Being in love with Hokie football used to mean something. We were never expected to dominate all of college football, if we were ever to win a national title it would be by the skin of our teeth not the force of our reputation. And we liked it that way. Those were the feast or famine years of the lunch pail defense and a Buffalo Church offense (every play was based on a wing and a prayer).
Now, with some new coaches settling in, a new athletic director, and lots of young talent emerging all over our team, we have to step back and ask what are we left with? The answer may be as terrifying as you can imagine. Yesterdays game saw an offensive line that didnt allow a single sack, a quarterback that was poised and efficient, and more than one freshman stepping up to contribute in big ways.
Whats more is that we saw this against a ranked opponent. Sure, some may argue that they are an FCS team but what does that really mean? Id be willing to bet they could still beat the pants off of 90% of other countries Olympic teams in a real American football game. Take that information back into your kitchen and you start to realize what that ranking is worth: They may just be serving salad, but their salad has fried onions on it while we are still trying to use radish slices to garnish our plates with less competency than a five year old picking daisies instead of tending goal in her youth soccer league.
This all boils down to the fear that we may have a competent, even world beating, offense. Like I said, being in love with Hokie football used to mean something and this is not it. With Alabama having hired Lane Kiffin to manage their inevitable decline and a good new fashioned play-off system in effect, the path to the top of college football has never been clearer for the Hokies. I, for one, am petrified of our future. Are you?

Dude, we just beat William. and. Mary. We haven't even played against a team that could possibly finish it the upper half of the FBS yet. It's a little premature to be scared of being the next NCAAF dynasty and becoming jaded by winning too much like we're Alabama fans or something.
Edit: Nevermind the OP's post is sardonic.
yea, really wish we could use comic sans as our sarcasta font
You would think that a username like terriblemetaphorguy would be enough of a hint, even if one did not know of his history in Andy Bitter's live-chats.
i don't know if im scared of the future, but after reading this I sure am hungry.
That'll happen. If it wasn't clear by the name, I try to describe the world with the least apt comparisons I can find. Somehow that often ends up being food.
Is this terriblemetaphorguy from Bitter's live chats?
Because if so, Bravo sir.
And welcome home, to TKP!
Indeed, work has made it hard to show up for those in a long time.
I figured here was an easier way to contribute.
The first time I heard it, I thought maybe Terriblemetaphoreguy invented the term pussy touchdowns.
But the real story was actually better, BTW.
Here's to being in utter gaseous agony from that frenched onion covered salad smeared with organic buttermilk and cracked black pepper.
I'm not familiar with the story and I love the term. How did it start?

And now I have done learned something today. Thank you for helping me push my hour hand to beer'o'clock, sir.
prepare to be amazed
EDIT: I'm an idiot
I'm just glad TerribleMetaphorGuy has more chances to contribute than a once a week Live Chat. Welcome, sir. I for one will be cooking with radishes tomorrow night.
Heck of a lot easier to do this than to try and make a live chat with my phone on the road.
Huge fan of your work, by the way. I'm at WFU doing a Master's now, let me know when you are writing their "Foe"Rensics and I can give you the low down on BBQ in Winston-Salem and the surrounding area.
You must spend a lot of time at Foothills. I would.
Honestly? No.
Beer is decent and food is sub par for what Winston-Salem offers. Everything is also mildly overpriced. It is worth the occasional trip but it is not a regular hang out spot for me anymore. If you are ever in town, hit me up on twitter and I can recommend some other places for food or drink.
Tate's
Shoot! I was just there yesterday!
We now have #SOURCES
Well yeah. If you can decipher them.
You should probably relay his review verbatim, then offer a translation for the metaphor-impaired.
there are still several question marks, and we need to see how VT looks against OSU before we start getting carried away... the first half was very close, W&M was able to move the ball a little easier than I was expecting, and as good as Brewer looked the offense still has some question marks - most notable is RZ/goal line.. I'm curious if some of it was bland signal calling in lieu of the big game next week, I guess we'll see soon enough
I chalked it up to the first game of the season with a stack of freshman and new new here, new new there, everywhere a new new.
The takeaway is that we got lots of red zone practice that showed improvement later in the game.
I think the main point here is that a victory over W&M cannot be dismissed simply because they are an FCS team. Most are not doing this, but the temptation remains. Transitive comparisons are fraught with peril, but if you want to dismiss yesterday's O progress anyway ask yourself this: What exactly did we learn about OSU's offense playing the Navy D?
Ah, TMG is finally on BOTH of the blogs I follow.
Appreciate the VT backup over on CSR!
