I keep hearing nothing but amazing things about Brewer... I just hope the bar isn't set too high for the kid because that's what I see happening. So much hype for a kid that has had injury problems and is undersized. As long as he is consistent, above average, and healthy, we should be in good shape though.

VT 12'... Exit light, Enter night.

Russel Wilson, Drew Brees, etc. etc.

Injuries are a concern, though. At least he's had a lot of rest the last few years.

Wilson, Brees, etc. are the exception to the rule, not the norm, so it's a bit counterproductive to bring those names up in a thread about Brewer if the goal is to avoid additional hype.

Avoid hype? Nah, I'm all about building excitement

I only bring them up to offer a counterpoint to the height question.

I see your point and I tend to agree with you a little (even though, as stated above, they are the outliers). I'm honestly most concerned about injury and not being as good as advertised.

VT 12'... Exit light, Enter night.

I want to believe that he's gonna come in and lead us to some unexpected success, but I just dont know. I also dont know much about everything that happened at Texas Tech, but he never was actually the starter. Like Steve703VT says, he's undersized. Look at the linemen this year, he's gonna be running around the trees a la Tyrod. Plus I'm concerned that it was a back injury that sidelined him at TT. I've had back injuries, sometimes they come back to haunt you.

Then I read about winning 5A titles in Texas and these football bloodlines and I think we might have a special next couple of years on our hands. If he's truly got 'it' with the young talent that we're placing all around him it's an exciting prospect. We're just getting so little actual details from practice so far it's driving me nuts.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

This is a must read. If Morris is right, we have a special player along with three special young players behind him.

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

He thought enough of me, and his family did, to give me a call, Morris said. I obviously started thinking: What are the right fits? Who needs a quarterback? Obviously, that comes into account. I thought of us first. But we didnt need one. We didnt have a spot. If wed had a spot, hed be at Clemson.

Morris bumped into Hokies running backs coach Shane Beamer at the Senior Bowl in January and casually mentioned Brewer.

Playing for Frank Beamer, and I shared this with (Michael), he is a legend in college football, Morris said. They were kind of quarterback deficient. They didnt have as many quarterbacks, theyre losing a good guy (Logan Thomas) in the fourth round (of the NFL draft), and, couple that with the opportunity to play for a legend like Coach Beamer, wow. What a role model.

Wow. My respect level for Morris just went through the roof. This is a guy I would LOVE to have at Virginia Tech someday, be it as a potential OC, or maybe as a potential replacement for Beamer down the line. Hearing him rave about Beamer the way he does, it does make you wonder, if we had Whit in charge a couple years ago if we wouldn't have broken the bank to bring in Morris (or, more intriguing, should Loeffler not work out, after seeing the money pouring into basketball right now, makes you wonder if we wouldn't go after Morris).

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Isn't he one of the highest, if not the highest, assistant coaches in the country? He won an ACC title and set records with Boyd at Clemson. What makes you think he wants to hit the reset button for a slide step over to a team with no offensive identity? For giggles? The guy is building an NFL-ready offense that has the potential to be a pain in VT's ass for years to come. He is not leaving for VT for any reason; that is just wishful thinking.

Also, VT has a new OC, let's let him breath a bit. Not to mention a limited budget. We are not OSU, USC, Bama, or Texas.

The Dude Abides

While yes, what you say is true and he has done a lot of great things at Clemson, with the way he raves about VT and Beamer whenever the opportunity presents itself, it does make you wonder whether or not he would jump at the chance to come work for a person he openly describes as a living legend of the game, assuming the price was right. You just don't hear words like that all the time from coaches around the game, which is why it makes you take notice when you hear these things come from him. He clearly has the highest levels of respect for VT and Coach Beamer, it makes you wonder if there's something more to it.

Now I'm not saying that it 100% would happen, but by no means would I say its out of the realm of possibility. And another thing, you are correct in saying that the Clemson offense has been outstanding under Morris. Nobody is going to argue that. However, their defense has always been what has held them back. He isn't going to auto-reject the opportunity to come work for someone he describes as a living legend, in a premier conference, located in the middle of a recruiting hotbed, in a situation where you're never going to be held back by defensive weakness. In fact, I would almost say it would be a perfect fit for him, especially now with how the Athletic Department is showing a willingness to open the bank to bring us up to the level of everyone else, financially.

He was offered a chance to be Ohio State's OC but the buy out for Morris was pretty big if he had made a lateral move. I only see him moving on to a Head Coach opportunity and I really hope it isn't to uva.

andddd as much as clemson has had a nice little run lets not forget dabo was an interum coach whos been on the hot seat before... i couple tough years and i dont think they would honestly hesitate to much to let him go and then what happens to chad? How many losses to rival USC in a row now and clemson has been ranked higher than them when it happens? i dont know if chad morris would come here but dont be so sure he has the job security of a life time.

Agree that he doesn't come here as OC. He's not leaving clemson to do the same job somewhere else especially with what he's got going on there. Like Bud. Bud isn't going to leave to go be a defensive coordinator someplace else.

However....Dabo is young and won't be leaving Clemson anytime soon....Beamer on the other hand is old and has a few years left. I bet anything his name is on the list of canidates when the job opens up. Especially with Whit running the show now.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

And not only that, but with Whit in charge, if Beamer makes it known he's ready for retirement, and Morris truly is interested in the job and we deem him the best candidate, pull the trigger and bring in Morris as OC and announce him as head coach in waiting, and make that final push to get Beamer his National Championship before he retires with arguably the best OC and DC in the country on his staff. That right there is the kind of scenario I could fully see Whit engaging in the not too distant future.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

But kick Loeffler out just because? What if Loeffler is doing a good job? He's only had one year here so far and in my mind that's not enough to make decisions off of especially with the crew he had last year.

Whit and Frank need to have a conversation before Franks last year as HC. They can then start to look and talk to candidates even if CFB hasn't announced his retirement. But I don't think ousting Loeffler just because is good business unless his performance is warranted.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

At this point, unless Loeffler proves otherwise, he should stay around til there's a change in Head Coach. What I'm saying is that if you can already identify the next HC, and he's able to come over, you encourage Loeffler behind the scenes to take another job (which shouldn't be that difficult if he's good enough to keep around) and then you bring in Morris to replace him with the pretense of being a HCIW hire. Then, once Morris takes over, it allows him to bring in whatever offensive coaching he wants.

By no means am I trying to shove Loeffler out the door, but if you have the opportunity to make the move to secure a really good coach to take over for Beamer when he retires, you almost have to move on it. All of this is pending Beamer telling Whit he has a timetable set on his retirement.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

see above. i dont think dabo is that secure at clemson yeah hes a fire ball and they have been up but being up only raises expectations and if they dont meet them for a couple years i dont think they will wait for him to turn it back around. i know there are three things that will lead to you losing your job quickly.... losing streak against rival.... not playing for the ACC ship and 4 or 5 losses for 3 or 4 years maybe not even that long. look at bobby B (not a fan) but even he got pushed out of tally after those things started happening. i dont think thing #3 happens but the combo of the 1st one USC on a 5 game win streak mighttttt trumph that 3rd one.

I got that but if Clemson keeps performing the way they have been recently, especially with the bowl win over OSU then I doubt they give him the boot. As long as they don't revert to their old ways of sucking with great players then I think he's fine. We'll see though. I think Dabo has more time left at Clemson though than Beamer does at tech.

i think your pretty close with time left between chad and frank. BSC bowl wins will mean alot less now with the playoff in place IMO.

Not necessarily. Those big bowls are always big and have been for decades. We still hold the Sugar Bowl win over Texas very dear... and that was before the BCS existed.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

This is so true; you could say that season and particularly that bowl win announced to the world that VT had arrived as a serious competitor in D-1 Football.

Tee hee hee....

Morris has just gained a TON of respect in my book. This is what college athletics is supposed to be about...what's best for the kid.

We put the K in Kwality

This is probably reading too much into it...which is a specialty of mine, but I just wonder if Chad Morris isn't setting up the dominoes for at least a phone call from Blacksburg when Coach Frank retires.

Leonard. Duh.

I could see that. Really, this is a win-win-win for Morris. He gets to do right by Brewer in steering him into a favorable situation. He has the respect of our coaches for doing it. He has the attention of our administrators now in terms of being a good guy who we already knew was a good coach. Smart play all around, and probably genuinely motivated by trying to do something good for his former player. Getting on the VT radar can never hurt, at least it guarantees him that phone call when the time comes and gives him an option. Now, if VT meets up with Clemson and Brewer leads us to victory, maybe that's the only real "lose" in this scenario for him.

I really enjoyed this story. Truly what collegiate athletics should be about. Thanks to Coach Morris for being a stand-up guy. I still want to get some revenge on Clemson, but I have a new level of respect for Coach Morris.

"Exit light..."

I don't even think it would be a lose for Morris if a Brewer-led VT beats Clemson in the ACC title game (only way we could meet the next couple years), because it'll still look REALLY good on his part to put the kid into the best situation he thought Brewer could be in, at the potential expense of your own gain. Long-term, thats the kind of move that gets you respect across all of the sports world, which will pay dividends down the line.

Big picture, Chad Morris gets it in spades. This guy will be one of the great head coaches of the game when he gets his opportunity, and we would do very well for ourselves to set us up to bring him in when Beamer is ready to go. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Bud Foster and our #1 priority should be keeping him on staff for life, but as far as a replacement for Beamer, you really can't ask for much more than what Morris has shown.

I like how the article points out yet another botched QB recruiting from Mack Brown. At least he didn't view him as a DB a la RGIII, et al.

He just finds a way to win, Morris said. Hes not the biggest, hes not the fastest. hes just got it. Thats whats made him so special. Hes a great teammate. Hes one of those guys. Hes a pick-up drivin, fishin, huntin guy. Thats who he is and thats what he does. He enjoys fishin, huntin and football. He wears his cowboy boots and cowboy hat. Thats what he does. Hes just a rugged kid from Texas.

I agree with Morris, coach Beamer is a legend. All he needs is a national championship. Hopefully Michael Brewer can bring one in his two years as a Hokie! Thanks for being a true professional Morris.

This goes to show how highly regarded Frank is in the world of coaching. He treats and develops his players the right way, and it pays dividends like in this case. Building a program is based on solid coaching relationships, as we saw with Tommy Reamon and Michael Vick

The more pressure this kid has on him, the more he performs.
That is the type of guy we need to lead against the buckeyes as there will be plenty of pressure.

I think what would be nice, too, is that it drives those around him to perform better, too.

Eh, I don't really see the OSU as a high pressure game. We aren't expected to win at all.

Pressure isn't about what everyone else expects from the team, it's about what the team expects from itself. If he wants to win the game, and the team wants to win the game, it's a high pressure game.

Anybody else got a mental image of Scott Bakula in the movie necessary roughness? Second chance! Albeit Bakula's character was way older!

No, but now I have a mental image of Kathy Ireland from Necessary Roughness.

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

Ok, I'm a relative newbie to site. Could someone explain why some comments are in green and some in blue? Or is it my computer? Thanks for any answers.

I'm colorblind, but:
yellow=new unread post
blue=read post
green=post deemed 'most excellent' by fellow TKP'ers so that it has received 10+ turkey legs, or delayed reward for contributors that were unable to be turkey legged at the time of the posted content.

Thanks, Shoog. I'm old and slow but I get there eventually. :-)

not blue... grey

One other one, if you see a blurred out comment, the masses have spoken, and the comment was deemed unworthy to be on this great site, by virtue of being downlegged 10 or more times. (downlegs, per the community guidelines are to be given only for those who are trolling, spamming, or in general making a complete and utter ass out of him/herself. They are not to be given for just disagreeing with an opinion).

Caveat about the green comments. Specifically, a comment is greened one there are 10 more upvotes than downvotes, so when a meter reaches +10, it greens. Now, its possible for a comment to be green and blurred, but I've never seen it.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Is it just me or does anyone else chuckle when they see a blurred comment?

@AMB4VT

I volunteer as tribute for the green, blurred comment test.

It has happened before. Someone posted a really bad GIF, got a bunch of downvotes, then a bunch of people upvoted when he/she had a change of heart, so it stood at +25/-15 or something. Definitely rare, but it has happened.

Ah, I just wanted to see it happen haha.
