I guess we could speculate that it might influence the selection committee.. not sure when their first poll is, but I'd guess it will be fairly close to the AP and coaches poll.... we'll see I guess

1. UNC is falling. They will be out of the Top 25 soon. Hype train derailed.
2. UCLA is slowly slipping after struggling with Memphis.
3. Top 5 are unchanged, but I really feel like Oregon should get more credit for beating MSU convincingly than Bama and OK get for pasting inferior competition.

I hate the polls so much. Not because where we are ranked. Around about 15 sounds right, and OSU should be right by us. They gave us a hell of a game and it could have gone either way. First, who is this poll fooling. NO coaches watched any other games and are probably the last people we should ask to rank the teams. It's just a sliding scale. You win you go up. You lose, you go down. Look at USCw and Stanford. Ranked 13 and 14 and played a close, sloppy game. They should still be ranked 13 and 14. Polls are dumb; coaches poll is fully dipped, dork magic, dumb.

Hokies just need to keep on winning. Things will take care of themselves with wins. We don't have to worry about bad poll rankings affecting our BCS rankings; since everything will come down to a group of people in a room making the decisions about the playoffs.

This all goes back to preseason and week one polls. People are afraid to move teams once they have them in their preseason poll. Hell we could have an entire starting lineup get arrested or kicked out of school for a power 5 team in the summer and their "ranking" will stay the same once that first poll comes out.

Further proof that the Coaches' Poll - as done by staff assistants late at night - is garbage. I estimate the press poll will be more reliable. Even so, the polls only matter for ego until October. We've been placed in the poll where we would have had we opened the season ranked 15th, then beaten W&M and lost to OhState by a 23-14 score. Which is about what was predicted prior to the game.
So, despite the stupidity of the Coaches' Poll, we're ranked in a fairly reasonable spot. I still say the press poll puts us at 15th, where we deserve. As long as we're ranked Top 20, though, we're okay for the run to November.

I am very anxious to see where we are in the AP poll. I know it is strange to say, but I'm honestly more nervous about the East Carolina game than I was about Ohio State. I have such high hopes for this season. The team needs to stay humble and always know that any team is capable of winning. We need to keep winning and moving up. This team is capable of beating ANYONE so long as they show up to every game with the attitude they had last night.

ECU scares me a lot every year. However I have confidence that after all the years of playing them close and even losing in 2008 (still bitter over that one), the staff will buckle down and have the boys ready.

After the biggest road win in program history, we play against a team we have played for many years in a row, that we should beat, that knows us well, coming into our house.
Alarm sirens are going off in my head

It's good to be back in the polls though, being 2-0, and finally beating a good team on the road! I agree, we should be higher then Ohio St but the coaches might feel sorry for Ohio St losing Miller. Either way, the Hokies are back and just need to keep winning. Go Hokies!

This is why there should NOT be preseason rankings. It's all based on last year and opinions, or if you're in the SEC (5 in the top 9, seriously??). All that happens is you slide a could spots each week. I say don't start ranking until week 4 or so.

Yeah that makes sense
if VT keeps winning, even the biased pollsters can keep TECH out of the top 10.
Ohio State is the better team, despite losing, despite losing by two touchdowns, despite having never led?
Oh, and they played at home in front of 100,000+ of their fans.
Hm...
Because... that makes... sense...?
That is a joke...
Right about where I expected.....but, I thought we would of been higher then the team we beat!
That's what you get for thinking.
Stop it. Stop it right now.
Someone either doesn't get sarcasm or has fat fingers...
Wonder where we will be in the AP Poll.
I'll venture a prediction that we'll be just a bit higher. I'll say #16, with anOSU just below us, maybe one or two spots.
We should find out in 5 minutes, the AP poll comes out at 2pm.
This really has no bearing though right?
I mean, game it out to the best possible scenario: OSU & VT win out.
If there is only one spot left in the playoff, there's no way OSU would get it over us.
Is there any reason to sweat rankings any more?

Other observations:
Agreed on #3. Its not like they lost to an SEC team though. Maybe then they would have moved up

HEY!
Fully dipped dork magic is a good thing. It should not be used to describe something we don't like.
Sam Rodgers was fully dipped in dork magic when he didn't let OSU deny him his pussy touchdown. That's how that's supposed to be used.
That definitely should be flipped. We deserve to be ranked ahead of a team we destroyed.
Hokies just need to keep on winning. Things will take care of themselves with wins. We don't have to worry about bad poll rankings affecting our BCS rankings; since everything will come down to a group of people in a room making the decisions about the playoffs.

I'm just glad to see VT ranked again. I see us crawling up the polls every week

#15 in Sagarin rankings.. sounds about right, though somehow still behind OSU

There's lies, there's damn lies, there's statistics, then there's the coaches poll.

I feel the same about the ECU game and thought so going into last night, thinking we would beat OSU
ECU scares me a lot every year. However I have confidence that after all the years of playing them close and even losing in 2008 (still bitter over that one), the staff will buckle down and have the boys ready.
ECU IS NOW THE TRAP GAME TO END ALL TRAP GAMES.
After the biggest road win in program history, we play against a team we have played for many years in a row, that we should beat, that knows us well, coming into our house.

I am VERY nervous for the ECU game. Hopefully the players can ignore the media hype from this past weekend and focus on this weekend.

Anyone have links for the AP poll? It's past 2 and I've been refreshing their poll from last week and am still not seeing anything.

We need UNC to keep winning and DUke to keep winning so they can be ranked when we play them
We are 17 in the AP Poll! Ohio State is 22.
Danny Kanell's first comment on SC about the polls was asking how dumb the coaches poll is for having us below Ohio State.
