Picked up a bottle of Four Roses Small Batch for the first couple of weeks of the 2014 season (with the occasional Basil Hayden). Last year was Bulleit. Hopefully both the bourbon and football will be spectacular.

The play-calling when we're knocking on the door is very frustrating. Pounding JC into the strongest part of their defense is not a winning strategy.

Seriously this. I have yet to see Shane make the tough decision on a proper running back rotation. Sure JC has been here longer but having that kind of loyalty to a player doesn't make sense when you have more talented backs ready to go.
I have a friend who attended USC and when we took Shane, he said thanks man, I appreciate that. When he spoke those words, I never again felt good about that move. I still don't.
Especially since Marshawn and Shai have shown to be more powerful runners. If they want to run JC they should be exploiting the edge.

What Moorehead said ended in "fade", which is exactly what Brewer was looking for, Bucky on the fade route. I do not know if I like a cameraman and microphone in a huddle when they are calling plays.
I like the move by Brewer to avoid pressure, but why we didn't have Juice or Shai out there is very confusing to me.

The OL play is really leaving something to be desired. Also, I'm not sure JC should be getting carries over Shai and Marshawn.

Rules state that if you use any party of the players helmet to bring the player down, it is a face mask.
QB tried to duck the tackle. Dadi didn't grab any part of his helmet. But if you have a loose helmet, you may just get that call every play.

Two years ago I think someone complained about JC Coleman during the Austin Peay game and got massive downvotes. His analysis wasn't that far off looking at it now.
I thought it would take me at least 3, maybe 4 games to be done with him.

huge key there was Cam Phillips a Freshman WR getting in the way so shai could sneak by for the TD's. Its amazing how a blocking WR can help spring a play for a TD. Also there is nothing sexier than Sam Rogers leading the way with a huge block

We should be happy how we look but we need to caution our enthusiasm by remembering who the opponent is. That said, who is not happy so many 1st year players are looking so good?
That's my biggest takeaway from today. The future is extremely bright. I don't know how this team will stack up against anOSU or conference opponents, but things are looking great for the next couple of years.

we've seen this weekend several FCS teams beat FBS teams, plus William & Mary has a recent history of being a very capable team (especially on defense) I think our offense is greatly improved this year, looking forward to how they match up against OSU
Agreed. But this is also one of the better FCS teams out there. I seem to recall standing in the rain, east stands, absolutely perplexed as JMU fans were going nuts. I hate to bring it up, it pains me dearly but here is my point: We never let W&M feel like they were in this game...We did it with convincing offense and adequate, yet improving, defense. Yes you read that correct, offense won this game and defense kept it out of reach. Is it a div. 2 team? Yes, but did we look better and more convincing than we have than in the past 3-4 years? absolutely.
I used to get so tired of all the wins that felt so empty, as if they were so close to losses. Today was a win, and it wasn't luck, it wasn't close, it wasn't undeserved. I love it.
Totally agree with your comments. Definitely felt like a convincing win where our offense made me feel that they had the game under control. Brewer certainly is poised, from his interviews to his play. It's going to be really fun watching all of these new guys grow this year!

I am sure we have saved some of our playbook. We have thrown 1 seam route to a TE and I think that will be a staple of our offense this year. We haven't stretched the field at all really

I say that tongue-in-cheek. I am thrilled with how he ran today, but he did tear his ACL less than a year ago. As good as he was today, it's not crazy to think he might gain even more quickness/explosiveness.

That looked like an offense that knew what it was doing. Thinking we played some base defenses, but I will let French tell me what I think later this week (I hope). Good win with few mistakes, but still some wrinkles to iron out on both sides of the ball, excited to see young players really stepping up when called upon.
A lot of good to be taken from this game.

ESPN's box score has Travon McMillian having 1 reception for 24 yards. Did we play him today??
ESPN also showed Derrick Hopkins returning a kickoff last year during their Gamecast. Take their instant stats with a grain of salt. I don't recall seeing him on the field or hearing his name, but I could have missed it; still getting used to all the new numbers.
EDIT: Hokiesports.com does not list McMillian in any stats, so I suspect ESPN is wrong.
ESPN has some of the jersey #s wrong, they have Phillips as #25 which may be the problem

Not going to lie that was the first game in a while when I see a VT QB go back worried that I am about to witness a interception. I have hope in Michael Brewer, he is a real QB with real weapons. Ladies and Gentlemen buckle your seat belts next week is going to be interesting!!!

Except for the tipped pass, I thought he was pretty smart with his throws.
Since Tyrod (the later years) I have always been worried when we passed. Brewer is the real deal and I always look forward to what he is going to do when he drops back (or runs with it)
Loved Brewer's play. Smart, not trying to do much. He took the plays that were available, and when nothing was available, he threw it away instead of taking the sack. He was quick, he was decisive, and for the large part, he was very accurate. He doesn't have the physical tools that Logan had, but he seems like a much, much more polished passer. That INT was more on the offensive line not staying engaged than Brewer throwing a bad pass.
I am a happy Hokie today.

- loved the pace of the offense and early play calling.
- Brewer is a composed cat and looked very comfortable running the O. I feel like he's got a really high ceiling for such a newbie in the system.
- OL looked like a first game OL, especially early. They will come around.
- LBs we're suspect early, but really rounded into form as the game progressed. Would like to see a little more from Chase early, but he came up big in the 2nd half.
- Shai struck me with how decisive he was with his cut...and that's a bonus with a freshman RB. He's got an attitude and I like it! Marshawn looked more the part of a freshman in his first game, but he's got a high ceiling. The running game could get filthy once Trey gets back to 100% and we have the luxury of bringing fresh legs (with different skill sets) in on every down.
- Bucky is going to be a matchup problem for a lot of opponents. Love his combo of athleticism and height on the outside.
Haven't felt this good about an opening performance in a while, regardless of opponent. Long way to go and a lot of details to clean up, but a great start for a team that is young and growing. Gobble gobble!
So I only got to watch the end of the third quarter and the fourth, but it was pretty cool to sit down at the bar and immediately see Shai run it in for a TD. Made a sucky day of moving not seem so bad

I know we just beat Bill and Mary but I think we could be really good this year. Just wanted to say that. I am tired of everyone saying OSU will be undefeated in a few weeks. I think we can win Saturday.
This may have been said elsewhere, but no huddle...no, that wasn't my point. A comfortable, unforced, up tempo, no huddle. I was excited about this, scared like hell, but excited. I know the program Brewer came out of, but VT making a no huddle look relatively clean was exciting.
Added to that: Not the crazy no-huddle of yester-year where the QB runs up under center, calls a cadence, then steps back and looks to the sideline for the play.
That seriously shook my confidence every time I saw it.
FYI, the receiver who got hurt during W&M's first drive broke his leg. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers!
Something that makes me feel really, really good about our offensive production yesterday, and more OK with the first - game mistakes, is that except for Coleman, Byrn and Stanford, every single other major contributor was playing his first game at his position. This team could be pretty darn good down the road.

It's stupid but I am pretty sure they base that off of conference record and until then, it is just random order.
I thought so, too, but when the Atlantic shows up correctly, it's really weird. I thought maybe it would go alphabetically at least if the records are the same.
Not only that, but Yahoo and I'm sure most places have it in the correct order. It just doesn't sit right until LOLUVA is in their correct place at the bottom.
It's UVA logic: If the team we lost to was better than the team you beat, clearly we are better and deserve a higher spot in the ACC standings.
Of our running backs, Marshawn has a lot of power and a lot of push to get up the middle. Shai has vision. There was one run I remember where he had two holes, and was able to see the safety running up toward the hole he was about to take, and then shifted to the other hole and got more yards. I'm very excited about these two.
JCC has no business running in the middle. At best, he's an off-tackle/sweep guy with his speed, but has no power to push and always seemed to fall backwards when running up the gut.
I know it's W&M, but seeing almost 500 yards of offense from this team is encouraging.
Oh, and another thing....HOW THE HELL DID THAT KICK NOT GET BLOCKED? HE WAS RIGHT THERE!

Looked to me like he got there so fast he left the ground too early. Can you tackle the kicker before he kicks it?!?
You can't tackle the kicker, he never gains possession of the ball. If he does, then he's no longer a kicker but a runner. If you block the kick you can contact him in any way that's not malicious.
You can tackle the holder if he has possession of the ball when you tackle him.
For those of you who missed the game or were in a state of excessive drunkenness, the game is being replayed on comcast sports network at 1 today. Should be a great chance to get a second look.
