Media Day Reveals an Uncertain, Yet Exciting Hokies Offense

Virginia Tech's young offense was at centerstage during the team's media day.

It's been a long time since wide receiver seemed like the most stable position on the Hokies' offense.

Running back, quarterback, even the offensive line have long been the positions where Tech has always seemed its deepest.

But this year, it seems there are more questions than answers at every position on offense other than receiver.

That's not to say that there isn't promise at those positions — far from it, in fact.

Yet the team's annual Media Day was particularly notable for how uncertain (and in some ways exciting) the new players joining the program have made things.

It is impossible to address offensive uncertainty without mentioning the battle at quarterback.

While the competition is still nominally between five different players, including freshmen Chris Durkin and Andrew Ford, it would seem the field is narrowing to just the veterans.

"I think basically it's very difficult for a freshman to step in there, but I like our two freshmen kids a lot," said head coach Frank Beamer. "I just think it's very difficult."

Complicating matters is the fact that spring starter Brenden Motley has been nursing a back injury that forced him to miss a few practices.

"The toughest part is Motley hasn't been able to compete here, his back's been bothering him a little bit," Beamer said.

However, Beamer expects him to return soon and resume competing with Mark Leal and Michael Brewer.

"I think Leal and Brewer are battling right now, but we want to get Motley back in there, we hope to do that Monday," Beamer said. "We hope to make a decision pretty quickly."

Motley says that the injury wasn't a terribly serious one, and he should be back out there soon.

"I feel pretty good. It was just something minor, nothing too serious," Motley said. "I'm about to get back into it real soon so I can play as fast as possible."

Even with Motley missing a few days, Leal feels as if the added competition has brought out the best in the group.

"It's a little bit different feeling. In the spring, we only had three quarterbacks. It was something I'm definitely not used to because we're always deep in that room," Leal said. "Now, with seven quarterbacks, everybody brings something a little different. It just adds a little more fire to the competition, it makes you want to perform every day."

But Beamer made news when he mentioned that the group would be getting smaller by one — incoming freshman Travon McMillian has transitioned to a role as a running back after playing quarterback in high school.

"McMillian, we've moved him to tailback...and the guy's got speed, real speed," Beamer said. "You noticed him. He's going to come along. He's going to be a real speed guy in our backfield."

The move isn't a particularly surprising one given his skill set, considering that McMillian ran for over 1,500 yards and 20 touchdowns in his days at C.D. Hylton High School while passing for just over 1,400 yards, but the backfield is certainly crowded these days.

Trey Edmunds, J.C. Coleman and Joel Caleb are all mostly known quantities, but at this point, the staff has been thrilled with the talent the incoming freshmen have displayed so far.

"We've had some young guys to the mix and I really like them all," said running backs coach Shane Beamer. "You can't play four, you can't play six regularly, and be successful but it really is wide open."

The elder Beamer was particularly complimentary of freshman Shai McKenzie.

"I can tell you we're going to get McKenzie more and more work here, we're looking forward to seeing where that goes," he said.

Shane echoed that sentiment, saying that he seems to be completely healed from the ACL tear he suffered last year.

"At times, I was concerned about him from a running standpoint, but, knock on wood, there haven't been any concerns since we got started," he said. "And mentally, I've been pleasantly surprised. He didn't do anything in the spring except sit in my meetings and just watch, so you worry about how much he's hearing and absorbing, but he's been great. He sits in those meeting, he doesn't say a whole lot, but he's picked things up well."

Marshawn Williams might not be quite as new a sensation, considering he also enrolled early and participated in spring practice with the Hokies, but he's still raising eyebrows.

"He's a guy that can move the pile," Shane said.

However, there are still concerns about his health heading into the year. He just had hernia surgery at the end of July, and seemed to be on a different page than the coaching staff when news came down that he'd be out for three to six weeks.

"In my head, the way things work, I'm ready to go," Williams said. "But now, I have to let this heal and then I'll be right back. I just wasn't ready for it and I acted before I felt right. I have no pain, I just have to wait for it to heal."

That confusion translated to the coaching staff as practice began.

"He's very confident, he told me when it was announced he was going to be out, he told me that day he was ready," Shane said. "I said 'you've got to get on the same page as the training room,' but I'm confident in him."

For now, he's working on his conditioning and on keeping his weight down after Frank mentioned that he's a bit heavier than the team wants him to be.

"Every day I see him out there with (athletic trainer) Mike Goforth in practice. They've probably done a hundred laps every day, just staying in shape," Shane said. "And that's the biggest concern for Marshawn when he comes back is that he's in shape and not 240 pounds."

Shane admitted that he wasn't above a little public humiliation to help him with that goal.

"I made him get up in the running back meeting the other night and I made him write on the board what his weight was that day and what it's going to be in two weeks and he's on a mission to make sure he's at that weight. And I think he'll be ready to roll," he said.

Williams isn't the only spring star to get fans excited for the offense's potential. Tight end Bucky Hodges looked electric at times in the spring, and his size (which is truly imposing in person) has the staff excited about what he can do.

"They've had me at the slot, they've had me a lot of places," Hodges said.

Frank seemed particularly interested in running more multiple tight end sets now that 2012 starter Ryan Malleck is healthy and Hodges is in the fold.

"I think our tight ends can be a real factor. I think we've got three guys there in Malleck and Hodges and (2013 starter Kalvin) Cline," Beamer said. "You can get them inside and block, but they're athletic enough in space that you can get mismatches in matchups, so I think that's a tremendous element that we haven't had a lot of in the past. And all those things help your running game."

But through all the offensive uncertainty, and excitement about the newcomers one thing remains constant about the Hokies — Frank Beamer is excited about his kickers.

He went on at length about the potential of the three freshmen that have joined the competition this fall.

"We've got three exceptional kickers. Joey Slye is booming it. He's been impressive. Same with (Michael) Santamaria, he's a real skilled kicker. He hasn't been quite as consistent the last couple days but he gets height on it, same flight," Beamer said. "And Carson Wise has been as consistent as anyone. Three really, really good kickers. So we've got to make a decision, but the good thing is, it's going to be a hard decision."

Even if this refrain remains the same — all it lacked to be quintessential Frank was a good "they'll get after ya" — this Media Day proved that there's plenty to be excited (and apprehensive) about on this offense.

"We've got some explosive people that you're talking about," Beamer said. "They haven't proven themselves, so you may not know exactly who they are, but in most cases, it's going to be a very talented guy that you're choosing."

Thanks for the thorough updates, Alex

With the pieces in place, I think we just might see the Loeffler Offense's "breakout" game this year. Hopefully, they'll be able to sustain that success once it happens.

It's been a while since I've been this excited for a Hokie's offense. Though I expect growing pains, I feel like we will really begin realizing some of the potential between Loeffler's scheme and the talent we have. I'm already even more excited for next next season!

Re: Marshawn Williams' differing with the coaches about his recovery time - I think it's a matter of a young man having to realize that he's not Wolverine and it takes some time to heal. No worries. I'll be excited when he gets on the field whether it's vs W&M or later on.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

the coaching staff seems excited about the players. now im all pumped up for the season to start.

I believe we pull out a close one 17 to 14 against W&M because our heads won't be in the game. We'll be looking ahead to the Ohio St. game which we will come together as a team to deliver a beat down in Big 10 country 35 to 10

Some people spend their entire life wondering if they made a difference, Marines don't have that problem

Realistically, I think those are reversed. We beat W&M 35-10, then lose in a close game to AnOSU. I'm thinking something like 24-20.

Man I am so pumped right now! I would have liked to see an O linemen and maybe a TE up there instead of all 3 QB's, but it is what it is with the competition. There is a different air of confidence coming from the coaches and players this year. I like it.

It's exciting to think about what the offense could look like and how these freshmen will make an impact. You see these teams make a complete turn around when a couple of impact players are in the mix..

Touchdown Tech - Bill Roth

I think the TE's are what makes this offense go. Their success blocking and getting short yardage passes will open everything else up.

THREE WEEKS TIL FOOTBALL!! YES YES YES YES YES

Hope the coaches are serious (third year is the charm since they've said it often) about paring down the running back rotation to three. Shai probably complicates this, but I understand him to be the most naturally talented RB on the roster right now.

I'd like to see a good competition between McKenzie, Williams and a healthy JC and Trey. When healthy, I think any of those guys could be great.

I think that JC is the odd man out in terms of potential. He has had his time to show his stuff and it hasn't been very impressive. Sure, we can say that there were more problems than him for the running game, but when it comes down to it, a truly talented and great RB will make special plays. He just didn't do that. I expect Shai to be the next great RB at VT. He would have been a 5* RB had he not been injured his senior year. He has talent that will force the coaches to keep him on the field.

I agree on Shai. If I remember correctly he was flirting with the 1000 yd mark when he was injured early last season. His film is nasty.

In two games he rushed rushed for 650 yards and 11 touchdowns on 36 carries. That is 18.5 yards per carry. I don't know if he was playing against top competition, but western Pennsylvania high school football has a reputation for being outstanding.

Thanks for the clarification. Not as close to 1000 as I thought, but 18.5 ypc is unreal vs any competition level.

Yep, and I don't think it was too far into that second game that he got hurt. Amazing numbers.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Which brings me to this... why didn't we recruit his linemen as well?

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Part of me gets excited about the potential of Shai being a co #1 running back this year. I think he has the best skill set of any of the current backs - maybe the best since Ryan Williams.

Then part of me thinks the coaching staff may redshirt him with all of the other current options :-/

Can't be more excited about those TEs. Nothing creates passing efficiency like having big athletic targets streaking down the middle.

Minority Report.

I'm very surprised they put Travon at RB and made the backfield even more crowded...

"Go Hokies!" - Thomas Jefferson
@HaydenDubya

Trey Edmunds is still coming back from injury, Marshawn is currently injured, Shai is coming off an ACL injury, Jerome Wright tweeted about needing to get healthy... I don't know if it's really crowded in the backfield right now. JC and Joel Caleb might be the only RBs w/ no health questions right now. Maybe adding McMillian as a RB is more of a clue to others health but it does same as Shai is doing well now

^^^^^agreed and it sounds like the coaches believe McMillian has a gear none of the other running backs have. Coach Jimmy Johnson always said SPEED KILLS! I know I hate the U 2 but the man did know football. I just hope we can be balanced on offense this year and take some of the pressure off the D. Opening day cannot get here soon enough all the hype is killing me.

I guess ideally we'd have a strong 1-2 combination, ala Jones/Suggs, with a few special situation guys available. We could also see, with injuries/redshirts, each of the freshmen have consecutive breakout years (like Evans, Williams, Wilson). Since we can't predict future injuries, I think the biggest good takeaway here is that once the coaches identify the best 2 or 3 right now, there are plenty of talented and willing players if the unthinkable does happen, to keep the ship going forward.

___

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Thing I took most from this was that Marshawn is apparently closer to 240 than 229. That's...a little big for my taste. Is it possible that we see a redshirt, even after being relatively impressed with his spring work? Don't think it's out of the question.

Is it possible that we see a redshirt

I would have said "no way in hell" a couple months ago. Now... If Shai McKenzie and Trey Edmunds are both healthy and impressive, Marshawn will have to really make some moves to play this year.

I still believe in Williams though.

I imagine the healthy bar is set pretty high for Shai. If there is a chance, he's a guy you want to redshirt to get that knee fully right if you can.

I think the staff has a lot more faith in JCC than the fan base does. They see him as the co#1 with Trey and that JCC wasn't fully healthy last year. They are probably willing to go into the year with JCC and Caleb with Edmunds on limited carries until ACC play if necessary.

But I'm hoping the talent of Shai and/or Marshawn is such that they force their way into the rotation from the start. A talent upgrade at the position would be welcome.

It might just be me but I think Marshawn is kind of a "fat" 229. He just looks kind of soft and...well...fat and out of shape haha. He looks like he could definitely use a redshirt year to get his weight under control and turn some of that bad weight into muscle, particularly if Shai pops off in practice/scrimmages. I hope to God Marshawn doesn't turn into the next Elan Lewis....

At the end of spring practice, he looked like he was around 240. If you had told me he was 225 without a roster sheet, I would have called you a liar.

But, he didn't look 240 because he was fat. He looked cut up like an NFL linebacker. I don't know how much fat he has to cut.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Yeah, I'll second that. In person, the dude looked ripped. I think Shane used 240 as an example of the upper limit of where he was, at some point or another. So long as he hasn't gained 10 pounds in the week since Beamer talked about getting him down to 225, he's probably closer to 230.

But, with all that being said, and this whole weirdness with the coaches, I don't think you can rule out a redshirt for him. I find it hard to believe that both Shai and Marshawn play this year. I've always thought Shai would get the redshirt, and it's easy to overreact to a few nice quotes, but if he keeps playing well in fall camp, it could certainly be Marshawn that sits out. And I don't mind that! These are good problems to have.

"He'll get after ya"- Frank Beamer, repeatedly.

Looking through the galleries from fan day at hokiesports.com a couple of things stood out:
The impact of Whit can't be emphasized enough.....its obvious there is a new emphasis on media and product. Like a master chef: we've had great ingredients before, but the presentation was lacking.
Beamer is the bomb. I'm so glad that he represents the Hokies. Just like Kellen Moore 'should' have won the Heisman (50-3 career...are you kidding me?).......Beamer should have a Championship. It may not happen but he richly deserves it.
And I'm honestly impressed at how our players come off with interviews.
Redman is huge.
Players and staff seem excited and confident, but with a chip on their shoulder......color me pumped.
Brewer is a smooth operator....if he's like that on the field, watch out.

Agree with Beams deserving a MNC but not with Kellen Moore. While 50-3 is an outstanding career there's a reason he's not a starter in the NFL.

That is not a good argument. Tebow was the one of the greatest college football players ever. He fought to get a starting job, and couldn't keep one.

But, shouldn't the Heisman should be based off College career, not NFL potential? Just like making an All State team in HS or being named in a POY award.

I just think that there were other, more talented QBs than Moore. Never bought into what little hype surrounded him. It looks like the folks that voted for the heisman didn't either.

I think the level of competition has a lot to do with it. Logan Thomas would have gone 50-3 if he played UVA nine or ten times each season.

My wife, my Mom and my kids attended fan day without me as I had another event I was compelled to attend.

My kids went in cheerleader uniforms. All had a great time, emphasized how much fun the guys and cheerleaders were and especially called out some guys as especially great in helping my kids have a memorable time. Especially have to shout out to #punterswag for his enthusiasm and attention to my little girls.

My wife reports it was well organized despite the last minute venue change due to weather but despite their attempting to run through all the lines to get signatures they only had the RB line left to go through. It was just a little short on time.

I understand there are scheduling realities but she reports they were not aware it would only last 1.5 hours.

Otherwise, excellent event.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Fantastic way to represent, Egbert.

Hah! Fantastic looking kids. Good on ya, and good on AJ!

I love it when the players ham it up for the kids. Great to see.

"Exit light..."

Apparently AJ was not the only one but, he's the guy my wife was able to take a picture.
My wife now tells me AJ insisted on having his pic taken with the future cheerleaders.

She tells me she's got a shot with a cheerleader with them too.
My girls were disappointed because they were about to get Sam Rogers autograph when the announcement came the guys had to leave.
I told them they would have another chance, he'd be there for school another 2 years.

The poster of the various players that was available for sigs was pretty nice as well.
