Can William & Mary really challenge VT on August 30th?

According to many sport analysts, William & Mary will test the Hokies young offense and keep the game close. I know that Ohio State is the marquee game on the early schedule, but, lets hope the coaching staff is not overlooking the Tribe.

I can't stop watching this. Seriously its like the wood chopping ones... I want one as a pet so I can watch it do the same thing run by and then swim back over top of the camera and run back by.

Judging from the last few years, a paper bag would pose a challenge for our offense, so I'm not going to go out and say we're going to breeze through this game.

We should win comfortably, but stranger things have happened

As a person who's favorite FCS team is W&M and have watched them for a while I have to say they always play FBS teams tough then for some reason struggle against FCS teams. They almost beat Maryland, UNC, and West Virginia all in the past three years and beat UVA. That being said I just think they will be completely overwhelmed on offense and will struggle to score at all. I see a 40-3 type win for Tech.

I feel like there are more jokes here than fans at UVA's spring game.

Silly me. I should've acknowledged the fact that they avoided the upset against the Hoos.

Everyone saying no, that's exactly what Michigan said against app state and we said against jmu. Don't count your chickens yet.

I think we'll win, but as I have learned, nothing is guaranteed.

VT 2016
Go Hokies

Anything can happen. The good news is that, since this is the first game of the year, I don't see our players sleepwalking through this one. They're excited to go out and play football. That said, I'll be pleasantly surprised if our offense drops 40+ on W&M. Happily, as David Teel said during the spring, nothing they do offensively is gonna make Bud lose any sleep at night. My prediction: the Hokies win one that's a little more ugly than we'd all like and people start calling for Lefty's head again.

Not to mention the fact that we'll likely go as vanilla as possible on offense in hopes of not showing anything before the Ohio State game

I think it's interesting when people see scores like 40+ and say "I don't think the offense will drop 40 points on them." Well, I don't think the offense does, either. But, we have defense and special teams, too, that can score some points. I'd say with a team like W&M, our D will be eager get some defensive points up on the board.

I see our special teams ready to get some points on the board after being pretty much embarrassed last year.

If the players can go out there, ready to play, and ready to prove themselves, this game will see second string players in the second half.

this is what W&M will be seeing a lot of

Is Kyle Fuller taking a break from punking Bennett to strap it up for the O&M again?

The Dude Abides

I would. Sounds like a pretty solid move to me.

I will say that yes, there's a reason I mentioned the offense specifically dropping less than 40. With W&M having pretty much our QB situation, but with less talent, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a member of DBlock start his season out with a pick-six. We could also see Frank bring the house and get to a punt or FG as well. The point is, both teams will be going strength-on-weakness (defense-offense) on every down.

I'm not confident any of our QBs can throw the ball close enough to Kendall Fuller for Kendall to pick it off. Last year W&M didn't throw many picks partly due to scheme and partly due to complete and total inaccuracy of the three-headed QB Hydra.

Ah, the good old "they can't pick it off if we don't throw it near anybody" trick. No one ever sees it coming.

5 INT in almost 300 attempts is a really good ratio. Completing 53% of 300 passes is, um, not good.

Yes they can.

I don't say this because of anything related to schemes, styles, or experience. I say this because of Appalachian State University, James Madison University, Portland State University, and Georgia Southern.

We should beat them, yeah, probably by a lot. But never overlook anyone.

It will probably be a 3-0 lead at halftime for Tech... then we end up winning like 24-7... First game with a new, untested QB at center, big time game looming the next week, it will probably be a close game....

VT 12'... Exit light, Enter night.

Hmmmm

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

I agree 100%. We will also use all of our first half timeouts in the first quarter because of a lack of communication/understanding from the sidelines to the hashmarks.

Furman held us to 7-0 at the half awhile back and that was a good year. That's "Frank's system" I suppose.

If it is 3-0 at half time, there's no way in hell I'm even going to remember the second half

New QB comes in with something to prove. WR want to live down drops from last year. CB want to start the year right.

My prediction is VT 14, W&M 0...

VT drive of the game.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Point about the 'new QB'-
I'd think whoever gets the start will have to sit some second half to get some reps for QB #2.

My prediction is, overwhelming Hokie win, starting with a kick/punt return (depending on who gets the ball first) for a TD.

I may be an optimist, but dammit, I'm tired of seeing all the negativity passed off as realism.

My desires for this game are the following:

Two rushing td's in the first half.
Two passing td's in the first half.
1 more passing and rushing td's in the second half by the second and third teams. (so 42 points from offense).
I want at least 10 points from the special teams (one return and a damn field goal)
At least 7 points from the defense either fumble return or a pick 6. So 59+ total points scored.

From Bud's defense, I want them held at 10 or less.

So 59+ to 10 would make me a happy camper.

I want the defense to hold them on their side of the field the entire game. Get their punters punting avg going...minus the one punt we block.http://www.cleanenergyinsight.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/punt_block.jpg

Offense will be rusty and/or make us all want to pull our hair out, but defense & athleticism will result in the Hokies winning going away... 38-7 or the like.

NEIN , Nooooooo! But sometimes strange things happen & we do have a tendency to play down to the competition and give games away.

georgebd

So you are hedging your bets by taking both sides? Be careful to guard your junk as you straddle that fence.

The Dude Abides

Not hedging , have seen losses by giveaway to Temple, JMU, Maryland, Duke,ECU, Boise & Cincinnati.I take no team for granted , this will be a tough game & closer than most think. Coaches & team seem to play to level of competition. The question was "can W&M win", the answer is "YES",if we make mistakes& give the game away. Not pessemetic not hedging just being realistic.

georgebd

I was at most of those games; so I know what you mean by VT letting teams hang-around (even when they shouldn't) and giving games away. I was just ribbing you about how you led with an emphatic "NO", then started to slide into a 'Maybe". Good natured jab only.

In my opinion, Boise (at the time) was not in the class with the other teams mentioned. I think their QB ended up with the most wins in D1 history, so the Broncos were in a good groove when we faced them. Spotting them 10 points in the first 5 minutes doesn't help either.

The Dude Abides

Agree, all is well!

georgebd

Can they? Sure, anything can happen. I know Frank has made a number of public statements indicating that he is not overlooking W&M and is making sure the players don't, either. W&M has hung tough with FBS schools before, there's no reason to think they can't do it again.

Now the real question - will they challenge us? I could see a slow start for us, just in terms of having new plays (and new players) in a real game setting. I expect the D to maul W&M, and I think the O will find a groove after a drive or two. My gut says special teams makes a play to give us some momentum - I'm feeling a punt return TD.

47-10 Hokies. W&M scores a garbage TD against our third string D.

"Exit light..."

Beamer could have the equivalent of the FBS Seattle Seahawks, and he's not going to to destroy W&M. He's buddies with their staff.

In a perfect game, once the Hokies have a 4 or 5 TD lead, you'll see the other qbs on the field, and I actually might be playing OLB if they get my jersey ordered on time.

Leonard. Duh.

I have a dream:
All three of Techs QBs see some playing time against W&M. The starting QB takes a break after going 35-0, the backup takes a break at 49-0, and Mark Leal finishes the game 56-14 after throwing two INT and a rushing TD.

You mean all 7, right?

He was just counting the TEs.

___

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

I was laying in bed last night and i drifted off to sleep and I had a dream that we where beating William & Mary 14-3 but I woke up kind of sad ,but I cheered up when I realized that it was only a dream, because I know we'll beat William & Mary by way more than that.

“These people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

W&M's defense should be pretty solid- they return most of the important guys from a defense that did work and usually had to support an inept offense that couldn't throw to save its life. However our QB situation is a mess. Raphael Ortiz was presumed to be the guy but he retired earlier this week after never recovering from shoulder surgery. The one guy on the roster with any experience has thrown a grand total of nine passes. The redshirt freshman people seem to love hurt his ankle in the spring and is apparently still hurt. Kevin Rogers is prominently involved in deciding who will be the next QB.

I recommend anyone at the game drink heavily because the football will be ugly on both sides.

I honestly think we will go out with a gameplan that's not all that Vanilla but not all that nice either. I'm sure Lefty will keep some packages in his pocket for next week but lets be honest guys its not going to be sprinkles and vanilla. Based on French's review we know Ohio State's 8 plays and should be able to stop them, however its easier said than done.

IMO Lefty and co will want to throw a couple left hooks and right hooks, get the running game going and passing game and then go from there. If we can go into the OSU game with confidence knowing that we can score/make proper reads/throws we will do great. I'm not one to soften up the playbook because it doesn't help. Maybe Lefty and co can see some adjustments that need to be made for OSU in this game, it will be a teaching/game study for us if anything.

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

The biggest thing I remember from the last time we played W&M was that when every other game in our time slot was over, we were still in the 3rd quarter. It was just incomplete pass after incomplete pass, we were yelling from the north end zone "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD JUST RUN THE BALL"

We should play for blood in the first qtr...but we won't. I have been a faithful fan for 23 years and I know frank will keep it conservative and let the defense win it. I predict 17-7 VT. This will be painful to watch but I still think we show well game 2.

I do not want to hear those words from Beamer... What would happen if we end up losing to Bill and Mary.. would it come down to Frank not getting us ready or what???

All I'm trying to say is that nothing is ever guaranteed. Yes, yes we should beat them, hence my short and long answers.

The coaching staff is not overlooking the Tribe. When Maddy was at the media days talking about beating Ohio State, what was Beamer's response? That he needed to get Luther focusin' in on Weeyum 'n Murry. Frank learned his lesson against JMU.

Was thinking along the lines of your last comment. If "the game that never happened" actually never happened, I'd be more worried. On one hand, the times of not taking opponent x seriously should be over... on the other, the fluke upsets keep happening.
