Tailgating Tech – Inaugural Blacksburg Edition

Almost there. All.. Most. There..

William and Mary schedule

From the Whit gets it file- Yesterday, Hokie Sports reported the Virginia Tech launched a smartphone app, just in time for the season. We can keep up with the other important scores while watching the game, not the other scoreboard hoping to catch the game info we want. Free, its in the iTunes App store and Google Play. Heres some features

The Virginia Tech Game Day App is packed with robust social, on-campus and stadium features that enhance the game day experience by delivering:
Free live game audio;
Real-time Instagram and Twitter feeds from the team and fans;
The official game-day guide with key times, events and need-to-know information including stadium maps and parking to plan the day;
Enhanced location-aware maps for fans attending both home and away games;
Live Conference and Top 25 scores, real-time stats;
Opt-in alerts for weather updates, pre-game events, play-by-play information and more

Hokie Sports app announcement

Its the first game of the season so, just a few reminders.

Trash Dont forget to bring trash bags and a few extras for those that forgot. Leave the place cleaner than when you arrived. VT has been trying to get a game day recycling program rolling for a couple of seasons now, the sustainability program people tell me they are in need of money to make it a regular program. This year they hope to have a few games with recycling opportunities but, so far they have nothing regular. You can find about 100 fat cans around campus that are essentially solar powered trash compactors with trash on one side and recyclables on the other.

Fire extinguisher Id like to urge everyone to bring a small fire extinguisher, especially if you are cooking at your tailgate. Dont rely on water, if you have grease involved your can cause harm with platter, the hot or buring grease will cause the water to explosively turn to steam and cause bad things.
Get a chemical extinguisher, look for an A,B,C type fire extinguisher. You can normally find them at your local hardware store and sometimes supermarket. $20 cause you never know. Ive seen some now in a simple aerosol can. I know nothing about them, maybe we have an expert among us that can fill us in.
extinguisher

Tent corners weight down the canopy. At the Marshall game last year, lots of canopies were all over the place and destroyed. Weights designed to fit on the feet can be had at your local fan shop.

Canopy weights

I cant vouch for these but they look exactly what Id want. Theyre stackable and put no stress on the legs of the canopy. I would not rely on just 1 in a wind. Remember; do not destroy the parking lot by driving spikes into the pavement. Personally Id select a different, less expensive method such as a heavier kettleball set on the foot and fastened to the post or a weightlifting disk, bucket of sand or water. Repurpose what you have, just keep your canopy from flying.

Stuff you can use
Youve got a plate of food and a beverage but only 2 hands You need a 3rd hand to raise the food to your mouth.
You can wear a good hat and solve the problem

Solution?

Or maybe not.
Try something like this.

Canopy Beer tray

Handy tray that attaches to the legs on your canopy. This particular model has a clamp on either side. Choose one depending on whether your canopy legs are angled or straight. A rubber band slid up the canopy leg or tie in the appropriate spot where you want to position the tray, will help the tray from sliding down the leg.

Stainless Steel (SS) pint glasses Beer can be damaged by light. Glass is less than optimum for walking around a parking lot during the 5th hour of the party and if you are a craft beer fan, you want to drink from other than the bottle or can so you can smell the beer and really enjoy it.
SS pint glass

These are available from various manufacturers as single wall or double wall, with tops and various accessories. SS is durable, but dont leave it in acidic stuff or outside or, it will rust. It inhibits rust but isnt impervious to it. 304 SS is the material you are looking for. BTW, beer is acidic (though it would take many months to even notice), wash them normally when you wash the rest of your stuff. Start at $10 for good ones.

Insulated SS growlers Buying beer by the growler, at the brewery, is the most economical way to buy your beer and, its normally more fresh that way. Rule of thumb is that a growler, that normally holds 4 pints (64 oz) cost the same as 3 pints. With a good cap, even the glass growlers, unopened, the beer will normallystay fresh up to 2 weeks. Stay under a week, if you can, just to be sure. The cap is the key. If you get a cap you like for your glass growler, hang onto it.
Stainless Steel growlers are outstanding, in my opinion. The double wall growlers use air to insulate and will keep your beer cold for a long time. It has the normal benefits of SS and are very durable, useable for hot or cold drinks. Make the good coffee at home and bring a half gallon to setup the tailgate and have some left over for the Irish coffee. Several breweries have these around.

SS insulated growler

Flying Mouse in Trouville (Rt 81 exit 150) has the best price that Ive seen anywhere for these.

FOD (Food Of the Day)
Bacon because Why not?

Pint O' Bacon

Salty, crispy, smokey snack. Or go with pepper bacon or maple syrup bacon or bacon dipped in chocolate.
Friday, put your bacon on a wire rack set it on a baking sheet to catch the grease and into a hot over on low. Let the fat render out. When its given up most of the grease, turn the oven up and cook it to the point of being crisp. Take the whole thing out of the oven, pour off the fat to use for tomorrows breakfast gravy and let the bacon cool. When cool, put it in a ziplock bag and chill it and bring it to the game. To serve, just put out a few pint classes with the stiff bacon sticking out like bread sticks.
BTW, chocolate wont stick directly to bacon when it is hot. Let the bacon cool, then dip it in the warm chocolate. If it still wont stick, sprinkle the bacon with powdered sugar.
If you dont like your bacon cold, toss it on the grill momentarily to just heat it through. Prob'ly best if there's nno chocolate on it at that point.

Whats up with beer brewing near Blacksburg?

Theres only 2 breweries in the immediate environs of the town but theres a lot going on in Virginia taken as a whole.

Bull and Bones Brewhaus and Grill 1470 South Main St. Suite 120 Blacksburg, VA 24060 | Phone: 540-953-BULL(2855) | Email: info@bullandbones.com
http://www.bullandbones.com/
Bull and Bones is a brewpub. They make their own beer as part of a restaurant.
Being in Blacksburg, the beer here is very VT oriented. 2 of the beers are called Lunch Pale Ale and Maroon Effect Ale. They have a total of 7 beers currently and are part of a trend that I like, they have a homemade soda on tap too. They will fill growlers and they have growlers to purchase.
Maroon Effect Ale is commonly seen in local grocery stores and convenience stores in the fall.
Bull and Bones has a full menu, an outdoor eating area, a restaurant side and a pool table side. This is a popular place to go after games.

The River Company Restaurant and Brewery 6633 Viscoe Rd, Radford, VA 24141
Phone:(540) 633-3940
The River Co.
The River Company is a fine restaurant with a nice bar. The food is upscale and well done. I especially like the trout.
The beer. The River Company likes to keep 8 beers available including a seasonal in rotation. The porter and brown I can recommend from here. I see their new seasonal is the Shot Tower Imperial India Pale Ale. Ive not had this, if someone here tries it, give us a review, please.

They will do growler fills and keg purchases. To get a keg from the source (always the best option for fresh beer), go to the website and drop an email. The bottom selection on the home page is for keg fills.

Ive seen the address for The River Company listed as both Fairlawn and Radford so, take your pick.

Egbert, good stuff!

Great write-up, thanks Egbert. I always like seeing your opinion on beers and such. One of these days I'll get back down to the 'Burg. Maroon Effect Ale (my personal favorite at B&B) is calling my name.

"Exit light..."

I recently just tried the Maroon Effect Ale...it is delicious!!

@AMB4VT

pretty sure Egbert needs the Tailgate Guru tag after his name.

Well done sir!!!!!! Thank you for posting.

Tip, for tent weights, we hang 10lb weights from the corners with bungees. Hit a yard sale and pick up the weights cheap.
And remember, no footballs during tailgating.

And from the Hokiesports website, seems like #Whitness likes Skipper!!!!
Skipper 3-2-1
To signify the start of Hokie Village, Skipper will fire 3.5 hours prior to kickoff. Additionally, Skipper will fire when the stadium gates open (2 hours prior to kickoff) and with one hour remaining until kickoff.

That is outstanding.

Fan experience is getting serious attention.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

When Whit said his changes would be incremental, and not earth shattering, this is the type of thing he meant. It's just one small detail, but when you consider it, it makes ALL the sense in the world. ALSO - GAME PROGRAMS ARE FREE TOMORROW! See, he's had someone do a cost-benefit analysis on it, and determined it is worth the investment. Whit's group has made several small changes that all seem so common sense after you hear them. All the small things will add up to a MUCH better game day experience. I love the guy, I just can't express how grateful I am for him being our A.D.

Programs are free all year this year. The Skipper being fired off was actually Desiree's idea. Lots of fun ideas. The "#Hokies" pictures and stuff being put on the main board was fantastic.

I got into the game 30 minutes before kickoff and was unable to find a program. I don't have all these new guys' numbers memorized yet. My memorization sucks.

Skipper could not be heard at all in lot 18. We had noted the time and were waiting. Also, with Skipper's new location it was hard to hear the scoring shot.

I'm not sure but, I think they decreased the amount of powder in the charge they use. It needs to go back up and, if they are going to use the cannon to announce times, it needs to be heard in more than just lots 1, 2 and 5.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Ahhh...have to live the life vicariously now. This post puts a little pain in my heart, though.
Kind of like hearing a great old song, thinking about just how LONG ago it was, then hearing that little clock inside ticking...
Also...what's up with Whit and this app? Does he think VT is an engineering school or something?

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

I want to go ahead and add a few things to this post that I think are really neat. Hokiesports just published this so feel free to check it out, but I'm going to highlight the main things http://www.hokiesports.com/football/recaps/20140829aaa.html

  • Hokie Village will have a live DJ (a Hokie DJ at that) and other Tech athletes as well as inflatables, concessions, and other game sponsors
  • You will hear Skipper more often before the game. He will be fired 3.5 hours before the game when Hokie Village opens, 2 hours before the game when the gates open, and 1 hour before the game begins
  • Concession quality has been improved with new pizza ovens and new items like smoked pork sandwiches and BBQ nachos but prices remain the same
  • A new group of Cadets will help lead many of the traditional cheers, the Hokie Pokie and other things to increase the excitement inside Lane. Look for the Cadets to become more of a signature of VT than just their presence in the endzone.
  • For those interested in the postgame press conference, stay after the game to see it live on HokieVision (the jumbotron)
  • Sorry G.E.R.M.A.N. club, but programs are FREE this year. The MVs will really mean it when they yell "FREE PROGRAMS" as they walk past you on the way to the stadium.
  • There will be live music outside gate 3 two hours before kickoff. Also, the HTs and MVs will both be amplified this year so expect to hear more during the games from both.

You beat me to it. I was just about to post the same thing. I really wish I was going tomorrow, but I'll be down in a few weeks.

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

I have to say that every single one of those things (except the whole MVs being amped thing, which is something I'm waiting to judge once I see how it's implemented) has me very excited. I'll be down for the Western Michigan game to experience all of this for myself.

Oh yeah, I got to check out that link.
There is a lot going on. I'm going to have to plan on getting over towards the stadium just after lunch.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I expect to hear Skipper a lot more DURING the game this year as well.

As a MV alumni, I'm a little upset about the free programs. I feel like our traditions have been undercut... (half sarcastica)

But I think it's a great idea by Whit to do that.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

For those of you who cannot live without your phones, I would recommend investing in a portable battery to recharge your phone. If you are on your phone at all during tailgating + the game and the phone is struggling for a signal, you'll probably drain it by the time the game is done.

EasyAcc EasyAcc 10000mAh Brilliant Ultra Slim Dual USB (2.1A / 1.5A Output) Portable Power Bank External Battery Charger has the capacity to charge your phone 3-6 times (depending on your phone). It can also charge 2 phones at once.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51m%2BFoL7CLL._SL1500_.jpg

Or for a slimmer version, you can use the Anker 2nd Gen Astro Mini 3200mAh Ultra-Compact Portable Charger which would give you approximately one full charge.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61F6umVcvEL._SL1500_.jpg

Now you can keep in touch with everyone after the game to see if they are meeting at Hokie House or Sharkey's.

Seriously, how did people meet up with others before cell phones? It boggles me these days.

I use a portable solar panel to keep my phone going as I stream music for tailgating festivities.

EDIT: Here's the panel I use. It's got straps that you can use to attach it to bags and things as well if you're a hiker.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Great post! Beer, Bacon, Breweries, Hokie Football - my kind of read and weekend!

The Game Day app is awesome - hats off to Whit for that one!

I've got my Flying Mouse growler filled with Soaring Ridge's Trailhead Nut Brown. Ready to go!

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I had to go and look that up, sounds good. :-)

Soaring Ridge is doing some great things (as are all of the breweries in the Roanoke area). It also happens to be about 3 blocks from my work, makes for a nice wind-down after work.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I will probably be stopping by today to fill a growler with the Trailhead as well.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Tent corners weight down the canopy. At the Marshall game last year, lots of canopies were all over the place and destroyed. Weights designed to fit on the feet can be had at your local fan shop.

When I was a student, we never had a tent for our tailgates. We finally got one...for the Texas A&M game. In a hurricane. It did not survive.

"We were at the pinnacle, and we did it for years," Foster says. He pauses, nods, takes a deep breath. "And I did it with the best guy in the business."

We'll be rolling into town hopefully between 11 and 12. I'm worried there won't be any grassy spots left around the Price's Fork lots. I thought the rule was you couldn't set a tent up in a parking spot, has that changed? If so, I'm definitely gonna pick up some of those weights and wont be sweating a thing on the way down.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

The official rule is to not extend out of your parking space but, effectively, it's don't block traffic and don't damage the lot.
Things may change with the local rule enforcement but, if you aren't causing trouble and are courteous, it should not be a problem, especially if you can overhang your vehicle a little and aren't infringing.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Why no turkey legs as gameday food?

EDIT: Awesome article, Tailgate Guru!

FOD is meant to perhaps introduce a new idea that's not too common yet.
Perhaps turkey legs would have been good as the intro post but, hindsight..... It'll git after ya.

I buy my turkey legs in the stadium. Which will be open 2 hours prior to kickoff this year. Too bad you can't go in and bring it out to Hokie Village. Perhaps they'll have a vendor outside this year as part of the festivities.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

If the turkey leg vendors sold outside the stadium, their sales would be ridiculous!

Sounds like a suggestion to #Whitness.
It will evolve this year, I'm sure. Again, thank you for the great write up!
I'll be down there for the Canes visit in October.

Two new concessions servings - BBQ sandwiches & BBQ nachos. Also, the pizza ovens are supposed to be upgraded on the East Side.

On your recommendation, I've been enjoying my frosty adult beverages in a double-walled stainless steel tumbler.

I feel sad that I have wasted much time on hyper-optimal temperature beer when they could have all been cold.

Yeah buddy.
Those things work much better than one might anticipate.

Maybe one of these I'll discuss the physics on why they work so well.

Those things are durable too.

This is going to be great for the ACC.
