I saw that, and was like "Uh duh."

Well, it IS the Romp, Stomp, and Chomp Harvest Celebration at Wintergreen Winery that day...

This season will mark the first time since 1995 that fewer than 25,000 season tickets are purchased.

Since '05, average attendance at Scott Stadium has dropped each year from the previous season, with only two exceptions, in 2007 and in 2011. The figures are listed below.

* 60,973 in 2005 (7-5 record; six home games)

* 57,732 in 2006 (5-7 record; six home games)

* 59,824 in 2007 (9-4 record; six home games)

* 53,815 in 2008 (5-7 record; seven home games)

* 47,986 in 2009 (3-9 record; seven home games)

* 45,459 in 2010 (4-8 record; seven home games)

* 47,940 in 2011 (8-5 record; seven home games)

* 46,650 in 2012 (4-8 record; seven home games)

* 46,279 in 2013 (2-10 record; eight home games)

Good lord, that's awful, especially when you consider their capacity is 61,500 (before factoring in lawn seating). They're essentially operating at nearly 2/3 capacity over the last few years, and are expecting an even lower turnout this year.... a lot lower. 23,500 season tickets were bought, the first time since 1995 that number fell below 25k.

Note that in '07 and '13, it played host to VT. Hokies helped the attendance.

I'd say we usually fill about a third of the stadium.

I think what is most astounding is the fact that attendance dropped in the HeadBallCop's first season and only marginally increased following their "resurgent" 2011 season. The downward trend in ticket sales is indicative of more than just a mediocre performance on the field, but rather increasing apathy within their fan base. Following a 9-4 season in 2007, attendance dropped approximately 6,000 fans. Another 2,000-fan dropoff occurred in 2012.

The takeaway here? UVa fans are the ACC's equivalent of Tampa Bay Rays fans: When the team is winning and it becomes cool to be at the game, people show up. Lose, and people continue to spend their Saturdays elsewhere. Sadly, that's not how successful college programs are established nor operated.

Could the same be said for the Miami Heat?

No, the Heat have actually won something.

It is still astounding to me why more UVA "fans" aren't demanding refunds.

"Exit light..."

Agreed 100%, except for the word "sadly".

That seems a little rude for the Rays fans.

What a weird article to release on your own website. There wasn't anything in there that made anyone want to buy a ticket. It looked like something the Roanoke Times or Daily Progress would write to half ridicule UVA's incompetence.

I'd like to see the financial impact to the Cavalier Club - or whatever it is called. If season ticket sales are down, their donations have to be down just as much.

That means - no room for stadium improvements (ie: funds to have the 'T' removed from the 50 yard line logo), and hiring more amateur photoshopartists

Time Cop's job is certainly on the line after seeing that. No matter what we all want, if the are < 6 wins and have attendance in the low to mid 40s, he is gone - and maybe before the season is over.

So, we can now do the "Way To Early Next UVa Coach" predictions. Any players? I don't know enough about them - other then:
1. They were really bad last year
2. There fan base is horrible
3. Their linemen can make snow angels
4. Game attendance isn't enough to create bathroom lines.
5. Media employees have middle school level photoshop skills.

Tiki Barber?

The real question is will they go the way of Miami and be connected to like 50 HUGE NAMES and then settle for someone else, and claim it was a master hiring and that they're back? Or will they start a new trend and just hire a nobody and hope to god he pans out? Seriously what coach in their right mind would want to take over that program right now. Its surpassed dumpster fire, its more like a wildfire at this point

That's their official athletics page right? I'd think they would not want to be trumpeting their ineptitude.

They went 9-4 one year? That might be more surprising.

Glad that since then other teams have realized the fun in beating UVa and have decided to join in.
