Just think if they hadn't decided to 'make the decision quickly'. We'd be walking in the stadium for the W&M game wondering. On the serious side, it doesn't bother me. As old school as Frank is about these things, that just gives me an indication that the backup is pretty darn close in performance to the starter thus far. If that's the case, it will be a vast departure from years past. So... no worries. Well... unless it's like in Cleveland where both Johnny Football & Brian Who are pretty bad at the moment.

Your last sentence is exactly my concern. I'm not saying both Brewer and LeAl are bad. But, I do wonder if the coaches expected Brewer to come in and be head and shoulders above. Maybe he just isn't? I'm sure LeAl has turned up his game since the Sun Bowl. But, maybe the two are just closer than previously thought because Brewer hasn't shined as expected.

It really sounds like Leal has just done a whole lot better than expected. My feeling is that Brewer is the guy, and the coaches have thought that for some time, but they've let the competition go on longer to ensure we'd have a game-ready backup, and not be up a creek like we were last year if our starter gets injured.

I think this is the thought process too. Also, with so many closed practice sessions and secrecy around fall camp this year none of us really know how much better or worse MB is compared to how we think he is.

I am sincerely hoping they already have a starter picked out, but are choosing not to announce it. Hopefully the players already know who as do the coaches. It is not out of the realm of possibility with all the secrecy surrounding this preseason.

If we had a 5* returning starter and it was taking this long, then, yes, I'd be concerned. I'm not expecting someone to come in and light the field on fire. If we had, say, Jameis Winston as last year's starter, and now we were in a QB battle, I'd be flipping out. But we didn't. So I'm not.
But we're dealing with a situation where we have two guys, one transfer and one back up, who both have had significant time in college football, albeit neither with much experience. We're essentially trying to figure out who is going to be the transitional guy between Logan and Future. Since both guys have significant practice time under their belts, I think we'll be ok with whoever gets it.

This decision could very well already be made. With such little access, it may be that one guy is getting way more reps with 1st team and that the rest is just a formality. The lack of an official decision may just be to keep the heat on both guys to get the best practice reps out of them.
Ideally, we as fans want to know sooner rather than later, but whoever wins the job should be able to handle W&M and get plenty of time to prep for OSU.

Yeah, because we really need that kind of edge going against W&M. Especially since there's virtually no film on either guy anyway and all the practices have been closed. Or.... maybe we don't after all. I don't think that's aa concern at all, I just think the competition has been closer than expected.

I'm thinking that if the decision has not been made, it's relatively clear to the coaches. However, the idea of not letting the players know has some merit, given Loeffler's admission of hyperfocus on Logan last year. Leal wasn't prepared to step in, and I think Loeffler realized his backup has to be ready to go. This is a way of making sure everyone works hard toward being the guy.

Don't know what you mean 6 hrs, here in the ME its been Friday for a solid 14 hrs and for whatever reason my math in public (also known as in my head) sucks at 7 hr difference really means its just 2 or 3 hr difference. Why is there no QB named!

So make fun of the theatrics in soccer a little too frequently, but does anyone know what the heck happened to the guy on the ground? Did somebody step on his calf or something?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
That is what I was assuming happened, but I didn't want to assume anything so completely ridiculous as what happened. As the old quote goes, "Soccer is a gentleman's game played by hooligans, and rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentleman" just glad I was on the other side of that.
On a side note.. WHY IS THERE NOT A QB NAMED! This day is now 21 hours old. Once again the Middle East gets something wrong!

The rare actual penalty in Soccer. It happens maybe 3 times a season. *
I love the fact that number 8 throws his hands up as if "It's just another dive", because you know he figures he has a better than even chance of convincing the refs.
* I can say that with confidence, because I watch no Soccer.

I will bet that it will be announced Saturday or Monday morning during the interview for Bill & Mary .. would be surprised if we get word of it this weekend
EDIT- scrimmage could get cancelled due to bad weather, its raining. Most likely moved to Saturday. ahhh I can't take it anymore.

Three TD catches for Isaiah Ford at today's scrimmage. 26, 27 and 35 yards. #Hokies— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) August 22, 2014
He probably mowed down everyone on the defense on his way to the endzone:
Bucky Hodges also had a 55-yard touchdown catch. #Hokies— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) August 22, 2014
The QB situation remains as clear as ever:
Michael Brewer and Mark Leal both had two touchdowns passes. Brenden Motley had one. #Hokies— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) August 22, 2014
No QB announcement yet. Beamer said the coaches will talk about the scrimmage and make a decision. #Hokies— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) August 22, 2014

Boy am I excited to see what these freshmen can do with the ball!
WR coach Aaron Moorehead on if freshman Isaiah Ford could start: "There's no doubt about it. ... You deserve it. Period" #Hokies— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) August 22, 2014
Moorehead pretty up front about Demitri Knowles needing to up his game to remain in consideration for starting spot. #Hokies— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) August 22, 2014
Ford and Kendall Fuller have squared off quite a bit this August. Fuller's won quite a bit, but Ford has gotten his share. #Hokies— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) August 22, 2014

Holy jeez. #1? I heard the kid was good but holy jeez. If he's better than Stanford and Stanford has picked up his physicality and his game since last year, we might actually have a 1-2 receiving punch that could work wonders.

Am I the only one concerned that we will be naming a QB starter just 1 week out of the first game?
Maybe.
Well, the coaches might also be a little concerned that they don't have a 5th year senior to plug in there.
But, what do I know?
But we have plenty of TE's...

Ok, it's now Friday, where's the announcement?
I know, right? It's been Friday for 6 hours! Get on the ball, Frank! A younger head coach would have made this decision by now. *exasperated sigh*

WE DEMAND ANSWERS!
Arrrggh. When will he give us what we want?
Give it to me Franky! Give it to me!
Damm, suspense is killing me. I haven't slept all night. :-)
That's what she said.
FWIW, Wyatt Teller told me recently that he thinks its going to be Brewer.
More importantly, who does Wyatt Teller think is going to start at guard? I want to see him Hulk Smash in there!
If he doesn't start, I would be VERY surprised.
Its Brewer!
Source?
Me. Just thought I'd help out.
It doesn't. /sarc
And to make things worse, I can't think of an appropriate gif.
What a let down. You can't mess with us today, we're on edge!
For Leal, a super serial let down..and just when I thought we had something brewing...
"It's Leal!"

"It's Griffer!"

I picture the stuff from various movies where the line just opens up and let's Dadi flatten Griff a few times.

I'm ready for some real football. Go Hokies!
So make fun of the theatrics in soccer a little too frequently, but does anyone know what the heck happened to the guy on the ground? Did somebody step on his calf or something?
No, he pushed the opposing player and fell n an attempt to get the ref to red card the guy in yellow.
That is what I was assuming happened, but I didn't want to assume anything so completely ridiculous as what happened. As the old quote goes, "Soccer is a gentleman's game played by hooligans, and rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentleman" just glad I was on the other side of that.

It's so beautiful...
I need a slomo replay of this in real video.
I legged both of these and legged like your last 10 recent comments. Thank you, this made my day.
haha well thanks! You broke my 1,000 leg mark then!
He looked offside.
He wasn't.
WC futbol newbie here: why isn't that offsides?
Player isn't beyond the second to last defender when the ball is played.
Goalie's just there like

Ahh yes, AS Roma... whose colors are orange and maroon
sooooooo when's this scrimmage happening?
What time is the scrimmage today? Odds are they will announce after watching film anyways
D'oh. That's right. They said a decision would be made today.
They didn't say they'd tell us the decision.
Frank Beamer is trolling us!
Those semantics, they'll get after ya.
Lefty already said that's what they will do.
And there's this from M. Barber:
So could the decision be postponed til tomorrow? ARRGH!!!
Scrimmage is still on for now. Looks like the rain has moved through.
News out of today's scrimmage:
Future star:
He probably mowed down everyone on the defense on his way to the endzone:
The QB situation remains as clear as ever:
Well, shoot!
Great minds think alike!
Also this kid is going to be a stud:
Boy am I excited to see what these freshmen can do with the ball!
Holy jeez. #1? I heard the kid was good but holy jeez. If he's better than Stanford and Stanford has picked up his physicality and his game since last year, we might actually have a 1-2 receiving punch that could work wonders.
Phillips could turn out to be a stud as well.
Damn...DBU not back for Fall Semester yet?
Two picks. Not sure the circumstances
Was just fast reacting to the 5 TD passes.
3 of the 5 TD receptions for Isaiah. Impressive work.
I can't vote yet but I'm trying to leg you so hard right now
Edit: And take that witchya!
I got you. Also gave you a leg so you can give all the legs you want in the near future!
Ugh

Ford was a huge steal from Louisville absolutely going to be a 6-8 TD type year for him. Ohh man 1 more week!!!!!!!
#ALLoftheTD's
Juice also had 54 rushing yards...Is this the year we have a Shai+Jucie 1-2 punch and then a haymaker with edmunds ?
Well, shoot.
Leal refuses to give up.
:(
Ugh. I don't like to hear this one bit.
hopefully just a minor sprain
