Jaws on LT3

Not sure if anyone else saw this and I have no clips, but Jaws was just talking about rookie QBs on ESPN and said Logan looked better than any of the rest. Even said "looked like a future all-pro."

Dammit. Beat me to it by 20 seconds

Bruce Arians knows what he was doing by selecting LT6 before any other coaches. The man is an offensive genius.

[internal screaming intensifies] ...this makes me so happy. Hopefully Logan will get the chance to do the damn thing!

Looks like former Hokie QBs will own the role of best backups in the league this year.

What this list really means is...they're all No. 2 in line for their team.

Let's keep in mind that it is week 1 of the pre-season.

AZ got him for a steal 6th round.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

*4th round.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I believe he was a 4th round pick, but he would've been a steal in the 1st round, imo

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

this is 2 parts funny and 2 parts creepy. I have mixed feelings about this gif.

It's like a nightmare where they speak only in screams.

It was a catch

Definitely an early assessment but Jaws also acknowledged how critical he was of Logan pre-draft and what a complete turnaround he's seen since working with the Cards.

We're all happy for the Big Dude

I'm happy for him.... But lets temper our excitement, its only week 1 of the preseason.

That being said, I'm not OVERLY surprised he looks good right now. I was never really that impressed with this year's crop of QBs entering the draft.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

This year's crop was really weak. Teddy Bridgewater a 1st round pick?

I honestly think that LT has as good or a better shot of being a long term NFL QB of any of those drafted ahead of him.

You can say that again

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Nah. Twice is enough.

I also think because LT is going to have time to be groomed into an NFL QB rather than get his teeth knocked in his first season.

I wonder what the success rate of rookie QBs who get thrown into the fire vs ones who get to sit behind a veteran for a couple of seasons before they take the reigns?

It would be interesting but it would have to be limited to QBs that sat then became a starter. There are far more QBs who are "rookies" that sit but stay perennial backups. Not many teams have the luxury to develop a QB like the Packers did. If they need a QB, they tend to play the new QB.

Teams like the Patriots, Denver, and Dallas aught to be grooming QBs. (Patriots have Mallet but he has been sitting for 4 years or so already. Denver has Osweiler who I am assuming is their future plan after Manning. Dallas has no one yet but I hope they draft one next year to start that process)

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

The Patriots drafted Jimmy Garoppolo in the 2nd round this year. The Cowboys have a lot of money locked up with Romo and considering he just turned 34 (3 years younger than Brady & 4 years younger than Peyton), he figures to be the Cowboys starter for at least the next 4 seasons. Even so, I agree with the general premise that you always want to have a young QB on your roster that you're grooming.

Insert the question "Why didn't they draft Johnny Manziel?" Home grown Texas boy who would fill Jerry World every week even while being a backup for 3-4 seasons. My mind is still blown that Jerry Jones didn't make that move when he was still on the board for the Cowboys' pick

"These people are losing their minds" - Mike Patrick

We've had much better examples of the former in recent years (Luck, Flacco, RGIII, Wilson, Kaepernick). That said, there's something to be said for the approach the Packers took with Aaron Rodgers.

That ALSO said, I believe Ryan Mallett is the heir apparent in New England.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

The Cards would love for LT to succeed and be able to start next year or by 2016 at the latest. With Kaepernick's new contract and Wilson due for one, it would flip the salary cap advantage that Seattle & SF have had back into the Cards favor for 2-3 yrs.

I don't know about Mallet being the heir apparent. Brady's still got a few years left in the tank. Mallett's contract is up after this year. And they drafted a QB. The Magic 8 Ball says "questionable".

I agree with with regards to Mallet. With Mallets contract ending soon, they specifically drafted Garappolo to be the new heir apparent. That is why some broadcasters have been caling this pre-season Mallets audition. The Pats hope he does well enough to get something for him in return, so they can free up cap space. The Pats know what they have in Mallet and are probably not going to keep him, especially if Garoppolo keeps out-playing him.

Credit to Lefty for aiding in LT3's development. Obviously it's too premature to make a definitive statement but hopefully the trend of NFL success continues with Brewer and whoever emerges out of Ford/Durkin.

I watched the game last night. I was very impressed with him.
I'm not sure which commentator it was but this is what he said: "Logan Thomas
just needs to focus on being an NFL QB." Umm I believe he already IS an
NFL QB. DUH!

@AMB4VT

That was an implicit TE joke, of course.

Shots of vindication all around, I says.

Yeah, that Mike O'Cain - he really knows how to develop a QB.

Probably because it's late and I've had a long day, but....

It's looking more and more like Logan and Tyrod are poised for future starting roles in the league which will make signing athletic QB's almost too easy.

ermergerd

I'm happy for LT and his performance I hope he keeps improving like this and has a long awesome career

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

I always respect JAWS's opinion on QB. If he says Logan is a future pro then he is. But HokieNation has been saying that for years.

Allen Ox

Uhhh...half of Hokie Nation has been saying that for years. The other half?

T I G H T E N D

..they're probably still calling for Leal.

I wasn't able to watch the game...

Are there any videos of Logan's series with the offense?

I believe he played the whole second half. I unfortunately did not get the game or I would post it up (they play the Vikings on Satuday so if people want me to I can post up the highlights).

Here are a few gif's though:

Here is his awesome scramble and throw for a TD:

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Those clips just really reinforce how absurdly massive everyone in the NFL is. Logan was huge in college and those guys make him look average.

38-0

Ok, recognize you are looking at comparing the size of a QB with offensive and defensive lineman.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

True but I was talking about how massive LT was even relative to college linemen also.

38-0

Except he really wasn't. He was massive compared to light LB's & safeties that were trying to tackle him, but not for linemen. And, when compared to the stereotypical 6'4" 225 QB, like a smaller version of Tim Tebow, he was a size larger, but not a huge amount larger. Now... when compared to a small light mobile QB like Tyrod, Randall, Michael, then he is huge. But those guys are below the bar for NFL QB size. It's just perspective. Joe Flacco is 6'6" 240, and nobody really talks about him being huge.

But they do talk about how big Cam Newton is -- and he's not quite LT's height/weight.

Maybe because, like Kaepernick, Cam is so mobile, and the stereotype for mobile QB's is small and light.

Not an NFL guy, and hard to tell with gifs, but doesn't it look like he's barely beating the defender to the WRs?

EDIT: From reading the various linked articles, it appears he's throwing it exactly where it needs to be.

Yep. When NFL defenders are as good as they are -- especially in the NFC West -- barely beating them is as good as hitting them wide open.

Good stuff. Quick releases, making decisions quickly, and throwing into some decent coverage while only letting his receiver catch it. Nice!

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

Our last 2 starting QB's have ended up in the pros, and both look as if they will be making 53-man rosters for the next few years... how many other schools can say that?

Very nice selling point we have here^

Yes, but at the same time we HAVE to start getting the results on the field again. We're very lucky that LT3 looks like he could be a good pro, but at the same time, you know recruits are then going to look at his play for VT the last 2 years and go "what the hell was going on THERE?" Fact of the matter is, we have to get an OL that can keep pressure off the QB. It just HAS to happen. You don't want the reputation of being a school that will take a future NFL starter and make him look absolutely pedestrian at best in college.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

This is very true. Hopefully Searels can develop a good, consistent line so that we can A) Run the Ball B) Open the field to the pass because of point A.

Thomas was given the ball for the entire second half. He looked calm and collected in the pocket, not appearing to make any hasty decisions that plagued him in practice. He went 7-for-8 for 69 yards in the third quarter and finished 11-for-12 for 113 yards and a touchdown. His passes were crisp and direct but they didn't have the usual velocity on them. Overthrowing his receivers or them not handling his passes wasn't an issue Saturday night.

This is a nice article. Good look.

Jaws keyed in on his TD toss too, the ability to extend the play with his legs and the pump and the presence to keep his eyes upfield and find the open receiver instead of taking it on foot and opening himself up to a hit.

And he tucked the ball, making ti look like he was running, there was a good hole. The secondary had to come up in run support and that opened the WR in the endzone.
It was a nice play on a broken pocket.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Importantly, Thomas never drops his eye level. This is something that most rookies struggle with early in their careers, as they can't help but react to pressure. There is pressure closing in on Thomas as he turns to the far sideline, but not enough to stop him from throwing the ball.

Being a VT QB these days prepares you for some things.
