Change in the competition with LOLUVA

per Virginia529K, the competition between VT and LOLUVA will now be known as the Commonwealth Clash, rather than Commonwealth Cup. There is no mention of any change in the trophy for the football game so I imagine that stays as it is. The interesting thing to me in this is how many of the sports rely on the final standings in the ACC Championships and not head to head competition if its there.

Not really a big deal as its mainly semantics but here is the summary link for what it all entails. There will be one point listed as a Fan Point, which appears will be announced just in time for some kind of competition prior to the football game at the beginning of November so something we can impact I guess.

Its a plan so LOLVA can say oh ya'll have not won anything. the past 10 years doesn't mean anything. Its the Commonwealth Clash now the Commonwealth Cup is old news.

Hate it

well darn...I guess we'll just have to beat them for another 10 years in a row...what a shame

Onward and upward

Ehhh... Looks like the game is still the Battle for the Commonwealth Cup, but now this Clash is a school year long battle between the two schools among all the sports we both compete. Essentially, its a revival of the Commonwealth Challenge that was started a few years back (and was discontinued because we were thoroughly getting our asses kicked every year). Unfortunately, the way in which football is weighted evenly with everything else, I expect the results will be even more lopsided this time around.

Well, if we're going with sports in which both schools have varsity programs, wrestling, swimming&diving and women's soccer will all have a good chance of keeping us in it.

To put things in perspective, last year would have been

UVa - 12.5 -

  • Baseball, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Volleyball, Lacrosse, Men's X-C, Women's X-C, Women's Swim & Dive, Women's Soccer, Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis, Wrestling

VT - 8.5 -

  • Softball, Football, Men Indoor Track, Women Indoor Track, Men's Outdoor Track, Women's Outdoor Track, Golf, Men's Swim & Dive

Tie - Men's Soccer

Nevermind.

Or just 38-0 bro

VTMidge

The old version had two points for football.

I think it is more a case of VT having closed the gap in a lot of the other sports.

Edit: Nevermind. Alum07 calculated it and we would have lost last year more than I originally thought. I got mixed up with some of the sports awarding the point for the regular season match-up, while others counting the ACC tournament results. I do not like that we won the ACC championship in Wrestling, yet would get no points for it and we beat UVa in the ACC Women's Soccer Tournament, but they get the point for the win in the regular season.

Ya. Rules need some tweaking. Success is one thing, Success against your rival is another. Which is it Commonwealth Clash? Which is it?

Wiley, Brown, Russell, Drakeford, Gray, Banks, Prioleau, Charleton, Midget, Bird, McCadam, Pile, Hall, Green, Fuller, Williams, Hamilton, Rouse, Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Hosley, Fuller, Exum, Jarrett

Exactly. The football game is still the Commonwealth Cup. This is some kind of in-state version of the Director's Trophy where other sports count.

I perused the article and read the following:

This isn't actually a renaming of the Commonwealth Cup, but the Commonwealth Challenge

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia%E2%80%93Virginia_Tech_rivalry

The Commonwealth Cup is and always will be about football. The Commonwealth Challenge included all sports, but was cut short by April 16th. So really they're just starting that up again with a new (stupid) name.

EDIT: I failed to read Alum07's post above so I'm not the first to point this out. Leaving this up because it correctly identifies the reason for the challenge ending (not just because we were getting our asses handed to us).

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Though I wouldn't call it a clash exactly. A clash implies both sides stand an equal chance at winning.

I wonder if UVA still has a huge clock counting the days till the commonwealth clash? They can call it whatever they want, as long as they are always on the losing side.

I can confirm the existence of the clock.

Yawn

This rebranding ranks in the scale of important news tied with the ACC's new logo launch.

I'm sorry. I thought you said "LOLUVA" and "competition".

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

The state knows that LOLUVA will never get the cup back based on football results, so they are trying to cook the competition so they can take the cup.
