thanks to Morris. But Klempsun still sucks a camel's sandy nut sack. That is all.
Very descriptive imagery
I'm sorry I'm still pissed from 2011. Plus I've fam that went there. I think the ACCCG pissed me off more than the regular season one.
1) I go to Clemson and grew up in upstate SC, losing to Clemson is the worst.
2) the ACCCG was definitely worse, we backslid, played out of character, looked out of sorts. That was a very painful game to watch, especially from the stands.
Don't even get me or anyone else started. That whole game was just a giant WTF!
If I remember correctly, Jayron Hosely went down with an injury pretty early on and then Clemson just started attacking the secondary and we didn't have the talent to stop it.
Tell me something...DO YOU LIKE PEANUTS??
I wouldn't say we did not have the talent to stop them. Boyd, Watkins, and company were an explosive offense as it was. Losing as all ACC corner in Hosely hurt, and we had to throw some guys in there before they were really ready. We know Kyshoen Jarret has a considerable amount of talent, but he had to play more in that game on defense than he did the entire season. Short on talent, no. Short on experience and readiness, yes.
Yeah, "talent" is probably the incorrect term to use. But they did pick on Bonner and Cris Hill quite a bit during the game.
Yep. Bonner was thrown into the lions den as a r-frosh CB against Watkins and Hopkins.
IIRC, he did step up and play pretty well against Michigan in the Sugar Bowl, but Michigan wasn't nearly as athletic on the outside as Clemson.
Meh, Clemson's my second favorite ACC team. And IMO their offense is one of the most exciting to watch. And their fans know how to tailgate.
you get a leg for this. For some reason I can't...stop...laughing.
Perfect GIF selection isn't easy. He nailed it. Legs deserved.
Two bass fishing natty championships, brewer going to help us bring home #3? :)
DYNASTY!
Can I just say as a real quick side note that I have always admired and respected your avi? It has brought mine eyes pleasure many a day.
Maybe he'll bring a football national championship and a bass fishing national championship #allthenattys
Edit: can anyone think of an athlete that won national championships in 2 different sports? I'd imagine there's been some football players win individual track championships. What about football/basketball/baseball?
Probably someone from the black-and-white days. I can't think of anyone recent.
The "black-and-white days"...with all of those annoying flapper people, zoot suits and bathtub gin.
Anything Simpsons related gets a leg from me.
I strangely have the sudden urge to go bowling...
And facemasks not existing.
This is an interesting question. After some brief internet searching, I can't find anyone who's ever done it at the college level, but it's happened a handful of times in the pros. Or in some cases, guys won NCAA championships in one sport and professional championships in another sport.
Jonathan Ogden was an NCAA shot put champ and won a Super Bowl with the Ravens.
Bob Hayes won multiple gold medals in track at the 1964 Olympics and won a Super Bowl with the Cowboys.
Jackie Robinson was a NCAA long jump champ and won a World Series.
Gene Conley won a World Series with the (Milwaukee) Braves and three NBA championships with the Celtics.
Jim Thorpe and Otto Graham also won medals/championships in multiple sports.
Dick Groat was the Helms National Basketball Player of the Year in 1951 (as a Jr. - he was 2 time All American at Duke) and was the National League MVP in 1960 with the World Series champs Pittsburgh Pirates. Jim Brown was a 1st team All American in both football and lacrosse in 1957. Unfortunately, he never did pan out to be much of a pro player in lacrosse but did OK in the NFL.
What a name.. Dick Groat!
Jack Arute

You guys seem to be forgetting someone
I didn't forget him, Bo is probably my favorite athlete of all time, but he didn't win any championships in college or in the pros. There are a number of other notable two-sport athletes that don't meet the criteria here.
Bo is the only ever 2 major sport All-Star. I realize the original comment was regarding guys who won a championship, but I would have to think that a guy who wins the Heisman and is a 2-time All-American in college, number 1 draft pick, and then succeeds in another sport as well at least deserves an honorable mention.
This is who I immediately thought of. Though the year Auburn finished ranked 1st in a few polls (1983, a year which Miami is credited with winning the MNC), they were pretty abysmal at baseball (something like 18-34).
"he could be a dual-sport athlete like Jameis Winston -- football and bass fishing."
Does any other University have that dual sport combnation athlete? I. Don't. Think. So. Awesome!
Well, know one can deny Chad Morris' offensive credentials. Between that, his time at Texas Tech, and with Scot Loeffler, he could really do some damage to opponents (under the assumption he is QB1).
Like Jameis Winston, Michael Brewer should also want to be an ACC and national champion. That would be nice.
Possibility to win more titles with bass fishing than football?
*slaps self*
Here's most of the interview. He definitely talks the part.
Wow, that dude oozes confidence. Hope he is our QB this year, he certainly talks the talk.
"Oozes Confidence":
1. Got his degree in 3 years while dealing with football, injuries, surgery, etc.
2. Outdoorsman. What hunter does not ooze confidence from experiences in the field?
3. Relationships with good coaches across the Southeast developed since high school.
Check, check, check. Yep, the guy's a leader and has an embedded leader mentality. This is gonna be interesting...
anyone?? lol
What a great interview. Definitely talks the part and super jazzed to see him out on the field! Thanks so much for posting the interview.
i feel like this should be posted as its own induvidual thread so no one misses it. i may read every comment but some folks do not have time at work like i myself to spend hours and hours browsing TPK through all the comments for that 1 that we all really need to see. im impressed with the kid. im secretly routing for motley to win the job not sure why but then again i was always an ike whitaker and ju-ju clayton fan lol. (after ju-jus 80yrd TD to marcus davis in the BC game i was sold) but seriously make sure everyone gets a glimpse of this interview! send it to the top!!!!!
Since he was dubbed Vanilla Vick does anyone have video of him scrambling/running/flipping over dudes in the endzone?
That's disappointing, no video ;) How ya been x3?
Well, that is quite the title to live up to, I don't play him for not liking it.
I got one. ACC POY
How about:
Smooth Hoperator?
Barley Pop?
Brew Thru?
Leg for Brew Thru
That was my favorite. You know "threw"..."thru".
I forgot all about the Brew Thru. Down in Avon they had a Breeze Thru and I think there was a Brew Thru in Buxton. The locals burnt down the Brew Thru so the locally owned Breeze Thru was the only option.
They are awesome! God I miss that place.
I had the opportunity and frequented the Brew Thru at about the 16 mile post about 2 weeks ago.
I frequented the Brew Thru in Buxton back in 1978. Post surfing brew break while camping at Frisco Woods campground. Surfed many hurricane swells there. Memories!!
See before I dub him Vanilla Vick, he's going to have to win an ACCCG and a BCS or playoff game in order for me to get on board with that. Once he does I'm in. But for now I'll just stick with something like "The Brew" "Brew" or "The Brew Wrangler" based off of his penchant for fishing.
I really like this guy. He sounds the part, and based on his limited film he looks the part. We'll have him next year or no?
Immediately eligible to play because he finished a degree at TT.
Yeah, I knew he could play this year. ohhero answered my Q below though.
Ah, sorry - read the original question wrong.
He is transferring as a redshirt Jr., so he has 2 years of eligibility left.
Yes, he has 2 years eligibility left. Another reason that his transfer here made sense for him and us.
Our beat writers let us down:
You tell 'em, Dawson.
definitely a leg for a DC reference.
I kind of like calling him Texas, it's a simple kind of cool. I can get on board with that.
Any pics of him under center at fall practices yet?
Google image search is yielding no results.
on hokiesports.com they have him handing off... incorrectly (per coach lefty) lol i dont remember if he is under center for it or not though
I feel like such an idiot, but judging from the comments on this thread, I'm the only one who didn't realize Crabbing was a sport at FSU.
Bwahahahahahahaha!!! All Time Post! I am ashamed I have but one leg to give for this. That is hilarious and awesome!!!
David Teel caught up with Chad Morris and talked about how Brewer ended up in Blacksburg
Excerpt below:
After Clemsons practice Thursday night, I spoke to Morris, who raved about Brewers instincts, football IQ and bloodlines. He described how Brewer and his family, unhappy with Brewers situation after three years and the Tommy Tuberville-to-Kliff Kingsbury coaching transition at Texas Tech, approached him for advice and why he recommended Virginia Tech, where Brewer transferred this spring and is expected to emerge as the starter.
He thought enough of me, and his family did, to give me a call, Morris said. I obviously started thinking: What are the right fits? Who needs a quarterback? Obviously, that comes into account. I thought of us first. But we didnt need one. We didnt have a spot. If wed had a spot, hed be at Clemson.
Morris bumped into Hokies running backs coach Shane Beamer at the Senior Bowl in January and casually mentioned Brewer.
Playing for Frank Beamer, and I shared this with (Michael), he is a legend in college football, Morris said. They were kind of quarterback deficient. They didnt have as many quarterbacks, theyre losing a good guy (Logan Thomas) in the fourth round (of the NFL draft), and, couple that with the opportunity to play for a legend like Coach Beamer, wow. What a role model.
So I called Shane (after the Senior Bowl) and said, Shane this may sound weird, may sound strange. I know were opponents, in the same conference and everything, but look, Ive got a guy that I would put my name on. Yall dont know me very well, but Im just tellin you that if yall are looking for a quarterback, this is a guy that would be, if we had a spot, hed be at Clemson.
Edit: I'm not sure why the apostrophes and quotes are being stripped out.
Hell yeah Morris. Class.
Ok, ok. Morris class. But Dabo and Kempson still trash.
Morris would be a great candidate for our head coach when Frank retires. Of course, he will likely be gone by then to another HC job.
Sure, if Bud Foster doesn't want it.
