Braxton Miller may have been sidelined due to injury, the Buckeyes still present a formidable threat to the Virginia Tech Hokies when the two clash on Sept 6 in Columbus. J.T. Barrett may be inexperienced, hes been described (by Urban Meyer) as accurate, detailed, athletic, and as much of a dual threat as Braxton Miller. If the Hokies hope to defeat the Buckeyes, they will have to move on from Braxtons injury and focus on J.T. Barrett and entire Ohio State team.

We all saw how Kenny Guiton had zero hiccups when he took over for Miller last year - we have to assume that Barrett will do the same.
No way. I just listened to Danny Kanell on the SVP & Russillo show and he said that when he was at an OSU practice this past offseason (for the 'CFB Bus Blitz'), he watched as Barrett and the other back-up were throwing everything in the dirt. He said Meyer told him and Mack Brown that there really isn't a strong, standout back-up to Miller yet.
Barrett in the spring game was 15 of 33 for 151 yards. That's okay, but an Urban Meyer offense depends 99.9% on the ability of the QB.
Meyer will be limiting the playbook in the beginning of the season because there's too many nuances in their playbook for a RS-Fr. to grasp as opposed to the RS-Sr. that was Guiton.
This game is going to be a lot closer than a lot of people think -- Bud Foster's ability to confuse quarterbacks paired with one of (if not the) strongest defensive backfield in the nation will force some turnovers in the passing game. Pair that with our underrated defensive line against an untested Ohio State o-line and I think we've got an extremely intriguing game on our hands now.
Yeah, I think there will be a significant dropoff to Barrett. But that doesn't help our offense against their defensive line.
First one to 13 might win.
Agreed. I'm starting to get nervous that this will turn into a shootout of field goals. And this is one area we don't have any confidence in yet in whereas I'm sure OSU will have plenty of talent and confidence, (especially at home)
But going into the game, we still have to assume that Barrett has the ability to make plays. I know our D will have their ears pinned back, and Bud will not call off the dogs the whole game, but we can't go in thinking that we're going against a quarterback like David Watford for LOLUVA.
finished watching the spring game and id say 5 or 6 of his 15 completions where screen passes either swing passes to rb or wr bubbles. 5 or 6 more to TEs over the middle, he hit maybe 2 slants and then 1 or 2 decent throws to the middle of the field and 1 or 2 quick outs. NOTHING hit down field not even close really i think our DBs will have a field day and bait him into whatever they want.
while i expect it still to posisble be a close game i would not count out the fact that we could blow it open with a couple defensive tds if we could get up early and put some preasure on the kid to throw more than he would like. urban said in the spring game they were going to throw it 78% of the time so they could see who the back up QB would be. they did not have alot of success throwing the ball and they didnt have that great of a pass defense last season either. (statiistically speaking one of the worse if not the worse in the B1G according to the anouncers) so i dont really expect him to have as good a #s on as he did in the spring game.
^^^This, and this is why I think they will try to wear us out running right at us. That's why I am hoping we can put points up early. We need to throw them out of their game plan from the beginning.
The bright side is that the combo of a less than overwhelming OSU pass threat and 2 excellent VT cover corners = an extra guy (or more) in the box to counter that.
Defensive td's, I miss those.
While true, Guiton was also a 5th-year senior last year and was a boss.
Guiton was a r/Sr when he started in place of Miller. Having that experience in the program can make the transition a lot smoother. That being said, I think we still need to be very concerned about Barrett's effectiveness. Not to mention the rest of the Buckeyes.
watching the OSU spring game and urban meyer said in the pregame that jones was well above JT Barret and although im only a couple drives in im not impressed by barrett at all. his throws have been all over hes taken 2 sacks one in the endzone which he fumbled which was turned into a td and i havent seen him complete a pass yet. jones on the other hand has looked pretty good has control of his O and making pretty good throws had a dropped long ball on an excellent throw. im really curious to know when and how JT Barrett became the starter.
also on a sidenote the announcers were talking about the schedule they spent alot of time talking about the openner at navy and then looking ahead to nov 7th and michigan st... then they come back and make a small mention of us. go ahead and look past us if you want to.
also saw something that i really really liked.... when they kicked FGs they would have to kick 2 fgs in a row. so if you get a penatly or mike london calls 6 time outs before you kick and you have to kick again then you dont freeze up on the 2nd kick. also the kicking competion was right there on display for everyone to see. you have to be able to kick under presure. kicking in pratice is alot easier than kicking when everyone is watching im not a kicker but i think kicking is alot like free throws more mental than physical.
What's Meyer gonna say? You don't think he's gonna point out that he hasn't played a live game since Oct of his Sr yr in HS, has only thrown 200 or so passes in his entire HS and College career, and was less than overwhelming in the spring game...do you?
I'm sure the kid's got some talent, but how would you have felt about Logan Thomas (who was at least as athletic and QB ready as this kid) as a r-frosh having to replace Tyrod with just a couple of weeks before the season opener in 2010?
First: What type of performance does Barrett need to have at Navy to give us a good idea of his preparedness?
Second: I think we are extremely fortunate that Facyson and Ke. Fuller were able to play at such a high level as freshmen, and will be able to give us experience and stability while the other young players mature into the system.
…and not really a comparison, but 3rd & Logan 2010 is still one of my favorite moments from that season.
After the Navy game in Baltimore, the Hokies will have a good idea of what to expect from Ohio State. Either way, playing Ohio State in Columbus is a pretty good experience for the young VT team.
of course they're a threat. They are still favored and have a lot of talent
They will have a good RB (not Carlos Hyde but good), a good TE and their OL is new but they will not be push overs. That team is loaded with talent. Their defense is still going to be very very strong.
I watched the Orange Bowl again last night...just because. I REALLY hate that Miller is injured. That kid laid it out there when he played. I would love to watch the Hokies play a Miller led Buckeye team.
I still think the Buckeyes are favorites, though. They're at home, good defense, and we have a new QB and new front seven.
I'm not the least bit relieved that Miller is not playing. We still have everything to prove, and in this case nothing to gain. If we lose, we lost to r-FR is what everyone will say. Doesn't matter that the last 2 Heisman winners were r-FR's. If we win, we were supposed to because of said r-FR.
Obviously I want us to win, and win big. So as to leave no doubt that even if Miller had been in the game it would've been a challenge to the bucks.
tOSU is not going to go 6-6 because they lost Miller. They will be at worst 9-3 this year Including a loss to us. They will be ranked all year. Beating them will still be a big deal for us.
Did anybody really think that they weren't a threat anymore after Miller went down? C'mon, get real. New guys on the oline, RB, WR, and now QB positions but they have always showed that they can recruit their asses off.
I know, right? It isn't like the cupboard is bare in Columbus
Clemson vs OSU
Starting to watch this game and only go through Clemson's first drive and it was. 16 yard rb pass on 3rd and 8, quick read sweep, zone option, then again jumbo zone option and boyd goes the distance.
OSU's d gives up a ton of yards and isn't as good as you would think. IMO our game needs to be speed speed speed and pound it up.
I think you have to factor in the new OSU D scheme, which is designed to be more like MSU/VT's attacking D. This makes looking at last year's film less useful.
very valid point however, learning a system like buds(in a spring/summer) and actually using it like bud/VT D is a whole different level. I wouldn't be surprised if we see some similarities but there were some glaring holes that Clemson ran through and once they spread out OSU's D it was too easy for watkins/boyd.
I wonder how the navy game might effect their build up/scheme for us the next week. Also have to wonder how tiring it will be for the d line. Would be great to see navy run for 300+ yards and just wear them down.
Our guys face Bud's D every day in practice.
Most important takeaway from that video - Britt McHenry WOW! As for Barrett coming in, like was said above, OhState has blue chippers lined up behind blue chippers behind the starting blue chippers. They will still be very formidable.
