Head Coach Frank Beamer and the Virginia Tech football team announced today that the Military Appreciation/White Effect game will take place this Saturday when the Hokies take on East Carolina at noon. The football team will wear a special white helmet, and 25 of these helmets will be auctioned off online at hokiesports.com. The helmets are being worn to honor those who have served in the military, are currently serving, and those who have lost their lives or were injured in the line of duty. The Hokies are wearing white in support of the "White Effect" game and to promote literacy in the State of Virginia. All proceeds will go to Hermas Readers and the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

I will be bidding on one of those for my son for his christmas gift! That is cool!!!
I'll put in my buck o' five
you remember what they went for last year? I Imagine these will be more sought after I'm thinking 300ish?
The starting bid will be over $300. Not sure what last year's camo helmets went for, but I bought one of the 2012 camo helmets, and even getting one of the ones that finished with the lowest final bid, I paid nearly $700. I tried getting one of the fighting gobbler helmets after the Rutgers bowl game but gave up at some point in the $600s. Considering they are auctioning fewer of this version (only 25), I imagine they'll all go over $700 easy. I wouldn't be surprised if the cheapest one was over $900. The only way they will come "cheap" is if we lose.
These aren't hydrographic like some of the others have been so I'd imagine they'll start them cheaper. It's a white helmet (cheapest) with vinyl helmet decals. Regardless of how much they start the bidding, I'll agree with the other post that you are looking at $300+ To get an official VT one.
Bidding starts at $400

Auction just ended. Looks like the final bids ranged from $825 (#63- Laurence Gibson) to $1525 (#1- Isaiah Ford). It was a nice looking helmet, but that's pretty steep.
The qualifying bids on these helmets are typically $350. Just sayin'...
Good looking helmet. Like
these things are going to be uber expensive id say over 300+ I know a lot of players family order/bid for them
Didn't Andy Bitter already show us this in an other thread?
yeah right? drink joe!
I like it. It's fresh, clean, and still carries the core branding of VT. My biggest beefs with previous "special" helmets (except for the ones we wore against Rutgers) is that they were either a complete departure from traditional Tech branding (see, well... a good chunk of 2012) or they were busy/sloppy-looking (last year's Marshall game). These helmets have none of those issues. Plus, we've played pretty well in white recently. Let's hope that trend continues.
Those helmets from the Rutgers game need to come back every few years. Matte with the Fightin' Gobbler, so nice
I like it. Very patriotic. Very Hokie. Can't wait to see the stains of Pirate tears on it after the game.
#MERICA!!
Fuck Yeah!
comin again to save the motherfuckin day yeah!
#MURICA!!!
I just thought this was hilarious

I like it. Hopefully we were white uni's and white pants. Love the clean look of those 2009 pro combats.
Is there an American Flag stripe down the middle? I wish we could see another angle because these are easily my favorite "non-traditional" helmets I've seen thus far
That's sleek!
Here is the picture I've been using for years on my desktop at work:
Very similar design
And now it is mine as well!
Not sure what to think... Last time a team pulled out the stars and stripes filled logo white out military appreciation uniform set against ECU they beat the shit out of UNC.
Hope we fare better
I'm not sure I follow. I think you might have accidentally a word.
'MURICA.

sorta NSFW

He really loves his freedom
Let Freedom ring
Did someone say "ring?"
The Texas Tech coaching staff's heads are ringing after letting Brewer go
I've been waiting for this helmet/game since I saw it sitting on Ballein's desk back in May. It is pretty awesome looking in person.
I love have someone on the inside of Cassell.
So, um yeah, if you could go ahead and send us any important pictures before they're official...that would be grrrrreat (read in voice of Bill Lumbergh)
I'm pretty sure he posted a picture of this helmet in the "what will our uniforms look like" thread if I'm not mistaken.
Is the whole uni red white and blue? I like the helmet, not sure about a woke red white and blue uni.
With helmets like that, our team will be the flyover.
Kendall will be the flyover.
Jesus, those are sweet. i would definitely bid if i could afford one. ...ahh well
Gonna be comin out of the tunnel like this
Gonna get a full presidential pardon up in here.
Most of you know that I am active duty and take my Hokie Pride to whatever country they send me to, I hope the next time I go somewhere I will be taking one of these sweet helmets with me!!!!!!!!!!
As a Vet I can dig it, not sure I will bid on one afterwards though as most of them will be a shade of pirate blood red come saturday afternoon...
I can dig these. Clean, with the VT logo like #whitness promised.
On a side note, F$U is already altering their jersey and helmet, after such an uproar about the combo and how the helmets looked/performed/flaked/stickers peeled. Nelson: "Ha ha."

Anyone else think that the FSU unis looked like GT when the cameras were panned back?
I don't think you were the only one thinking that.
And from the sounds of things, you would think the NCAA was handling the uni changes for F$U from the get go.
My question is if Lane will actually be all white this weekend. Personally, I have no problem with what people wear, but if they are going to do a "white out" game, they should at least sell out to get fans to buy in. Was last year at Marshall (not a great showing) a fluke cause of the bad weather? Also, hopefully last weeks big win starts to fill those empty seats. Like Shane says, this team deserves to play in front of a sold out Lane Stadium.
We've gotten bad weather at least twice for the white out. While VT doesn't gouge the price for ponchos, they don't offer many white or clear options.
And it usually ends up being on Corps Homecoming, so the Corps alumni are stuck in their maroon polos.
As someone who generally still sits near or within the student sections whenever I get a chance to go to a game, I really don't mind it being rainy for white outs, and I appreciate the price gouging for ponchos.... Just sayin...
Except I was complementing Tech for not marking the ponchos up to something like $50 when it's pouring. The prices at the stadium were quite reasonable.
This is me right now:
Hands down, the longest gif I've ever witnessed.
Leg for you!
I would pull out the cliched 'TrueHokie' line to describe seasoned fans who go by Campus Emporium or VT Bookstore to buy quality Maroon or Orange Hokie ponchos that are thicker than a napkin. But I won't. I'll just say I'm not buying a white poncho for the off chance that one day some day it rains on White Effect day.
I did notice last year in the rain game - forget the opponent - that Lane wasn't charging too much for the ponchos. I want to say they were $5 or less, but I don't remember. Since I already had both my orange and maroon ponchos available.
So buying one of these. Just need to figure out who has the smallest head on the team.
I think they look pretty good. Just win in them and we'll all love them.
To be honest with you, these are kinda lame... Under Armour does a WAY better job at these type of "special" uniforms. Just take a look at Maryland's:

You're right, UA kicks Nike's teeth in. The stitching on that ball is sick
There is literally not one thing on that uniform set that shows they are for the University of Maryland. No school colors, no school logos, no school scrips. It looks like a generic UA uniform for one of their high school all star games, or at the very least, something one of the service academies should be wearing. People are going to be watching that game, and seeing highlights and pictures in the future wondering who the hell was playing. It might look cool to Maryland fans now, but big picture, its a miserable blunder by their licensing dept.
I think these look absolutely ridiculous. The Declaration of Independence, which is what the script writing looks like, wasn't signed in Maryland so why is it there? The Pentagon, which is what the star on the helmet looks to be copying, is in VIRGINIA. Again, Maryland Fail. There are attempts to make something look good, and then there's too much. Why do you need the Declaration of Independence on the bottom of your cleats? Stupid stupid stupid...
It's from the Star Spangled Banner, which was written outside of Ft McHenry, in Baltimore. Sept 13, 1814 was the date.
Clever, but still hideous.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/wp/2014/09/09/marylands-helmets-and-uniforms-will-feature-the-lyrics-to-the-star-spangled-banner/
Its not the Declaration, its the words to The Star Spangled Banner, which makes more sense, because nothing screams patriotism like positioning the lyrics to our national anthem in a way that every player on the roster is literally trampling all over them all game long.
As for the fort, its supposed to be Fort McHenry, and not the Pentagon. Which is nice, because I had literally absolutely no idea which one it was supposed to represent because all Revolutionary/Civil War forts have the same basic design. To their credit, there is another view that does show the word 'MARYLAND' across the front, so at least there is SOMETHING to show its for the Terps, but man, just an all around fail.
Okay, now that all makes more sense, but had I not known any of this, the Declaration and Pentagon were my initial interpretations. Still, this is a little much.
It's not the Pentagon, it's Ft. McHenry. The wording is the Star-Spangled Banner which was written by a Baltimore man, a prisoner on a British warship shelling Ft. McHenry, guarding the approaches to Baltimore Harbor.
BTW, the photos are taken at Ft. McHenry.
To a Marylander, these things are. Rey recognizable.
Is this supposed to be the Pentagon turned into a Turtle shape? How is that better than an American flag emblazoned within a VT? Is that supposed to be the Declaration of Independence written haphazardly on areas of the uniform where they didn't know what to do?
Why not just put a picture of George Washington riding a Eagle wiping his ass with a Union Jack. It makes as much sense as this design.
They are better off putting a picture of Charlie Kelly from Always Sunny In Philadelphia on the side of their helmets from the episode where he went "All America all over their asses".
Overdone UMD, overdone.
Ah...the Pentagon star is a turtle. Yeah, didn't see that at all. Further proving these are stupid.
haha, thanks for making my point below. It's the shape of Ft. McHenry, where the Star Spangled Banner was written (which is what the script is all over the uniform)
I'm not from Maryland. did not recognize this. Guess its cooler than I thought. But then they went WAAAAAY over the top with it, which I guess is UMD's new M.O.
Trying too hard to swim in Oregon's wake, IMO
Its like UA is realizing that there is really nothing you can do with what the University of Maryland has to offer, and is now just stretching for every bit of state history to try and find some kind of good design aesthetic. Its funny how they've completely moved away from any and all school logos on their uniforms and now rely completely on the flag motif, and now this.
I hope we see a Baltimore Aquarium themed uniform set for them.
For whatever reason, they've gone away from the "M" logo. Haven't used it prominently since 2000. The "Terps" is what has been branded on most of their unis unless it's "Maryland" written out.
I love the state flag, but there has been a big upcomance of the flag in the outline of everything, especially car stickers. Crabs, sailboats, anchors, ducks, everything. I think it can be used sparingly and tastefully, but a lot of things I see are just there because they can. Unfortunately, as awesome as the Maryland endzones look, the helmets and some of the striping make them look like crash test dummies.

Are these uniforms for the Ft. McHenry Star Spangled Banners?
I like them, but unless you knew beforehand - you'd have no idea that it was the University of Maryland out there.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/wp/2014/09/09/maryland...
It's a celebration of the 200th anniversary on Saturday.
Maryland now has the War of 1812 and Ft McHenry themed license plates, which I think are a little bit much too.
i have those license plates. they look dumb.
Which is why I have the Bay plates. Worth every bit of that $20.
This is an awesome uniform. Needs a Maryland "M" somewhere, but still super awesome nonetheless.
Any updates on the uni's?
