Coach Urban Meyer plans to expand his playbook when the Hokies play the Buckeyes on Saturday.

A game that was going to be challenging just got more difficult. Knowing Frank Beamer and his coaching staff , the young Hokies team will be ready to compete against a really good Ohio State team.

"Meyer admitted that the Buckeyes had a vanilla game plan and indicated that perhaps it was too conservative."
I'm calling BS.... easy for him to say that now after his team struggled for almost the whole game against Navy.
Here is some Vanilla for him...
Lets give him some of our own Vanilla plan...Vanilla Vick.
He would support the U

We have a vanilla game plan ourselves this week Urban... Vanilla Vick that is!
Those are some mighty big shoes to fill...
Sounds like the community doesn't care whether or not Brew doesn't wanna be referred to as nilla Vick.
Just watched a lot of this game. Looked pretty vanilla to me. Urban Meyer would not be Urban Meyer if he wasn't holding a few cards close to his vest before the biggest game on the schedule until the middle of October.
On the flip side, I thought the Hokies showed a lot of their cards on offense. Defense looked pretty vanilla. The chess match next week will definitely be between Coach Foster and Coach Meyer.
You must not have read the earlier write-up on the offense and how we barely even dipped into our playbook...
Does that mean this week we'll be fully dipped?
To be honest, I think we are slowly going to uncover new facets of the offense all week long. We should be fully dipped in the NCG game.
I'm pretty sure Loeffler is going to pull out some dork magic this week...so yeah I think we'll be fully dipped on Saturday. Can't wait to experience it in person.
our coaches said we used a simple gameplan after our game, in which we scored 34 points against a lesser opponent.
We'll be expanding our playbook too, methinks.
It's so nice to say that and mean it
Well, my guess is that anOSU had to limit the playbook to work the new QB into the offense. It would make sense that he would have an expanded play list to work from in game 2. I'm sure that the fact they have a freshman QB isn't lost on Bud.
If I understand correctly, Braxton Miller was out for all of spring ball so JT Barrett took plenty of first team reps at that point. Barrett also redshirted last year, so I'm not sure I'm buying that Barrett wouldn't have a good enough grasp on the playbook that Meyer had to keep the plays "vanilla." Actually, Brewer has had far less time with our playbook than Barrett has with OSU's. Not to mention the outcome of OSU's game was hardly assured until very late in the game. Personally I tend to think Meyer is making an excuse for why they didn't blow out Navy (setting the stage for why they deserve to be ranked #5).
agree and with the playoff system, can you argue with the guy? should OSU blow the rest of their schedule away, the talking heads will have something to debate if it comes down to the wire and the Navy game comes up in discussion.
ps. we might whoop that OSU ass so it's a moot point until the fat lady sings.
If OSU wins out, there's no way they wouldn't make a 4 team playoff. A close game with Navy won't mean a thing.
You will not find 4 other undefeated teams from the Big 5.
I would argue that, but I think you're right. I don't think anyone from the Pac-12 is invincible, and my money's also on the SEC having a 1-loss champion.
For what it's worth, I don't have Ohio State winning out either, regardless of what happens this weekend.
If we don't beat anOSU, someone will. If I had to bet money, I'd say Mich. St. At the very least I would expect us to expose a weakness of theirs which will help aid some other team to beat them.
After getting burn by several dual threat Qbs last year, Bud Foster will expand his package too for JT. Its gonna be a closer game than the mass media thinks.
Honestly Barrett's has shown nothing thus far to indicate that he's anymore of a "dual threat" QB than Vad Lee or Josh Nesbit...
agree. A braxton miller led group doesn't come close to the tight game that OSU experienced last week. The only reason I EVER believed we would have more than a hard time against OSU is because that kid is supremely talented at the college level.
I think I speak for a lot of folks when I say I LOVE seeing any Hokie D against a newbie qb who isn't terribly mobile.....and don't forget about Brewers legs. Guys has already proven he can turn nothing into something.
I wouldn't call Nesbitt a dual-threat QB. He couldn't pass.
Exactly. That was my point. Neither was a dual threat and Jarrett hasn't shown that he is much different from those two.
Josh Nesbitt was much better than Vad Lee.
That man was a hoss. Has all my respect.
Barrett looks to be somewhere in between.
Didn't Nesbitt get arm ripped out by former #DBU grad Davon Morgan after an INT in the revenge game in '10??
The one thing I saw Saturday that concerned me was Dadi running past the QB on a few pass plays. James Gayle doing that is what absolutely killed us against mobile QBs last year (not Bud's scheme or anything else. The DE lost contain). I really, really hope Wiles gets that corrected, or there could be a ton of space for Barrett to take off around the edge of our defense.
Was thinking the same thing. Dadi is a beast but the one thing that worries me the most this season about our D is watching mobile qbs run all over us again.
Proposal: Use Dadi as a QB spy. He's incredibly fast and could probably close on Barrett before he gets to the edge on a scramble.
Problem: DE depth is lacking. So putting Dadi in a spy role where he would be similar to a LB would take a capable player off the field such as Clarke, Williams, RVD, or DiNardo and put someone with less experience in at DE.
Foster has a better plan. We just dont know it yet.
I've seen packages where, using a normal alignment, a DE would spy and a LB would replace him as a rusher. It'd be a new wrinkle that a brand-new QB wouldn't be ready for.
And besides seeing Julius Peppers do that in his day, it's worked wonders for me on Madden.
This is what I was saying, but I didn't really articulate it.
Fair enough. I just don't know if we have someone at LB who would have the size to come off the edge and challenge a OT. Unless a DT stunted outside and Williams came down the middle in his gap. Guess we'll just have to see what actually happens.

That was not necessary.
That's a top ten gif right there, lol.
And sorry to offend with the Butthead post. I just go there whenever, I see certain phrasing...
you know, like Butthead does. I'll try to show more restraint in the future.
Seriously though that thing was terrifying
Uhhh, Heh, Heh...Heh, Heh... You said restraint.
Right....I think OSU might be able to keep it close.
Just read the article. This stuck out to me:
While it's true that we play very, very hard, I hope that they continue to think we aren't overly complicated. If I remember correctly, French has pointed out before that our D quite often cloaks our coverages, and doesn't give away what we're doing so easily. So, with a freshman QB, and a still yet-to-gel OL, I'm sure Bud is going to complicate things a bit for them.
I too noticed that quote and bristled at it slightly. I don't know if it's fair to call our defense super complex, but I never would have thought a coach would say it's not overly complicated...It sounds a bit like a back-handed compliment to me and I hope Bud posts that up as bulletin board material and tears them up with all kinds of stunts and blitzes and coverages
Yeah, that comment was confusing to me. I would say that Tech has one of the top 5 most complicated defenses in CFB. Between the array of blitzes, stunts and slants, and coverage schemes, Bud tends to throw more looks at an offense than most. Some of those looks aren't seen terribly often in college anymore, especially some of the 46 stuff. Certainly gives folks a lot to think about.
That being said, there is very little new under the sun in football. It's largely about execution and adjustment.
Freshman QB and a coach who thinks Bud's defense isn't complicated?
Oh I hope wipe that smug grin off Meyer's cocky face
Reading that 11 Warriors site is tough. They really don't have much respect or us. I can't wait for this game. I pray we win.
Agreed. I have jumped on there a few times to see how they feel about the game, were just another Saturday to them.
I have to add that winning this game would be extra sweet as Urban Meyer is one coach who I absolutely loathe in college football. The guy "retired" from Florida to spend more time with his family (literally talked about missing seeing his daughters grow up and how he could be there for them now) only to come out of retirement a year later when the OSU job opened up. He oozes that smug, jackass demeanor of someone who is quicker to make excuses than believe he could possibly be outcoached. I can't debate that Meyer is an elite coach, as he's had tremendous success everywhere he has been, but he's that guy who you take a little extra pleasure in shutting up because you know it will haunt him.
Urban Meyer always reminded me of Mike Kryzewski. Their personalities both seem a good bit of smugness, bordering on arrogance, cloaked with some condescension. While pretending to remain polite. We've got all the motivation we need to beat OhState, but disliking their coach always helps.
He's a sleazier Lane Kiffin?
This is simply impossible.
Here's an average pic of Kiffin.
The man simply oozes sleaze. Just about every time you see him, you can tell he's lying about something. Most of all, he's lying to himself if he believes he has any kind of coaching talent.
I have no idea what Saban was thinking. I'd say it was for his recruiting "skills", but Saban really doesn't need any help there.
He's really a disgusting individual. I mean, look at this behavior!
Smdh. Little something for da ladies?
Of course they're going to add plays. Every team adds plays to their playbook every week. That's called preparing a gameplan for your opponent...
This game is going to be real tough for this young defense. We'll learn how disciplined they are. Facyson definitely needs to have a better game, or he'll get burned by the OSU athletes.
If anyone thinks VT's D is going to dominate, simply look at how the Hokies did against athletic QBs last year:
Marshall 21 pts
UNC 17 pts
UMD 21 pts (in regulation)
UCLA 42 pts
OSU is more on the UCLA level than Marshall, UNC, or UMD. It's fair to think OSU will get at least 21 points from their offense. Let's just hope the Hokies can match.
Agreed, if we can hold OSU to 21 points then I will have a darn good feeling about this years defense.
I have a good feeling about our defense every year. This year is different though. Our D is going to be made so much better by a good VT offense.
you have a point but I think Hokies' D is faster and more athletic to face dual threat QB than last year. I doubt OSU scored 42 points against Tech.
Maybe faster, but definitely more naive due to new faces.
OSU will score 42 if VT turns the ball over like VT did against UCLA... That 2nd half was atrocious. Like I said, I think OSU will get around 21 from their offense, maybe a little more. Turnovers or special teams could turn this game ugly, in either direction.
Lord, don't let Brewer get hurt...
we'd also have to think based on last weeks performance that VT won't be throwing pick 6s and committing multiple turnovers.. giving our D a chance with a full field behind them.... it's hard to compare stats from one year to the next
Using your logic, then why would you think our D is just as good as last years? Last year, VT had an amazing D, I really doubt this team's D will be as good. I sure as hell hope they are, but I find it difficult to think that the D will be as good with the amount of turnover and loss of good players. OSU will be a really good test, and we'll find out how good this D could be in 2014.
I never compared this years D to last years, only was suggesting that it is easier to keep the other team out of the end zone when they have to go 80 yards instead of 20... and yes I am more concerned about how W&M rushed against us in the first quarter of last weeks game than I am about how mobile QBs hurt us last year
Fair enough, I kinda throw any game against an FCS team out the window. Knowing the players that struggled against mobile QBs last year (i.e. Dadi Nicolas) and Bud's scheme which struggles with true Dual Threat QBs concerns me more. But, if VT can limit the turnovers like you suggest, maybe OSU won't be able to sustain long drives or hit big plays. We will surely find out soon!
I think it was more than the mobile QB. When they spread the field to pass you need to either play man and have your back to the ball, or have the extra man in deep zone and out of the box. Bud likes to bring pressure in these situations, and takes a risk in doing so. While it seems to work out more often than not, we were hurt last year by our backers not having the speed/quickness to match up as spy combined with some true freshman in the secondary who were still learning when to get off man coverage and tackle. Our opponents figured out how to use a formation to get a desired speed match-up and used it. We may have issues with parts of the D this year, but I do not expect line-backer speed to be one of them.
We'll have Urban's post game pizza waiting for him.
These are the only words that are kind of overwhelming to me right now: "With a capacity crowd expected at 104,944-seat Ohio Stadium Saturday night, this will likely be the largest crowd that the Virginia Tech football team will have ever played in front of."
Hopefully the guys will be able to block out the crowd and nerves and get the job done. It's good practice for Bristol in 2016! :)
The wife is anOSU fan so I see plenty of their games, including last week. JT is no Braxton. Strong arm but not a cannon like Braxton had. His wide open deep ball td was under thrown. Against a better team thats a pick, or a miraculous recovery like Kendall in the end-zone (dude is a freak!). Also, he isn't as fast as Braxton. His 16yd long run was a TD if it was Braxton. I don't know if it's his repaired knee but he doesn't look to cut like Braxton and doesn't have the burst. Hundley from UCLA is a much better athlete. But with that, he doesn't have to be because they recruit talent around him. He just has to be a point guard. But he's not going to put them on his shoulders like Braxton could do. I also hope they show film of just our base packages to their young oline and Bud breaks their brains. Nothing special from a top 5 D and one of the best coordinators in the country?! Haha ok. I hope that was just coach talk...trying not to scare his young oline via the media.
Did you mean this?

Yep. That. My kid plays DB for his youth team. Loves the Fullers, as an VT fan should. We both flipped out on that play.
That's awesome! The Fullers continue to amaze me (and defy physics).
Lets see how JT plays after he gets drilled a few times by Dadi n' Maddy....Now thats what I call a dual-threat...
Since you watched last week's game, I have a question. How did Navy rush for 370 yards vs this def line I keep hearing about?
Two words...Triple Option. If Navy doesn't put up 300+ yards rushing on someone, it's because the defense was really good.
I agree that the triple option helps rack up some yards, but watching that game, Navy was actually going anOSU all they wanted and more. Navy blew a few good chances or anOSU loses that game.
I like to substitute Barkley with Brewer, and McKnight with Shai. Gets me going
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UHftDbXiuk
Just for laughts - we should have the offense install a "Tebow" call at the line of scrimmage - similar to "Omaha" from Mr. Manning...
I wonder how urban meyers wife feels about her husband talking about expanding his package!? Like we all thought osu would show everything against navy.
Well stop traffics because the Hokies are gonna unleash Cartoons Plural against Ohio State!
Hope he has a good quick kick play for 3rd down
I'm going to go ahead and predict a "butt fumble" for Barrett this Saturday...
that would be great
Call me crazy but I highly doubt Urban Myer has any kind of game plan that involves denying pussy touchdowns....
IF....our D can hold OSU to 21 points as above,
I think our D will be up for scoring a few points as well-I like our chances for a fumble/interception with a young O-line and penetrating D, and a young QB and our secondary.
That will take some of the pressure off the offense to score.
Why am I feeling optimistic about this game?
Because you bleed maroon and orange....because you can't help but feel good about all the good young talent you saw in week 1....because you can't help but be excited about the future of this team...because you believe in your heart that something big is about to happen. The Hokies are due to finally win a big game against a ranked opponent.
This is it....
