So I'm not sure if anyone has seen this article yet (it was retweeted by one of TKP columnists, I forget whom), but I think it is a very good article on the history and love for college football. It also contains the following passage about Virginia Tech's campus:
Lane Stadium at Virginia Tech looks and feels like stumbling onto a lost set from a Peter Jackson film: gray limestone piled into a turreted fortress teeming with hunting gear-clad bear-men slamming turkey legs into their mouths.
Article: BIG COUNTRY/RUN
WHO WOULD NOT WANT TO GO TO THIS SCHOOL? If not for scholarships I would have ended up at VT instead of Auburn (though I don't mind the two National Championship Game trips in the last few years...).
A couple pictures of campus:

This place really can look like something out of Lord of the Rings sometimes. War Damn Hokie.

Comments
but why War Damn Hokie??? Isn't that a Auburn thing? HokieNation is better IMO.. But Great read for sure!!
It's a personal thing for me, not something I want to start in the community (come to think of it that should have been my username...wasted opportunity). Grew up a Hokie (orange and maroon walls, jerseys, flags, the whole bit), went to Auburn and will forever be pulled in two directions.
If they ever play again in the Peach Bowl or something I may not even watch.
You should ask Joe to change it for you; a couple people on here have changed their usernames.
As you can see, Joe was kind enough to change it for me.
I like it.
Nice!
I know a Hokie that attended VT and then moved to Auburn as a professor. He showed me just how amazingly similar the two schools are, and it raised my previously ignorant perspective of Auburn immensely. Auburn is a beautiful campus that ANY Hokie with an ounce of perspective would love, and the same could be said for Auburn/Opelika vs. Blacksburg. Auburn's a great place & school, and I'm sure you appreciate just how fortunate you are to know the best of both worlds. Leg up for you, and - War Damn Eagle, you Hokie! Be proud of what you are! Every part of it!
damn..I bet you HATE FSU twice as much as all the rest of us
FSU, Bama, UVA, Miami and UGA top my all-time HATE list in no particular order. Arkansas is getting up there because of BERT and his incessant whining.
I was hosting a party at my house with a bunch of Auburn grads for the BCSNCG last year. When Mason scored with like 1:30 or 1:40 left, we all had the same refrain: "We scored too fast". Watching Winston just throw balls up to WR's that were twice as athletic as the Auburn secondary for a drive was heartbreaking. No one talked after that catch in the endzone. Not even the lone Bama fan there (one of my groomsmen) or the girl who hated everything football, but still wanted to be a part of the party.
I remember being pissed after a lot of losses. That one was the most deflating loss in my short fandom of either team.
But why male models?
Spencer is fantastic
This is an awesome piece of trivia.
It makes for a good story, but Bammer has a different tune...
Elephant
(But there are accounts for both stories.)
Funny that I only went to Tech instead of Auburn because Auburn was too far away (in my parents' opinion). WDE.
The other side of the coin, eh? WDE indeed sir.
From what I can tell (and have been told) Auburn is kinda like VT of the South. Instead of grey stone, there's brick. Campuses are both gorgeous. Both started out as ag-focused schools and moved on to engineering (although VT has better engineering department and Auburn has fantastic architecture, nursing, and pharmacology schools - no clue how VT's other departments outside of engineering rank).
War Hokie.
Another leg for you - my buddy referenced above told me that his impression of Auburn was that it was VT, only fifteen years in the past. He didn't mean that as an insult, but rather to describe the overall vibe the town gave (re:economic devopment, etc.) and to consider the development of campus construction, etc. Considering he made it to Auburn about 15 years after leaving VT, I can't imagine a higher compliment he could give.
Ma'am, by the way.
I agree that Tech and Auburn are similar. We both have some sort of bird-related mascot. They're both land grant schools and have grown from that. Though I think the town of Auburn is a bit more substantial beyond the university than Blacksburg is. If Blacksburg and Christiansburg were one town, they would be closer to Auburn. And is Guthrie's still open? That place could fry a chicken.
Guthrie's is still open ma'am. Opelika is a fairly substantial town, which is helped out by the local community college (Southern Union) and the EAMC a bit.
If you ever get a chance to go back, I have to recommend Tacorita. It opened downtown by Mellow Mushroom and does some of the best fried chicken tacos I've had (along with fantastic and varied margaritas).
A great read
Roll Hokies!
Woo Hokie Sooie!
Actually ended up at Auburn as a freshman because of scholarships. Beautiful campus and tradition but the mentality of "if you aint greek, you aint shit" forced me to transfer. Fortunately I found Tech and the rest is history. Still have a great deal of respect for those War Eagles though
That's unfortunate. Never got into the who Greek life scene (fiance was in a sorority for 1 year and quit). It's too bad those were the people you ended up meeting, because most of the people I knew from Auburn while not necessarily being anti-Greek life didn't think there was anything special about paying exorbitant amounts of money for friends.
Really is too bad that that is what you'll remember about your time in Auburn. I don't blame you at all either because all of the frat guys down there can be serious a$$holes.
Also: sorry for putting this back up at the top of the side list on the website. Was politely responding to people who posted 5 days ago.
