Duke All-ACC Linebacker Kelby Brown out for the season with a torn ACL

Duke's defensive scheme is a 4-2-5 with three safeties. The Duke defensive line slants to occupy blockers, and the two inside backers and the field/boundary safety pursue the football while the free safety and corners play a deep cover three. The impact is the same as Bud Foster's inverted cover 2, with the safeties in perfect position to support the run while covering the left and right short flats.

The entire defense is predicated on having four athletic tacklers roaming in space behind a wall of defensive linemen keeping the blockers off of them. Both Brown and linebacker David Helton had spectacular games against the Hokies. This is a very tough loss for Duke.

Wishing him a speedy recovery, talented kid.

This is huge. Brown had an excellent year in 2013 and looked like he was gonna hit the ground running this year. Now, Duke has just 2 of its front-6 back from last year. I think this is about as bad for Duke as losing Jack Tyler would have been for us. Hope the kid comes back 100%, he's a good one.

Best wishes for a full recovery to Kelby Brown. Hate to see this happen to anyone.

Yikes, I absolutely hate that for the kid, and thats a big, big loss for the Duke defense. They have a talented starting rotation, but their depth is a big, big concern, and now they essentially lost their everyman. Combine this with them losing Connette on offense... they're hurting a bit right now.

I definitely wish him a speedy Gonzalez comeback, provided we don't face him.

Are you aware that Duke and VT are both in the Coastal and will play every year?

The Dude Abides

He is a redshirt senior. Unless he gets a sixth year, the Hokies won't face him.

Plus, who on our front line would you match up against him in order slow him down?

That is something I dont wish on any student athlete. Get well soon Kelby.

Agreed. The kid is one heck of a player. You hate to see this, even more for a player who has already utilized his redshirt.

Given that he was injured in 2012 too for a whole season, he still has a chance to get a medical redshirt I believe and a 6th year of eligibility. So fortunately for him, his college career isn't over just yet.

I'd like to see the NCAA give him a 6th year. However it rarely happens like never ever ever..

Didn't Wang just get one? I feel like we've had others get it too.

Honestly, it happens more often than you think for athletes that lose 2 years to injury.

That means Tinashe Bere from my kid's school may have a shot at seeing playing time as a true freshman although I hate the circumstances for Brown. Football can be a cruel mistress. One I am a sucker for!

Tinashe Bere

Gesundheit.

Thank you, thank you very much!

I hope this guy gets another year. Its a shame when injury ends a players career, especially if it means being left out of the NFL. Plus, it couldn't be much better than being in undergrad for 6 years
