I like it.

(Side note, clicked on "ranking coaches 1-130", and CFB is only #30, just ahead of Rich Rod and Al Golden. Skeptical.)

I don't agree with the ranking, but I understand it. We don't have the best record against big time/ranked opponents and I think that hurt Frank a lot in that ranking.

Some facts...

Beamer is 8-16 against year end AP ranked teams (i.e. actual good teams rather than hyped teams) since 2007.

Only five coaches above .500 are David Shaw, Jimbo Fisher, Saban, Les Miles, and Spurrier in that time span.

Beamer has as good or a better percentage against year end ranked teams than half of those ranked ahead of him:

#9 Dantonio (8-21)
#11 Art Briles (4-19)
#12 Bill Snyder (4-12)
#14 Mark Richt (10-21)

And #18 thru #28:

#18 David Cutliffe (0-18)
#19 Mike Leach (5-13)
#20 Jim Mora (3-6)
#21 Bobby Petrino (6-13)
#22 Pat Fitzgerald (5-16)
#23 Bronco Mendenhall (2-14)
#24 Brett Bielema (7-23)
#25 James Franklin (0-12)
#26 Kevin Sumlin (5-11)
#27 Gary Anderson (1-9)
#28 Mark Hudspeth (0-2)

Also only 10 coaches have coached more games against more ranked times during that span. Some of those ranked ahead of him may have a better percentage but haven't actually won that many games against ranked opponents.

Add in there that three of the five you mentioned are in the SEC where the teams are all artificially ranked higher by virtue of over half the conference starting out ranked and it's not really as bad as everyone likes to point out.

The last couple of so-so years probably affected Frank's ranking as a coach. Time for Hokies to kick it back in gear!

....and of course the last two seasons.

It didn't seem to affect Bret Bielema, Mike Leach, Larry Fedora, or Pat Fitzgerald much (to name a few)...

Can see it if we even lose to OSU but win the ACC. Obviously we'd be in. But other than going undefeated or 11-1 and winning the ACC then I think we get left out. But here's to hoping it happens. Heck I think getting back to the ACCCG with one loss will be success. I know everyone thinks UNC is our toughest conference opponent and that we could potentially lose to them but I will explode if that happens. We'll see how good their new RB is but I believe in our D's ability to keep them under control.

If any of those situaitons happen, that would be icing on the cake, 2015 and 2016 are where its at.... look out.

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

The only way we would get into the playoff this year (unless everybody loses multiple times) after a loss to anOSU would be run the table over everybody including an undefeated FSU in the ACC CG. Unfortunately our out of conference schedule is decent but not overwhelming and our ACC schedule this year is weak because we miss Clemson, FSU, and Loserville in the regular season.

It's perhaps a bit overly optimistic to say this, but oh well.

The only game on our schedule that I see us being huge underdogs is against Ohio State. Every other regular season game is winnable. We are lucky to escape FSU, Clemson, and Louisville in our crossover games this year. So it's not an insane thought to think we could pull the upset in Columbus and run through the conference without a scratch.

Is this likely? No, not at all. We don't have a QB yet and key parts of our offense are largely unproven. But, if guys step up and VT returns to anything like it was 3 and 4 years ago, it's certainly not out of the question.

Of course then you have to talk about a matchup with FSU in the ACCCG to solidify a playoff spot and that is no easy task, either. In summary, it's not as crazy a thought as you may think, but competing for a playoff birth should not be the measuring stick for this season.

BC was winnable last year too though

Was watching E$PN and Herbstreit/David Pollack were both jocking Louisville as their potential sleeper team plus their QB and RB as potential big award winners this year. I will be interested to see how Louisville fairs this year.

Let's beat Duke first. Then we'll talk.

Leonard. Duh.

Matt Hayes is an ass clown. His argument for Virginia Tech makes little to no sense. In my opinion, this is nothing more than a hackish attempt to get some pageviews from a passionate fanbase.

I agree. I read it but, it was really superficial and at the very least doesn't take nto account needing to beat FSU in the ACCCCCCCCCCCG to even be in contention.

Perhaps if it was titled, Teams that might surprise you this year....

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I saw the name Matt Hayes in the OP's intro and immediately realized it wasn't one of TKP's writers or Andy and I immediately dismissed it.
