Hi Everyone,
Just got back from a righteous TOTS Tuesday, and I came upon the idea to casually inquire about certain cultural references prevalent on TKP that perhaps other (either older, or younger) generations may not be particularly privy to, preeminent among these being "Zima" and its cultural contemporaries.
Baring in mind there is a wide array of generations and gaps separating each of them within our community, I hope to facilitate an environment where we can share all of these particularities with everyone.
Please excuse my unsubtle approach in proffering this predicament, however my fascination with times since past forces my hand in pursuit of greater communal understanding and bonding.
Thanks for the thoughtful responses.

That's what google is for.
This brings up a question I've wanted to ask:
In this day of tech, are 'Koofers' still a thing at VT?
They sure as hell were from 2000-2004!!
I abused this shit out of it from 2009-2013, so I assume it still is.
Any one here remember 'Barger Fest'
or Mr. Fooz, 117 S. Main?
sort of...Think they put an end to it right before I got there in 92
I've heard stories of Barger Fest. I partied there in 2005. I don't know how people lived there. It was the worst living situation I saw while in Blacksburg.
I sorta remember Barger Fest - in the rain - '90 or '91. The Kind played, and maybe Out of The Blue. From the way I look in the photos I'm surprised I remember that much. Though come to think of it I do remember the girls peeing in the men's room sink at Burger King.
Blast form the past: The Kind
On their webpage, they have a pic from Solarfest! Another one of the ones from years past.
Mr Fooz yes! Best pastrami subs. And this was when Top of the Stairs was where you could get a pretty good turkey sub.
Any one here remember 'Barger Fest' -Yes
or Mr. Fooz, -Yes
117 S. Main -Yes
Huge leg up for that! Absolutely both Mr. Fooz and 117 S Main. 117SM was good for loud bands & dime beers. Fooz was good for hot subs & watching fights while you downed your beer. I can't remember the name of the bar that was upstairs on the building facing on S. main that was basically a walk around the corner from Books Strings & Things. FTR, Mr Fooz had the best hot subs in town, while the Sub Shoppe (below TOTS) had the best cold subs.
Was the upstairs bar Ton 80, or something like that? Thats the only one I can think of that was upstairs when I was there outside of The Balcony.
We were at Ton 80 one afternoon, and the owner showed up with his van. Full of beer! He offered a pitcher apiece if we helped him unload and carry the cases upstairs. We knocked it out in like 20 minutes! He was so happy, we drank free that day (into evening...) I miss the $3 pitchers there. Had some great times there.
Right location, but it was a different name when I was there. I want to think the name even changed while I was there. I think it probably changed ownership/names every 3-4 years. I also think they had severe building code issues.
Yep $3 pitchers of Heineken on Wednesday nite it's a wonder I remember that
Not only are they still a thing, some Hokies (and one of my friends) started koofers.com to give everyone access to these glorious things.
63-68 , Koofers yes, Zima no(wine&cheese), Tots no,(heck can't even remember a downtown beer joint, do recall the Golden Gobbler just outside of town. 20,000 seat stadium. Amazing how much has changed in 50 short years.
Nope, there's too many girls in this gif.
Seriously? Wasn't too long ago that TOTS was THE sorority hangout, especially on Tuesday nights.
karaoke tuesday at TOTS was the only place in town where chicks outnumbered dudes. many a great time. including one fateful evening where we popped every breaker in the place by tinkering around with the porch lighting after consuming 3 rails each. old rails. not new rails. Trouble.
Wait--what's a "new rail"??
They're smaller these days. I wasn't around Blacksburg when they apparently used to be in huge mugs or something, but they're now in the same sized cups as all other mixed drinks.
Bummer. They used to be at least 24oz. It might have been 32--my memory of Rails is a little hazy for some reason. Either way it was like a freakin Big Gulp of rail liquor.
TOTS also used to have dime beers on Fridays in those same 24 or 32oz cups.
So I defended my thesis yesterday, and to celebrate I went to TOTS and got a rail for the first time. I kept the cup as a souvenir but I went to the underground so I had to stash it. Long story short, there is a TOTs cup hidden in the newspaper stands near the underground, which I have dubbed the holy gRAIL, if anyone wants to go on a quest for it. Meanwhile, I'm headed home with more degrees than UVA had fans at their Spring Game.
Congrats on the thesis defense!
Thanks, man!
I'll look for that gRAIL asap when I get into town Friday night
haha awesome, I hope it's still there
The Zima reference is from the Colin Cowherd rant about LOLUVa football.
Whatever happened to Zima? With the sheer amount consumed at UVa, it's hard to believe they went out of business.
Zima
It lives on in altered branding - Mike's Hard Lemonade, Smirnoff Ice, Bacardi whatever, and all those other clear beers that occupy one end of the beer cooler. I know, you were being rhetorical, but just sayin'...
I wasn't being rhetorical. I was genuinely curious as to what happened to that brand.
It suffered the same fate as Bartles & Jaymes wine coolers. They were both the first of their type, and they failed to carry through on the initial push. Other brands out-marketed them, and they disappeared.
They didn't "go out of business" per se, since it was produced by Coors (according to wikipedia). It essentially went the way of Crystal Pepsi.
I get a D- for my photoshop skills but....
If you've never listened to this, drop whatever it is that you're doing and listen to it right now.
Tried to link but it didn't take. Thank you for this.
On the coldest nights in the winter listening to this will warm you to your core.
Does matter how bad things get in life I can always listen to these and smile knowing I was born and raised a redneck Hokie instead of a Zima sippin Wahoo.
Gets better and better each time I hear it. It's glorious!! LOL
Thank you for posting this. This is one of the best things in the world I have ever heard. I mean he jumped right in as soon as that guy said UVA football. Then tells that guy to be sophisticated while vt comes up and punches you in the neck. Awesome awesome awesome.
A story about when I first moved to Charlottesville. I hadn't been in Charlottesville before, and as I'm driving down the road, I see that one of the halls is named "Caruthers Hall". Of course, I burst out laughing and the person in the car with me had no idea why.
I thought about Caruthers Hall the first time I saw a "Caruthers" reference on TKP. That's a name that was made for wahooishness. (Sorry to expand the english language, but we all know that wahooishness exists, and we all know it when we see it, there just hasn't been a name derived for it until now.)
Now I'm debating whether I should change my moniker for LOLUVA to the Carrutherses. e.g. "Virginia Tech will travel north to Lame Stadium to play the Carrutherses"
cool idea...but that's an awful lot of keystrokes...I want the act of making fun of LOLUVA to be as simple as possible since I do it so often.
Perhaps we should just change their name to a symbol, akin to Prince. I submit to you the football team formerly known as LOLUVA:
caaaruthas!
"UVA -- they would roll up in the fertile position against Va Tech" -- did he actually say that? I'd keep replaying it, but my husband's starting to look at me like I'm weird. . .
Yep, the fertile position.
The implications are far-reaching.
Thanks for the confirmation. Have a bit of a hearing impairment, and wasn't sure I heard it correctly. Funny thing is, I get the feeling the guy had no idea what he actually said. Sort of like the mother of all Freudian slips.
I don't even care that he dropped a few "Vah Techs" in there in the first vid, that is glorious
Also there's these horrifying things... I apologize if you're eating lunch.
To this day, I still get queasy when I smell/think of Peach Schnaaps after a night of post-Chris Kinzer field goal Peach Bowl celebration in Atlanta.

I remember going to that bowl game thinking, when will I ever have the chance to go to a bowl game again. Little did I know!!
Back in my day we always drank Grape MD 20/20 because it had a higher alcohol content. I do not know if that is still true.
In my group of friends at least we used it like icing someone, except much more cruel: 10 mins to finish or there's another lined up for you!
I take it that most of your nights end like this:
Did anyone else have Dr. Trivedi for chemistry (1035/36)? He used to joke about drinking too much MD before he came to class.
No, but that reminds me of something. My HS chemistry teacher was one Mr. Rinker, Dan. D.Rinkerโฆ
anyway, we used to joke about what "other" chemicals he kept in the closet at the front of the room.
he was a stark contrast to Glanville...
Glanville was a waste of my tuition.
Eff Glanville...that is all.
Edit: I remember in class when someone told him their was a typo in his book and he got rather angry at the poor kid.
He purposefully put typos in his books so that he could reissue them and make more money from kids having to buy the latest edition. He admitted that to a group of us during office hours.
I only had two professors in 4 and a half years that really stuck out for being horrible and he was one of them. The other was in the physics department he eventually got fired because of so many bad reviews. I can't remember his name but for some reason the word Slanky comes to mind.
Ah, that makes sense....he was horrible, 8am first semester Freshman year no less.
Same here. Sucked waking up for that class. And guess who gave an attendance quiz the Friday after the aTm Hurricane Isabel game?
I think you are talking about Dr. Slawny? Yeah, he was atrocious. Probably one of the worst prof's I've ever had.
Yes! I had both Glanville for chem and Slawny for physics back in the 2000-2002 timeframe. They were top-of-the-list bad. Or bottom-of-the-list. Whichever.
Then I got to have Piilonen for second semester physics, Telionis for statics, and, thanks to being ISE, Torgersen for Theory of Organization.
I think I won in the end.
He also hit a student with his car once. It made the CT.
That he did!
I'll just leave this right here for anyone interested. http://www.collegiatetimes.com/news/article_18c2048e-c11e-5768-86b9-9910...
Slawny! That's the guy.
Glanville was a super nice guy, but that class suuuuuuuuucked. I remember walking back to my dorm after the final and some kid ripped every page out of his book and made them into paper airplanes and threw them out the window.
nope, glanville = worst teacher ever at tech for me. I remember when he came in shit faced one time and asked us all who was going to come watch him play tim currys character in the reenactment of the rocky horror picture show at the lyric. The thought of that man in fishnets.......... that is the stuff of nightmares.
I appreciated him taking groups of students out to Mike's Grill for lunch. But I don't remember learning much chemistry from him.
All I remember from Glanville was when he melted the overhead projector and burned a few ceiling tiles (in the large lecture room in Davidson) with a chemical reaction.
I do remember him talking about taking people to lunch and it always seemed like the same few students. I did become friends with one of his lunch crew later on and he confirmed what most of you have said about Glanville.
The key to Glanville's class was coming to see him during office hours so he could put a face with the name. That pretty much guaranteed a minimum of a C.
I finally found what happened to Zima while at the grocery store today...
Are there any good regional bands that always seem to make their rounds nowadays?
Anyone remember Fighting Gravity or Pat McGee Band?? So many good shows back in my day ('97-'02)....
I remember one night that we refused to pay $10 to see Dave Mathews Band in a fraternity basement. I mean, we had paid $5 the month before, and there was no reason to pay double! It's funny now that we look back on it.
There's a smaller band from Beckley, WV that makes regular trips down to Blacksburg. They're called The Boatmen. They're my favorite group that frequents the area. They describe themselves as "American Soulgrass". Very harmony-driven.
They've not been around quite as much the past few months because one of their members is having a baby and is on hiatus, but I've seen them perform with as few as two of their members to great results.
When they come down, they seem to always be at Franks bar at 622 North.
OAR used to play at TOTS every other weekend it seemed.
