Brewer Embraces the Spotlight

SI published an article today about Brewer and how he's been thrust into the spotlight. So many great quotes in this story

"I said something along the lines of I'm ready to go ahead and do this and win a lot of football games here, and he jumped right out of his seat and came over and gave me a hug," Brewer said. "I was like, 'Did Frank Beamer just do that?' The Frank Beamer just jumped out of his seat and gave me a hug for committing to his school. How many kids have sat in this chair and committed to coach Beamer over the years? And he still gets up, comes over and gives me a hug?"

With just under 14 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and the Hokies leading 21-14, Brewer faced second-and-nine from his own 20-yard line. He scrambled for eight yards before taking a nasty hit. He crumbled to the ground and had a tough time getting up.

"I kind of got bent around and I was having a bad back spasm," Brewer said. "My back was just locked up. I had been hit in the head a few times. I was trying so hard to get up and some of the guys on the defense were saying, 'We got him, finally, he aint getting up.' Right when I heard that I was like, 'Screw that.' I just got back up."

Was quite literally about to post this.

Definitely a great interview piece with him, I like how it shows more of his transition to Blacksburg than we've seen before.

Also, like the anecdote how he's already quickly become a BMOC.

I think he's a man after French's heart with him going fishing the Monday after every Win. Here's to hoping he gets 15 great fishing days in this season.

Seriously, the way he got up from those hits was truly legendary.

Nothing like some good clean masturbation humor.

THAT was one of the most hi-larious episodes ever. I was wondering when somebody was gonna post up a gif related to it. I didn't want to be the first one. You sir...YOU are a Hokie hero in my book (but then again you always were).

True Hokies STICK IT IN!!!

I was trying so hard to get up and some of the guys on the defense were saying, We got him, finally, he aint getting up.

If that's true, Urban needs to have a talk w/ his defensive group. That's just a shitty attitude, I don't care how frustrated you are, and it leads to trying to hurt someone instead of making the tackle.

What makes you think Urban wasn't the one instructing them to play like that?

If you can't tell, I don't exactly have the highest of respect for the man.

After all the 3rd down conversions, I am sure they were hoping he stayed down. Little do they know, that he may have stayed down, if O State's D-Line had kept their mouths shut. But, Brewer is a tough Texan.

Killing the QB is very common. There is a difference b/t hard, painful clean tackles, that cause an injury and intentionally hurting a player. Bud's boys have killed many a QB over the years. Can't remember what season (sometime in the 2000's), the VT defense put the starting QB out of a game for like 5 or 6 straight games. And were very proud of it.

Nothing dirty, just hard football.

Yeah, it wasn't a dirty hit, unlike the bowl game against UCLA last year. I'm glad that happened though, because it gave the coaches a chance to start evaluating the qb position for this year.

Can't say I was glad it happened, as I think LT3 would have given the team the best chance for a Win.
But I get your point.

I think there was one where we ended up hurting a UNC QB. The guy before Bryn Renner, I think. Forget his name.

So did he! And that's a good hit

TJ Yates for UNC? Also, reminds me of that hit Brandon Flowers laid on Christian Ponder of FSU...good and clean, but wrung his bell nonetheless.

Carry Me Back

I could be wrong, but I feel like the hit was against the FSU starting QB at the time, Drew Weatherford. And I think that hit then took him out of the game, and Ponder came it.

Not saying it is or isn't a dirty hit.

Just a dirty attitude that could lead to dirty hits.

I feel ya.

I feel like that's just the mindset all these guys have out there. Most of them I doubt actually want to hurt someone, but I think it's kinda ignorant to think that our guys aren't talking similar trash out there when we're on defense.

It's not a pretty thought, but I mean you gotta somehow get yourself in a mental state to play this violent game.

Of course this point leads to another one about how this may correlate to recent off the field events, but I won't go there.

Most of them I doubt actually want to hurt someone, but I think it's kinda ignorant to think that our guys aren't talking similar trash out there when we're on defense.

I agree. It seems like defenders on any team dream of knocking guys out of games. If I could play, I'd want to hurt anyone that dared step on the field against me. I wouldn't want to injure anybody though.

I see it like getting a starting pitcher out of a game in baseball. You (arguably) have a better chance against the bullpen. As long as the hits are clean, which they were on Saturday, I don't have a problem with that attitude. They're trying to hit him enough that he has difficulty playing or can't get back into the game mentally or physically. Or even just to the point where he's afraid to run because he doesn't want to get hit. Brewer's toughness really shows when the next play he ran again, telling the defense "You don't scare me."

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

Plus. Every hit and every time the guy needs to get back up adds to his fatigue.
By the time the 4th Q comes around he's low on blood sugar, doesn't quite have the same arm strength and fine motor skills and has a tougher time making decisions.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Did Frank Beamer just do that?' The Frank Beamer just jumped out of his seat and gave me a hug for committing to his school.

Love that... THE Frank Beamer.

Even Texas knows whats up!

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Brewer is one BAMF for taking all the hits he did AND still getting up after each one. It was a sight to behold, even if I wasn't at that game.

He literally put the team on his back.

this makes me like brewer even more, im so glad we have him. i think he brings an intensity that the offense really needed.

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

I wouldn't call what he has intensity. I would call it confidence. He's cool and collected. He doesn't let mistakes rattle him. How many QBs do you know can take a hit that shakes them up, take another 2 plays later that results in a fumble that leads to the opposition's tying TD, and then lead a team downfield for the go-ahead TD away from their home field? He's not jumping up and down, getting in his players' face to motivate them. He's leading them through confidence and believing in them as much as they believe in him. That sort of chemistry is what helps players feel responsible for each other, not just being vocal and animated.

Intensity doesn't always have to be overt.

Sometimes quiet storms are the most dangerous.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

What do I have to do to get a hug from The Frank Beamer???

I don't know, how is your arm strength and 40 time?

Frank Beamer is an emotional guy. He gets excited every time he gets a new playing on his team. That feeling never gets old.

I just need a picture with him. That's all I need.

Shouldn't it be just "Crush" for you?

I wish I couldve been part of a team that did something like that, former Virginia Tech and current Arizona Cardinals quarterback Logan Thomas told SI.com on Thursday.

Sad Logan

Ok...this made me really sad for a minute. But then....

At the same time Im thoroughly excited for the guys who are still there. Some of my best friends are still on that team and are still playing. Its just awesome to watch them thrive.

Happy Logan

Logan Thomas was, is, and forever shall be THE animal champion. The only thing disappointing about seeing all these freshmen thrive (Bucky, Ford, Phillips, McKenzie, Williams) is knowing that LT3's career would have ended much differently if he had had those guys around him. Glad he can be happy about his friends having success. Hope he knows he was a huge part of laying the groundwork for what happened Saturday night.

OK, whoever is downvoting these really needs to review the Community Guidelines.

Do not down vote for disagreeing with someone's opinion.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Some of Logan's detractors don't realize, or maybe refuse to acknowledge, he was a large reason we had anything semblance of an offense the past two years.

How does he not have a Hokie Passport? That's gotta be a mistake right? They make those in about 10 minutes.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

I don't know how it works for transfers, and even as far as transfers go, he's a special case, but you need your ID for your meal plan, bus pass, and access into certain buildings so he has to have it, right?

If not, I would suggest that all the ladies have an opportunity to get into his good graces by buying him dinner.

Shoot, what you mean, ladies?

Hahaha^^^I'm with you there

I was a transfer, I came for transfer orientation over the summer and had it made. People lose theirs all the time and have to get new ones made. Also you need your ID number for classes and other things you need to do through the school.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

You get your ID number when you enroll, it's not like the first time you see it is when you get your Hokie P. But yes, it does sound ridiculous that he doesn't have his, he probably should have gotten it during the summer at orientation or something, if not when he arrived on campus in May.

I think the article says he is taking his classes online. I guess I can see where he could get away without having it.

Its been a long time since I have seen someone with his awareness level. He is one of those qbs who seems to be in the right spot to just escape. Of course its great to cheer for one and not scream profanity at the tv when they play against us.

...by "it" factor, if you mean he reminds you of a football playing QB version of college Steph Curry, then I'd have to agree with you. The irony is there. This surely feels like our redemption song. #GoHokies

Two girls built up the courage to ask for a picture with Brewer

Did the girls know he was the quarterback of the football team, or did they think Zac Effron was filming in SWVA?

🦃 🦃 🦃

I'm convinced that if the hokies had the same skilled players and limited special team mistakes , they would've beat Alabama last year.

If the Hokies had caught more than 1-in-5 pass attempts.....that would've helped.
