I still think he retires after his championship undefeated season run in 2016.

He's no good to me dead.

I agree, but I like the timing of this to negate some of the uncertainty with recruiting.
Go Whit.

Fantastic news! This will help recruiting greatly.

Top notch.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Great move. No need to have that question lingering over the program.

Smart move by Whit. I don't know that Beamer will coach that long (depends on what happens in the next couple years, which I firmly believe have the potential to be very special), but it's very clear to me that the current administration has just said, "Frank Beamer is going to be our coach until he chooses not to be." Well done and well deserved. Now let's pony up some bonuses for our assistants and I'll be even happier.

This. We all know Torrian Gray is the best at what he does. He makes $216,704 per year. I'd think we'd all agree that he is worth more than this. Moorehead makes $159,000, and he's growing on me quickly. Gray should be addressed soon and Moorehead should be evaluated soon after.

The money's got to come from somewhere before Whit makes it rain all over Merryman. If we had sold out the W&M game, we'd have an additional $200K to put in the bank. How many on here bought a couple of tickets? I bought four. The fans/donors have to step their game up, beyond just talking about it. Whit is a professional businessman who knows that more than just emotion is required to operate a successful athletic department. Gray & Moorehead will get their due, in time. In time.

Good for him and Virginia Tech. I can only hope that we have a great season or by the end we will all be dealing with the 'he is to old and they should not have given him an extension' threads.

After laughing and reaching for the upvote button, I paused for a moment. Eh what the hell. +1.

This was a formality, you can't have a coach recruiting on a contract that expires during the kids time there. So, yes, technically he's under contract until the senior year of the kids we will sign next February.

That doesn't change anything. He could retire at the end of this year or after the Tennessee game in 2016 or at the end of this contract. It's hard to say when that will be, one of the things that would bother me if I was him is that he hasn't clearly identified his successor. To walk away this year and have Whit go hire some rando coach and break up the program would have to be very difficult for Frank.

Well that makes sense for this next year of recruiting, what does he tell the class coming in 2016? Hey, I may not be here after your freshman year and I definitely won't be here your senior year, but come play for me while I'm here and I promise you'll be okay with the next guy?

He's no good to me dead.

But you can make that argument any time, with any program. Contracts will end and people will retire or get fired. How London does what he does is beyond me; that man is a breath away from getting the can.

What's important, I think, for VT at this point in time (as is reflected in the statement in the article) is that (1) there is unified support behind our head coach and (2) look at this shiny practice facility moving forward. This screams to me, "hey recruits in the next couple years, things are GREAT at Virginia Tech!" And they can back it up. It singlehandedly takes away most of the grumblings and suggestions that other programs might use against us. Now, the stage is set to reel in some huge recruits, begetting lots of winning, and then after winning a bunch, the rest takes care of itself, which says "VT is back in a big way and they will have a premiere head coach who will follow in the footsteps of a legend."

one of the things that would bother me if I was him is that he hasn't clearly identified his successor.

I can't think of any situation where identifying a successor has worked out well. I suppose Jimbo/Bobby/FSU (at least it worked out well for Jimbo & FSU), but I don't want to see Beamer disrespected like Bowden. Hopefully Beamer does step down at the right time. I have no doubt that Whit will find a suitable replacement.

As long as its someone who respects Beamer coughBudcough, I don't thin there would be the threat of having Beamer Bowden'd.

Wouldn't have it any other way
