What famous VT alumni should the Hokies bring on the sideline to attract star recruits in Columbus?

Some of the nations top recruits to attend Virginia Tech VS Ohio State game. The list includes Five-star defensive end Josh Sweat of Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith (2015), Five-star cornerback Kevin Toliver II of Jacksonville (Fla.) Trinity Christian (2015), Five-star running back Jacques Patrick of Orlando (Fla.) Timber Creek, Four-star quarterback Torrance Gibson of Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage (2015), Three-star wide receiver Lawrence Cager of Towson (Md.) Calvert Hall (2015).

Its possible that Ohio State will have Lebron James on the sideline to attract recruits. Even though the Hokies will be away from home, VT may have to bring its own star power to attract recruits.

Bruce Smith

@CaptKirkVT10

either him or Antonio Freeman, after those two the options start to dwindle in significant star power

They'll really get after ya

Yeah I agree. Either that or everyone else who we could possibly bring is in the NFL with week 1 none of them will show up. Bruce needs to be there just for Josh Sweat

@CaptKirkVT10

Recruits: "OH MY GOD, GUYS, IT'S BRUCE SMITH!! BRUCE?!? How does it feel to be a living legend?"

Bruce: "Go Hokies!"

Yes, I think Bruce is at every game anyways now that is his son is on the team

Hey he's always on the sidelines at home but we were talking about if we brought someone to anOSU. But welcome to TKP!

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

My second favorite is Britney Spears.

Unfortunately, her and her Hokie bf broke up.

Welp, looks like her days of doing the Hokie Poke-y are over for now.

What kind of idiot dates the BRITNEY SPEARS and cheats on her? Really dude???
Who was better than Britney?? Come on, man!!!

Also, trying to think of appropriate ways to use "Slave For You" and "Hit Me Baby One More Time" isn't an easy task.

Maybe he was a freeloader and got tired of yelling "Work Bitch" at him.

Regardless I'm sure she will be Stronger for it.

IMO if a kid is going to make his decision based on what superstar is being brought in for the game I don't want them. Its all about the Team and the school not a superstar. It's also funny because Lebron didn't even go to college but OSU is acting like he was their player. It all started when they had a jersey/locker for him during one of their games a few years ago. I think its pathetic/childish but it seems to work. Maybe they should invite the local tattoo artist as well so the recruits can pre-plan their free tattoos!

Go Hokies!

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

Fuck that. Who says it would be the only thing that matters to these kids? Anything goes and everything helps in recruiting. Are you saying that any kid who will get excited to see one of their heroes is not worthy of this school? Because that is BS.

No that wasn't my point.. Anything goes and helps but in this case I don't see the correlation with Lebron and Ohio State FOOTBALL? Do you?

My point is if they're going to commit to said school (OSU) because a living legend Lebron who didn't even go there/has 0 football relevance to OSU was brought in to sway a recruit then that't fine. Its actually pretty funny because Lebron has 0 to do with Ohio State, that's like Virginia Tech bringing in Russell Wilson because he grew up in Richmond and went to school in Virginia. (for highschool just like lebron went to St V St Mary)

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

I don't really care about the LeBron thing TBH. I just take issue with you saying that a recruit that could be influenced by the VT alums isn't good enough for this school. Having famous alumni here can show recruits that we too can produce players at the next level.

Exactly the key point there is Famous Alums, and I am all for that. 100% I would love for more alums to get involved and that is what I think Whit is going to try and attack.. Get the ex players more involved and around campus as much as possible.

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

I'm trying to figure out why his logo will be on the tOSU bball unis for the Puerto Rico Shootout. Seems like trying to latch onto something, instead of honoring the real tOSU alum.

in this case I don't see the correlation with Lebron and Ohio State FOOTBALL? Do you?

I do. LeBron is an OSU fan (like pretty much all Ohio natives). LeBron would be a fan of me, if I played for OSU. I imagine many recruits would love for LeBron to be a fan of theirs.
Case in point:

🦃 🦃 🦃

What famous VT alumni should the Hokies bring on the sideline to attract star recruits in Columbus?

]

key Word again is Alumni- IDGAF if lebron is a Ohio State Fanboy he is not an alumni, I would bet he doesn't know more than 3-5 football players on the team. It just seems dumb that a superstar athlete like lebron would be able to sway a decision or have any impact at all. But the world we live in today is all about: Lebron, Michael Sam, Tebow, SEC and Bama.

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

Ok, the title is not an accurate representation of the written body, as indicated in a sarcastic statement below by RealDiehl. I'm using the author's purposivism when I make my comment, not his literal title.

And if you think LeBron on the sideline is dumb recruiting tactic, that doesn't matter. What matters is what recruits think. If you're actually a recruit, I'll rescind my statement, assuming your opinion as a recruit is concurrent with the opinion of the recruit body as a whole.

🦃 🦃 🦃

I don't think its a dumb recruiting tool, however if a recruit is already thinking of becoming a star and worried about oh is lebron going to see me then that's not the type of player I want. Its cool and all but it shouldn't be a huge deciding factor. The only reason it's a big deal is because espn is on lebrons dingdong.. oh lebron will be on the sidelines for the game.. If it were any other alumni/future player I can guarantee you that espn wouldn't give 1 single FK

I want someone like I Ford who came in quietly busted his ass and now is a top WR for us. I don't want a Blanding or Jamil kamara who is only worried about the individual stats/Check that might come in 4 years. lets hope these recruits see past the stardom/fake alumni athlete that lebron is for OSU.

"I'm high on Juice and ready to stick it in!" Whit Babcock

Fair points, and I would agree that having LeBron on the sidelines is all about show with no substance. But being a successful recruiter is not 100% about substance. One thing we can all learn from Whit is the ability to sell your program or idea via marketing techniques. You gotta have substance and you want to find players with substance, but marketing to that player is extremely important. It's not a black and white proposition. Some recruits (maybe Blanding or Kamara for example) only care about show and not about the substance. Some recruits (maybe Andrew Ford) only care about the substance. Most recruits will fall somewhere in the grey area, looking for both substance and show. So, I leave you with this:
both

🦃 🦃 🦃

Getting MV7 to Columbus would be amazing, the media would love it too.

As soon as he retired from the game, we should do whatever we can to make sure he and Bruce Smith are staples on our sidelines at least to every home game. Those are 2 iconic NFL guys, and if recruits come in and see they'd be able to rub shoulders with 2 of the greats to ever play the game on a weekly basis, that would go a long, long way in our efforts.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I 100% agree. We will see how long it takes before he throws in the towel. I would burst with happiness if he ends up getting a super bowl ring even as a back up.

We are halfway there - Bruce IS on the sidelines every game!

Recruit: "Hey Lebron! I'm a huge fan of yours. So, what are some good points about OSU?"

Lebron: "Umm well I'm not sure. I didn't go to college. In fact I left the state of Ohio to take my talents to South Beach. I'm just here enjoying these sweet sideline tickets to watch the Hokies upset OSU."

While those athletes will be there, don't think they will say a single word to our coaching staff. OSU won't let them out of their sight to go get an autograph from anyone we could bring or to even smile at our coaching staff. The last thing they want to do is allow their official visit to have a Hokie push. The only thing we can do to help ourselves in recruiting them is win. Plain and simple. So in regards to which famous alumni we should have on our sideline, I'll go with Beamer and a big ole W.

DHall, Eddie royal, Ryan Williams David Wilson

There are wolves and there are sheep, I am the sheep dog

I like the idea of David Wilson being around to try to convince these kids to get their degree and kind of be an example of no matter how great you are to always take advantage of that fall back plan. May not help recruiting, but I think it helps player development.

I think Kam Chancellor has more sway as a member of the Legion of Boom than most of our alumn in the NFL right now. The Super Bowl ring bling should be able to be seen from the Ohio St sideline as well.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I'd look for him on the sideline for the Western Michigan game, as Seattle is on a bye that week. Do we have any big time recruits coming that weekend? (I think I read somewhere that this might be the Sweat visit)

I believe Sweat is visiting us for the GT game.

lol

These kids are in Columbus to evaluate Ohio State, not to get in the middle of a dick-measuring contest with us and the Buckeyes.

Beat OSU in the 'shoe, that sends a louder message than Bruce, MV7 or any other famous VT alum.

That's what I was thinking. The recruits are visiting OSU, they will not be roaming our sidelines or sitting behind our bench.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

You'd hope so, but it's an additive effect. Have Hall of Famers on the sideline, have great coaches and scheme, win in the shoe. It all adds up.

They better hope it is not a dick measuring contest, I hear their mascot is all nuts.

Why is it that a woman wearing the school colors seems so much hotter?

I think you answered your own question there.

I would say Bruce Smith at first, but he goes to a lot of the games now, even more with Alston being there. Personally I would say MV7. When some college football fan goes up to another and asks, "When I say Virginia Tech, who/what do you think of?"

I think 9 times out of 10, people would say Michael Vick. Now the "older" generation fans would probably argue and say Bruce Smith, I don't know exactly I'm only 24, but Michael Vick changed the whole way the QB is played nowadays. More kids/prospects will also be able to relate to and know MV7 imho.

Im not sure what to make of that. Those two are close. With Moorehead as a recruiter, VT could do the impossible and get Cager to sign with Tech.

Allen Ox

Why would Lebron be allowed on the sidelines? At no point in time did he have anything to do with Ohio State.

Its a good marketing move by OSU. Its also great for the game. Lebron is a very popular athlete and is free to support any team he wants. Recruits follow and listen sport celebrities. The Hokies will have to counteract and bring their own iconic figures.

Allen Ox

Because they want him there. Same reason Da U used to have Luke on the sidelines in the late 80s. I always wondered if VA celebs had a college fb team they pulled for. We have a few from VA. 2 of the boggest hip hop/R&B guys are from VA.

Correy

eh, having rappers on the sideline there made sense, it fit their with the identity of the team... not so much at VT

To piggyback, I doubt Frank would have any of that. Just because anOSU supposedly is going to have LeBron on the sidelines (as much a good pr stunt for himself as anything) doesn't mean we have to join them. Look at the schools that have gone down this path; Miami, USC, now anOSU to name a few. I'm good doing what we've been doing and not following their lead.

Buuuuuuuuuut, we have beat them for 10 straight years....

I look at it this way...
No one expects us to win. We are 11.5 point underdogs. They think we are going to be a pushover.
They have EVERYTHING to lose and we have NOTHING to lose. They are ranked, we are not.
They are in front of 104,000 fans on a nationally televised game at the Shoe. They have LeBron on the sidelines and a host of top level recruits.

The only proper way for this to end is for the Hokies to smack them in the mouth and stun the world....talk about a letdown. I would love to see Lebron's face when we beat them. What does he say to Josh Sweat after the Hokies kick their teeth in??

This is going to be a karmic victory for the Hokies....I FEEL it.

I liked what they had but I think they missed on one point:

In the passing game, the Buckeyes will need to call on their inside receivers to make plays. Though the Hokies have outstanding coverage players on the outside with their corners, the Rover and Whip are hybrid players that don't specialize in man coverage.

You can make an argument for the Whip (especially if RVD is out) but Jarrett can cover like a glove.

In all fairness,

Since LeBron isn't an OSU alum then we just need to find a celeb that's a VT fan. Anyone know if Pharrell has a team? He's a VB guy. Chris Brown? He is from VA. I read on TSL I believe I was that Robert Duvall is a VT guy. Not sure a young guy would care about him though. Mike Vick still has some star power, DLo as well but the NFL starts Sunday.

Correy

Only going off what I know from the 30 for 30 documentary "The U" wouldn't LeBron be classified as a booster which isn't supposed to have contact with recruits ala Uncle Luke?

Hope that's true about Duvall, because he's one of the best in the biz. Even better, my understanding is his property is pretty close to hooville.

this is correct. Also understand Martin Lawrence either used to or still does have a home in that general area.

Dont forget VT will have on the sideline Super bowl winner, Ex-Colt pass-catcher, up and coming recruiter, wood-Chopper, Aaron Morehead.

I think we should have All Pro / Pro Bowl OT Duane Brown on our sidelines every opportunity that we can. He may not be as sexy as some other high profile skill position alums, but I bet he would make a huge impression on our o-line recruits.

you mean tight end recruits? ;)

HOKIE HOKIE HOKIE HI
'14 grad

Point taken. And of course you're right. Nevertheless, we need elite, successful OL reps from The League for the Hokies. And that's how Duane Brown ended up at least.

I typically try to avoid Bleacher Report during the football season (for numerous reasons) but managed to catch this article today: LeBron James' Role in Ohio State Football's Biggest Recruiting Weekend of 2014.

Before reading this I was perfectly content thinking that we could lose this game and still be alright. Now I'm really nervous about the game. The good news is that they have to come to Blacksburg next year, potentially with a healthy Miller, and play (hopefully) a night game in Lane. So while we could miss some recruits this year because of a loss we could potentially make up for it the next year. Hopefully the recruits that are considering us aren't going to let LeBron change their decision, but everyone gets star struck.

How has no one mentioned Vincent, Corey, Kyle, and OF COURSE Mama and Papa Fuller?

Oh my god I didn't even think about how much of an impact inviting the mama of all Hokies onto the sideline would have. I'm sure lots of guys would love the fact that we pay so much respect to the parents, especially the mothers, of our players.

As expected, Lebron James is on the sideline supporting Ohio State. I wonder who the Hokies bring.

Allen Ox

How about we bring a win? Will that work?
