It ranks in the Top 5. Because it was at their place. Because they were ranked #8. Because it was only our 2nd game with such a young team & a new QB. Because of the national recognition it received.
In no particular order - Texas Sugar Bowl '95 win, Clemson '98 beatdown, Miami '03, pick another, this one. It's not fifth, not first. Probably Top 3, certainly Top 5.
One factor that determines it is what we do the rest of the season. If we somehow flounder or squander this building block of a victory, then it lessens. If it propels us to a great season, it grows. As it stands now, that's how I rank it.

I think beating FSU in the ACC title game was nice. We beat Bowden (3rd and 31), but to take the ACC that year, with Tyrod's performance, that was a top 5er for me; but I wasn't around in the 90's for those program defining wins, only became a Hokie in '00.

Tied in the top 5 or so......mitigated by the fact that they still had to use a frosh QB with no experience....that's on them though.....The defense last night was on fire and I am so glad the world saw it including a whole lot of potential recruits.....

We NEVER win that game, the other day I was going through out previous 10 years schedules and was reminded how often we lose that same game. I couldn't help but think "here we go again" when it got to 21-21. I've never been more proud of a Virginia Tech team. This is my favorite win of all time (also biased bc I was a student in BBurg last night).

You should embrace your bias. I wish I was still a student, especially on campus. I saw pictures and videos from last night on facebook and it looked awesome! But forget your bias and...

I tried to put a number on it but the thing that came to me was where the game was played at. It always seems like we never win the big road games, for that reason it is near the top for me.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I will take it a step further and say second. 95 Sugar Bowl being first. Tech needed this win desperatley. They were becoming an afterthought to the eyes of the nation. The media stopped paying attention and more importantly recruits were leaving the state to go elsewhere. Now they, at least for a week, have taken the spotlight back. If they can ride this wave in many years we may look back and say this was the biggest win in Tech history.

The recruits leaving is not new. We accomplished this with mostly a bunch of walk-ons and 2 or 3* recruits. Imagine what our coaches could do with the best talent available.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
This team is mostly 4 and 3 star guys. A few 2 and walk-ons here and there but Tech has much better recruiting than you're thinking. An OSU has a lot of 5 and 4, so there is a talent difference, just not as drastic as you say
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Agreed. The poormouthing of - 'We're just a scrappy bunch of guys that nobody else wanted' hasn't been accurate for a couple of decades now. It's absolutely true that we don't have as many 4/5-star recruits as the elite name teams (who've got national championship trophies), but it's also true we've consistently been ranked in the 20's nationally in recruiting classes for over a decade now. You do NOT do that with a bunch of walk-ons & mostly 2/3-star recruits.
There is a talent difference, but one that we can close by winning more of these games in the future.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Agree with a lot of these comments and I was telling friends last night during this beautiful thing the exact same things. I literally said exactly "Virginia Tech NEEDS this victory for so many reasons". But I will disagree on the talent comment. Frosh QB or not -- on paper, tOSU should have kicked the living shit out of our team. The talent difference (at least coming out of high school) isn't even close. I love winning the way we do.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I'll say this about the offensive skill players for OhState - they didn't play like 4/5-star recruits. I don't know if they are, but they didn't play like they were. A lot was because of our D, but even then, they didn't impress me at all. I didn't see a single WR they had that I'd want to play in place of our guys. What was the supposed star receiver's name - Calvin Smith(#84) or whatever? He couldn't catch a cold. He had the ball hit him in the hands, not just barely, but solidly a few times and fumbled every one.
As for their RB's? Again, I wouldn't trade for a single one of them. Maybe they were misused or whatever, but they didn't impress me. I'd take both Shai & Marshawn over any of them.

As for their RB's? Again, I wouldn't trade for a single one of them.
Until Elliot had the TD run I was wondering if one of their RBs even had a carry in the game. I don't think its on the RBs I just think their OC didn't use them at all.

That's true. I kept thinking near the end of the second quarter - 'Wonder what new twist Bud will unveil in the second half?' because, you know, he always does a superb job of halftime adjustments. But, heck, in the third quarter the announcers were talking about it - Bud Foster's defense has had the same strategy the entire game...' and I thought - 'You know what? All he did was amp up the pressure more in the second half, but no adjustments...'

Yep, the 95 Sugar Bowl put Tech on the map, but this one might even wind up being bigger, IF they build on it and don't let down.
The way they responded after the game was tied in the 4th quarter, still gives me chills and the 3rd down conversions - who knew? Our Defense was awesome, I expected that, but to see our offense score 4 TDs against an elite Defense in hostile territory - priceless!! Now we need to go pound the tar out of East Carolina. GO HOKIES!!!

As a "future of the program" type win, I think this game can be right there with the 95 Sugar Bowl. The 03 win against Miami was great fun, but really didn't matter in the bigger picture.
As mentioned above, this happened on the road in front of a massive crowd, with recruits in attendance that may decide to come to VT and help put on firmly back in the national picture. Yesterday morning the question was "What happened to Virginia Tech?"
This morning the question is "What is happening with Virginia Tech!?!"
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I disagree about Miami in 03. That team was loaded and on the way to another national championship. The defense came out and completely demoralised Berlin from the first snap and single handedly won that game. That is one of the best demonstrations of blue collar tech football beating talent and hype.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Another long term factor about that Miami game is this - Look at where they are now. You have to wonder just how much of an impact that Hokie beatdown had on their entire program, and it's vaunted 'SWAG'. They were ranked #2 at that time. Yes, it was one game in a season, but the lasting impact of yanking away their SWAG just when they thought they were able to return to the top can't be underestimated.
That's why long term perspective is needed to properly grade out a signature win, as I said initially. Even so, this one is very near the top already.

In terms of complete wins you can make the argument that last night was #1. On the road. Huge game. 107,000 fans. Won with defense AND Offense. There is no question to anyone that really watched that game that Bud just demoralized Urban's offense. Just straight nightmares keep you up at night stuff. I'm glad Braxton didn't play that game for his own safety. And the play calling.. And Brewers pocket presence. Overcoming Ohio States just beastly Defensive Line that swallowed what prayer we had for a running game. And we still won. Man what a night.

For all the questions we had coming in I am really happy with these guys.
1. I have only really followed VT football since 2006. This is the biggest win I have witnessed and I feel the effects could be huge.
2. I love that Beamer was happy but he wants to build on it. He wants to continually get better. He wants to get to the playoffs.
3. I have never witnessed us actually beat someone in every facet (at least it felt like it) of the game albeit being close that was ranked. Miami maybe.
4. The impact this could have on recruiting is HUGE. I know many say one game doesn't matter but that is usually said after we lose.
5. I loved that it relied on the defense to end it for us because we never trailed in the game. I loved we didnt play prevent and dialed up the pressure on defense.

I loved how the game reminded me of the total domination of Miami in 2009 - we beat them up and down the field. Lots of picks from Pickory Harris and a bunch of sacks. But that game didn't have huge implications like this one. The energy felt a lot like 2003 Miami - underdogs, in '03 having a rough year and in '14 a total unknown coming off of bad years. This one was bigger because it was away. I don't know where it stacks up all-time (I've been watching since 1999), but the 2002 LSU game also comes to mind.

In terms of national perception? The single biggest regular season win in program history. Don't understate this win, this was HUGE. On the road in National Primetime on ESPN as an unranked team against a Top 10 Big Ten opponent? No single win wee have ever had in the regular season rises up to this level. This was an Ohio St program that was on a 64 game win streak at home against non-conference opponents. This was an Ohio State team that had not lost a home opener since 1978. And we beat them. We beat them by 2 TDs in a game where we never really lost control. This was a statement win for a program that has been desperate for one for nearly a decade. Even more importantly, this was a statement to our fanbase that the decisions Beamer made after the 2012 season were the right ones to make.
The only win in our program's history that outclasses this one was the '95 Sugar Bowl win against Texas.

Yeah, a hell of a lot of people saw this game, and most of the non-partial observes were probably very glad that we gave Ohio State a L. Huge win for our program and it was a win that was a long time coming.

Yep. I think that once Barrett settles in they win 9 or 10 games. They still have a ridiculous amount of talent and once they can put it together they will be dangerous.

This was the highest ranked opponent we've ever beaten on the road. I'd say this is one of the greatest wins we'eve ever had, but it remains to be seen how Ohio State rebounds after this.

Solid #2, right behind the 1995 Sugar Bowl. We won our first ever meeting with a giant of a program, on their turf, with all those streaks of theirs, AND THEY NEVER ONCE HELD A LEAD.

I appreciate all the answers. I guess because it is fresh in our minds I would rank this as number 1 in my opinion. Accomplishing a win in their home opener in front of that large of a crowd was amazing.

5. Da U '09 Lane Stadium (were they ranked #9? I forget)

Let's see...#1 - 2003 Miami game (Hokies ended their 31 game regular season streak) #2 - 1995 LOLUVA game (Hokies came back from 15 down to win the game in the final minute) #3 - 2010 Nebraska game (Tyrod finds Coale running free down the sideline) #4 - 1995 Texas Sugar Bowl WIN (need I say more?) #5 - 2014 Ohio St. game (Tied at 21 and punting I thought..is it going to happen again? You must be joking)

Without any particular order, there are a couple that come to mind that no one has mentioned. Georgia Tech 2004. Bryan Randall earned his stripes, Hyman and Royal were legendary. LSU 2002. LSU was the reigning SEC Champ, was a top 25 team, and we absolutely owned them on both sides of the ball. Syracuse 1997. McNabb was ESPN's boy toy of the year. Their Heisman front runner from day 1. Donovan looked like a high school water boy. This was my first game in Lane. Texas A&M 2003. Hurricane Game.

I witnessed many games as a kid but the ones that are in my memory are the WV game of 04, Miami and Nebraska 09, and this game. We have always had the coaching and, generally, the talent to be in these games but there seemed to be a stigma that we couldn't overcome the mountain to get to victory. It seemed like we hit a wall. Alabama 09, played with them into the fourth quarter and couldn't hang on. Boise St., let them have 17 free points then took it to them only to lose in the final minutes. BC at home, 07, lose the game in the last minute. We were plagued by heartbreaking losses and it stopped last night. Because of that statement alone, I think this is one of the greatest. Because they finally dominated all phases.
Last year we beat ECU because our offense needed 4 quarters to muster a measly 15 points. As beamer said, this win means nothing if we don't build on it. This is the perfect game to show that. ECU played South Carolina tough, its time to lay down the wood and get another 35 points + in a game. Go Hokies!

Last night was the 131st game I've attended since I started my freshman year at Tech in 1998. Ranking against the other 130, I'd put it as my second favorite. Before last night, my top 10 favorite games (which take into account a lot of factors) were: 2010 GT, 2007 ACCCG, 2004 Miami, 2008 Nebraska, 2003 Texas A&M, 1999 Syracuse, 2009 Miami, 2011 Miami, 2009 Nebraska, 2003 Miami.
If you're ranking games purely in terms of how important they were for our program, I'd put last night 3rd behind the 1995 Sugar Bowl and 1999 Syracuse. Both of those games were huge in terms of shaping national perception of Virginia Tech football. Last night went a long way in making national media believe in our program again after the last 2 seasons, and it also was a much needed step in fixing our image as a team unable to beat highly ranked opponents.

Haha, thank you! I keep all of my ticket stubs and am also nerd enough to maintain a spreadsheet of games I've attended. The Hokies overall record in my 131 games is 99-32 .... looking for a big win this weekend!

That was a cathedral of college football last night. 107k, biggest crowd in the history of one of the five best stadiums in the country. Everyone in red. Prime time game at the end of a great football day. Once the Ore-MSU game ended, everyone turned it over to our game and saw OSU tie it up and us take over. Everyone in the country saw those 6 sacks in the last 9 minutes, that go ahead drive, that pick return.
Because of that setting, this was greater than any BCS game.
This was the greatest victory in Virginia Tech football history.

I have it tied for third.
1) ECU '07, while this may not be solely for the victory that was by far the game that has stuck with me the most. Lane just felt like home to everyone that day.
2) Miami '03, my first game in lane and the beat down that was put on Miami that night. Perfect.
3) LSU, I don't remember what year and anOSU '14, but beating Saban is always fun and I don't know why it is but Urban Meyer is just scum to me.

1.) Miracle in Morgantown. Not as impressive as a win at the Shoe but the significance of that win cannot be overlooked.
2. ) Texas in Sugar Bowl. Highly important game in the program's history
3. ) OSU 2014
4. ) Miami 2003
5. ) LSU 2002. They weren't that great that year by LSU standards but it was a game that further validated VT as a program to be taken seriously (and not flash in the pan that would cave post MV1)

I'm not sure we'll know this until after the season, if then. If we stink up the rest of the season (which I definitely do not expect), then it becomes a footnote. If we build on it, then it could be big. If OSU learns from it and keeps winning too, it could be even bigger. If we are able to expand recruiting on top of that, potentially the biggest win ever. Answers may be a work in progress for some time to come.

Hi guys, Hope you don't mind me jumping in here. Full disclosure, I'm an Ohio State fan. Saturday was a tough loss for us, no doubt. But I also know, as a fellow fan of a college team, these wins make you feel high for weeks. Enjoy it and best of luck the rest of the season!!

It ranks in the Top 5. Because it was at their place. Because they were ranked #8. Because it was only our 2nd game with such a young team & a new QB. Because of the national recognition it received.

Hear ye, hear ye...couldnt have summed up by feelings any other way
Syracuse. '99. They hyped it up by claiming Vick was no McNabb. Said we hadn't played anyone and weren't as good as the hype. We gave them 63-0.

I meant bigger picture for us. It didn't lead us to anything significant that season. The only other game we won that year was OT vs Temple.
Not saying that winning that game wasn't a signature win, but this game feels like more given the youth of our team, the recruiting implications, etc.
I didn't realize that VT broke an 0-34 slump against a top #8 teams on the road. Ofer, WOW.
It was a major win for the program. out-of-conference, in one of the cathedrals of College football. Just awesome.
That's an O-fer specifically in away games against top-8. Not that the record against top-8 overall is much better, to be honest.
I'm aware. Should have stated it more clearly. Fixed it.
Our top 5 record is about as bad. Only Miami at home in '03.
Where does this victory rank?

8. UVA '05 Scott Stadium C'ville (officially renamed to Lane Stadium N aka Lame Stadium)
9. TIE Cincy '09 Orange Bowl - Da U '11 Lane
10. Wvu '05 Morganhole Stadium
Leg for actually knowing you have been to 131 games.
In terms of victories, I would say #3.
Thanks for dropping by. Good luck to you and OSU the rest of the season. Hope you win the B1G championship.
