The Future is Bright, Friends.

McKenzie, Williams, Ford, Hodges, Phillips, Fuller, Facyson etc etc etc are ALL underclassmen. The future is very bright. And in my opinion, so is this season. Vanilla Vick played outstandingly today. Defense gave up a few big plays but didn't give up a touchdown. Solid play from a number of guys on the offense.

Long story short -- HOW ABOUT THEM HOKIES!

LET'S BEAT THE PANTS OFF THE BUCKEYES.

Now we get to wring our hands and hit F5 for another whole week. Is it Saturday yet?

488!
That's combined yardage of two games last year.
(I know, I know. W&M aint OSU)

And the balance of the stats was what me happy. Over 200 rushing, over 250 passing. That kind of balance, with those type of numbers, is what I wanna see every week.

I'm very confident for next Saturday after seeing what Navy did to the Buckeyes on the ground today. Juice and Shai need to be the one-two punch against ANOSU as they have the swag and talent to lead us to the upset. Brewer and the passing game can seemingly only get better and better with our receiving corp built Ford tough, also Bucky being 8 feet tall helps!

Not so sure about that. OSU appeared to be thrown off by the triple option and their offense sputtered early. However, they found their groove late. Barrett completed 80% of his passes for two TDs and led his team in rushing. He may not be Braxton Miller, but he's no chump, and Foster has had problem's with dual-threat QBs in the past (Brett Hundley, CJ Brown, Raheem Cato, Marquise Williams). It will be a good test for sure.

Cmon...he threw all of 15 passes -- one of which was 80 yards to a guy who was barely covered. That was among the fewest in all of the FBS last week. So if by "dual" threat you mean any QB is capable of throwing a forward pass, I suppose he is a dual threat. But who isn't?

...and if I remember correctly, I think I read that he was their leading rusher with 50 yards. We need to get in his face early and often, get him flustered, and let DBU come to life as he just chunks it to avoid getting crushed by the Hokie pass rushers.

Their o-line really struggled, especially early on, and their linebackers and safeties played rather poorly. Looked like our game against GT in 2009.

Not coincidentally, those are the weaknesses of their team, along with not really having many/any proven wide receivers. Devin Smith (who caught the 80-yard bomb) is good at running deep routes, but that seems to be about it.

I sure Hope Shane Beamer Uses his best two RBs next week ! And it's not JC , only thing I seen wasted yesterday by VT, Not using their best and getting them playing Time. Great Game other than that.

Jack R.

I think Shai will move up to #2 on depth chart but am still betting JCC starts against tOSU; however, Shai will get significant amount of carries.

One of the responsibilities of being in charge is making the tough decisions, I don't have a problem with JC starting against OSU but he should have a very short leash. Truthfully, it might be best for him to start the opening series because there might be some nerves with the freshmen. Long term Shane must put the best players on field.

One of the responsibilities of being in charge is making the tough decisions...

This is really where we are right now. This decision will tell us more about Shane's ceiling as a coach, than J.C.'s as a RB.

Shane has spent quality time in the SEC. He has seen first-hand that productivity trumps seniority on teams vying for championships.

J.C. is a great team player, but he is also a fierce competitor. You have to suspect he is conflicted about taking carries that other backs could do more with. But you could never want him to make the decision that Shane should make.

Sometimes, being in charge means finding the way to tell someone that their best was not good enough, and that while they aren't going to have the role they used to have, it's no reflection on them as a person.

I think starting JCC for the OSU game, and even for most/all of the season would be great. This team is severely lacking in upperclassmen leadership, especially on offense. I say start him, give him 5-8 touches, and work the freshmen in more and more. At any rate, we really do need some leadership on offense, and JC is one of the very few guys who can provide that at this point.

Well that's a name I haven't seen on here in a while. How've you been T_Mobile?

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

I've been offline almost all summer, but I'm doing great, especially after that game yesterday! How about yourself, Beard?

Well as you can see someone finally got a decent picture of me. Reached 1K legs over the summer which was great. I've also taken every opportunity to point out UVA's inferiority to everyone around me. Other than that, I'm fairly excellent myself after that romp yesterday. Now I'm doing my best not to get too carried away thinking about beating anOSU next week.

That's good. You need grease from turkey legs to nourish your luscious brown fibers and keep them in top beard condition.

The coaching staff got it right by converting bucky Hodges to TE.
The weakest link is Shane insisting JC is the number 1 Rb.

I agree. I think that JCC will still get the start next week, but like this week will not get the majority of the playing time. Shai and Williams will carry the load. Especially if they're given the chance to "get hot" which seems to be the buzz word in our coaching staff.

I thought he did not like vanilla Vick nickname? We have to come up with something more creative, I mean his name is brewer and beer is awesome so...
I liked how we moved the ball yesterday though too many penalties (really wang you are a 6th year senior!) and a few turnovers are worrisome going into the horseshoe. I give us a punchers chance of pulling it off as long as we can contain their big plays and limit our own mistakes (your welcome Captain Obvious)

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

I think HokieKnight came up with Brew Wrangler. Some players call him Texas

Not really a fan of either of those names. We can do better I think.

I like Murder Panther 5000.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

This gets my vote.

My girlfriends brother will be happy to hear Hokie Nation loves his cats name

So instead of calling him Vanilla Vick I'm just gonna leave out the first part and call him Vick. Makes me feel better, I think I'm in 1999 again.

Oh, I didn't know he wasn't a fan. Texas is good. Or, a good name for the offense as a whole that I came up with: The Brew Crew.

I think we should start calling the offense The Brew Crew

Connecting vanilla and brew, the Underground in Blacksburg had an excellent vanilla porter, which they no longer carry. :( I don't remember the brewery, but does anyone know what I'm talking about and if/where it's on tap elsewhere in town?

The Breckenridge Vanilla Porter?

Don't care what the conversation is about, anything by Breck Brewery gets a leg from me. LOVE that place. Mountain is meh, but the town and brewery are fantastic!

Breckenridge Brewery's Vanilla Porter is one of my favorites. Was it that?

I do believe that's it. Do you or ashore (or anyone, really) know where it can be found on tap in Blacksburg?

The thing with bars is that they rotate taps so much.
It is tough to know what any bar has at any time.
They tend to rotate out the tap as soon as they roll through a keg or 2, especially something as uncommon as that beer.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Yeah, it's a shot in the dark, but ya never know.

I've seen it at Franks (622 North) and the Rivermill on more than a few occasions. Try there first.

Isaiah Ford looked looked so surprised by his touchdown catch. You could tell how happy he was.

Was it just me, or did it seem like any time Isiah Ford was open, he was completely, and totally alone on the field. Not even running a route. Just standing there. Waiting.

Finding holes in the zone. Brewer has the touch to fit it into those spaces, something Logan never really developed when he was here.

Rip his freaking head off!

The new #alwaysopen?

Nah, that's still Byrn and Malleck while we have them.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Well, it's 7:45am on Labor Day, and Ford, Byrn, Malleck, and Hodges are all still open.

never forget danny coale :'(

Jeeze guys, he just graduated. He didn't die.

Also, I wasn't saying Ford replaces Danny by any stretch. My favorite moment as a Hokie fan was the huge catch against Nebraska.

Mine was the game winning catch against Michigan.

It could be worse.

That's true too.

Reminder, we were playing a 1-AA team.

So were Syracuse and NC State.

And Iowa State, but, uh, yeah.

He had the world's most boring touchdown catch, photography wise. The celebration after was where it's at.

Ford really disappointed me there. Should have jumped up, hung from the cross-post by his knees, and then caught the ball.

(Could you imagine how awesome the game would be if you could use props? Ladders & Chairs match with Miami, anyone?)

Seriously though, I'm sure he doesn't mind that his first TD was so easy. And I sure don't. How many easy TD's have been straight dropped by VT receivers over the years? How many just thrown in the dirt or over the head?

As mundane as that was, I get the feeling we'll be seeing plenty of highlight-of-the-game worthy catches over the next couple seasons between him and the Brewed. *

And that makes me very very happy.

* (Is that something for a nick? He's kinda got that laid back spirit of the Dude. Maybe? No? Eh, I tried.)

How about "Not Brew Carrey" because it's not an offense where everything's made up and the points don't matter? (Like it used to be...)

That was my favorite play all game.

Ford was running his route, saw the breakdown in coverage, adjusted and called for the ball. His catch was underrated too, sometimes those wide open catches are tough to make because you overthink or choke. The freshman didn't do that.

Secondly, Brewer. That entire play. Pushed out of the pocket and kept his eyes downfield the entire time and put the ball right in Ford's chest. Logan last year would've tried to run for the endzone, gotten tackled inside the 5 and we would've gone three and out and kicked a field goal. That calm, cool, collected pass first mindset is a huge change.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

@VTimHokie85

I've only been here since 2009, so does anyone else remember a time when people were this stoked about the future of the program/the offense? Have we ever had kids like Bucky, Brewer, Shai, Williams, Ford, Conte, Teller, and Phillips all take the field for the first time at once?

Well it was pretty exciting when Tyrod, Coale, RMFW, David Wilson, Boykin, etc... were there but they weren't necessarily highly touted or making their first starts at the same time.

I remember being pretty excited about Eddie Royal, Josh Morgan and that 04-07 receiving corps. I think I'm more excited about these guys now though.

Agreed, 2004, as far as WR goes. Entire group was FR, except Clowney was a SO I think. Bryan Randall was mobile enough, but could really hit those guys deep. If a few "that close" moments had made it to the endzone, we wouldn't be talking about Auburn getting cheated.
