ESPN Bowl Projections

I know this means nothing but both ESPN prognosticators have the Hokies playing in the Orange Bowl. pretty big change from last week when they had us going to the TaxSlayer and Sun Bowls.

Well, right now we're a 2-win team, and last time I checked, 2 wins won't get you to bowl eligibility.

That said, it's nice to have a little buzz around the program and that the radius of said buzz is extending beyond Blacksburg.

3 wins, but still not bowl eligible. You forgot UVA

I didn't think the second FCS win counted.

Are you prepared to say that to Buzz's face?

I think the Hokies still have a lot to prove. IMO, OSU is a team in shambles. This is not their only loss this year. The offensive line is a mess, and the defensive front didn't play as well as I thought they would.

Ironically, all of the pundits talked about J.T. Barrett being the weak link, and at the end of the day, it was his play that kept the Buckeyes in the game.

But still, the Buckeyes haven't lost a home opener since I was like 9 years old, and to go up there and do that on big boy TV is great for the program. I just wouldn't start lifting the lid on the empty trophy case yet. LOT of work left to do.

Leonard. Duh.

I think shambles might be too strong a word. Their defense is still pretty good, they'll get Noah Spence back, I think, next week, and their secondary is young. The Big Ten isn't well known for it's transcendent passing attacks, and OSU has much better athletes than most of the rest of their conference.

I agree that they'll have another loss or two by the end of the year, but when you look at their schedule, the only game that looks like a surefire loss is Michigan State. And that game doesn't happen until Nov8. I think they'll improve significantly between now and then. They get Kent St, Cincy, Maryland, and Rutgers between now and their trip to Happy Valley, which I'd think will be four wins.

JT will come along quickly and the offensive line just needs reps. They have good coaching, so I think I'd project a maximum of three losses this year, one to MichSt and one other random game.

Their fans are worried about Maryland. Do they know something we don't? (yes, I know we lost to them, but last year was…special)

Barrett is a smart guy and young.
I think he learned a lot and will be a better football player after Saturday.
He really did not make that many errors.
The last INT was communications. He threw the ball on a timing route and our guy was playing the QBs eyes, not the WR. The QB and the WR did not have the same route.

Other then that, there were not many mistakes. Those guys would have had a much more effective offense against a lesser defense.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I'm still confused about the playoff system. Does this mean they're projecting us to win the ACCCG, which will probably be against FSU? Or are they expecting us to lose the ACCCG, FSU go into the CFB Playoff and we go to the OB?

Lose to FSU in the ACCCG. If we won the ACC we would be in the playoffs.

Not if VT wins the coastal with 2 or 3 losses and then beats FSU, UL, or Clemson in the ACCCG.

We're not even fully dipped into the season yet.

I hope the young kids on our team don't read into the hype, coaches need to keep them focused. most important game meow is ECU, GO HOKIES!

If ESPN keeps changing its Bowl Projections after each VT's win, the Hokies could finally win the National Championship. In preseason they had the Hokies going to a lowly bowl, now its Orange. Don't believe the Hype. Take it one game at a time.

So this being the last week of the season do we have any good ideas what bowl game we will be winning? I've heard in no order everything: Belk, taxslayer, Detriot, Shrevport, music city, merryland.

No "good" ideas, largely because of the pool system in place. Lot of back-room deals will go on when the bowls are choosing from a lot of teams with similar records. I've heard all of those, as well as TaxSlayer in Jax.

"Exit light..."

The Independence Bowl would likely be against Florida, FWIW.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I could see the Independence against Florida or USCe.

I would be interested in either matchup

From some of the speculation I've seen, it could pretty much be any of them, but I'm hoping for Nashville for a fun trip or Belk for a cheap one... Annapolis would be pretty awesome too.

Music City would be nice or Independence against SEC team

I'd like Charlotte or Jacksonville they are both driveable from Coastal SC.

I'm all for Annapolis....DC Hokies would out in full force (easy 45 min drive).

Oh I'd definitely go to the MusicCity (doubt we go there) or the B'ham bowl (in-laws).

Sporting News and Phil Steele both have VT going to the Quick Lane Bowl against Illinois.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

That was last week. This week Steele has us playing Mississippi State in the Music City Bowl.

You sure? Here is Steele and here is Sporting News. Steele updated his yesterday and Sporting News updated their projections today.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I just pulled it up from his website and based it on the Dec 1st date on the left.

Your link looks more current because it has GaTech in the Orange Bowl, where they would project if they lost to F$U.

Something to note about both - both project Clemson to the Belk Bowl, which is an extremely short drive for all the Tiger fans. That also puts to bed the fallacy the Belk Bowl would love to have us, as any impartial observer could see Clemson would be the better get.

Historically, doesn't the Music City Bowl have the 7th or 8th best SEC team? If that is the case, I doubt Mississippi State would go there speaking to the fact that before they lost to Ole Miss they basically controlled their destiny to make it to the playoff.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

The bowl hierarchy changed completely this season. All the historical basis for ranking bowls has been wiped away. That's why Clemson could be objectively looked at as the favorite for the ACC team in the Belk Bowl, who used to have a selection much farther down the ranking.

There is about 0.0% chance that the Russell Athletic Bowl passes on Clemson after the Orange Bowl picks GT when FSU goes to the playoff.

As long as it is against a Power 5 team then I am down for whatever.

I don't want one of those lose-lose situations playing an AAC team. If we win, we were supposed to, if we lose, then we are a terrible team.

Hyping up Hokie Nation one video at a time.

We are a terrible team...we NEED a bowl win, period. Wanting a "name" opponent is BS this year

Undefeated against ranked opponents, just sayin'

We're like a Seth Greenberg team. We'll beat all the ranked teams we play. We'll also lose to all the bad teams we play as well.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Scot Loeffler walks out to the center of the stage, illuminated by a single spotlight. He reaches to the top of his weary head and pinches something with his thumb and forefinger. He slowly begins to pull it forward. Suddenly, the thing between his fingers catches the light, revealing its metallic nature, soliciting a few audible gasps from the crowd. He ever so slowly continues pulling it forward, through his forehead, then down the center of his face. Virginia Tech fans everywhere gasp in horror, the slow realization of what is unfolding worming its way into their collective conciousnesses. As the tiny teeth of the zipper part, the light falls upon what is underneath. A shiny, sweating, hairless head reflects more light than it should as the visage of an emaciated Seth Greenberg emerges from its cocoon like a perverse, grotesque butterfly. As the used up shell falls to the floor, the former basketball coach begins to laugh. The laugh starts barely audible, but slowly builds to a maniacal apex of rage and revenge. Then the laughter stops. Everything is quiet. So deafeningly quiet that it almost hurts the ears of everyone in attendance. The fans are hypnotized by a mixture of shock, terror, and disbelief. Finally, once the silence has become unbearable, Greenberg croaks through a rictus grin, "You thought you could get rid of me that easily!"

I would love to play WVU in a bowl game (somewhere where both fan bases can attend). I can guarantee WVU would sell almost all their alotted tickets, and we usually travel well for bowl games. Both teams showed flashes of potential in this season, and I do think this game would end in the 20s for both teams. Although I do not see any scenarios where these 2 teams would play, I would enjoy it.

I wonder if bowls would try to avoid VT vs. WVU or Tennessee so as not to undercut the regular season games coming up in 2016-17.

I don't think they care about that. Just as long as they can make money right now.

I'm rooting for whichever bowl puts us against an SEC team. I would be ok with a BIG 10 team too if we must.
