When you defeated the number 8 team in the country in their own stadium, you deserve consideration to be the top 25 team in the country even after one loss. Critics are quick to dismiss VT as a good team, but this team has the talent to silence people if they limit their mistakes.
Is Virginia tech still a top 25 team after losing to ECU?

Yes. But I dont want this team near the top 25 yet. They play better with a chip on their shoulders.
no they will not be ranked.
we lost at home to a team outside of the power 5.
we will not be ranked.
No, and with all do respect it is kinda is pointless discussing it. If we win, we will be ranked again eventually and if we lose we won't. It will work itself out. Besides, rankings don't really mean anything until November.
I mostly agree with this statement. Rankings do carry a tiny bit of meaning, though.
Rankings make it easier to find the game on the scoreboard and schedule.
Ranking are very important. Rankings are what gets teams into better bowl games and national championships.
In November. I think that's what was being got at. Right now are ratings can shoot up or down depending on what ECU, Ohio State, Ourselves, William and Mary, as well as the entire slate of teams in front of us.
In November it counts where you're at the most yes, but being in the rankings in September then falling out is important too. A team in the top 10 is going to think rankings are the most important thing in the world right now. Relatively, any no-loss team should think that. Next Saturday rankings should be important. We need to strive to win as many of the next games as possible so that we can get back in the rankings for November.
Is it possible for us to be ranked? I think so, but I would also give ECU some votes as well to make it happen.
Are we actually a top 25 caliber team? Need to play a few more games (like 9).
31st in coaches poll
Still higher than ECU and UVA.
You mean the same poll that had us 19 and OSU 18 after we beat them?
I wouldn't put too much credit in their rankings.
I'm surprised that the Coaches poll even stays around. As I've said before, wouldn't any decent coach only care about 12-15 teams? (Their own, plus the 11 or 12 FBS teams on the schedule, plus up to three post-season teams.)
Why would they be wasting their time to rank everyone else instead of planning on how to beat them?
Coaches don't waste their time ranking other teams. They have assistants fill out their sheets. That is why the Coaches' Poll is even more meaningless than most people give it credit for. Once the AP Poll comes out, people pretty much ignore it.
No.
No, we shouldn't be. We weren't ready for it.
But ECU should be in the poll somewhere between 20-25. They'll get there after beating UNC next weekend.
No and we deserve to stay out for a while.
No, and now that we are into our schedule, there are no other 'name' wins we can claim until we get to the ACCCG. Since we don't have either F$U or Clemson on our schedule, we will operate outside of the national interest zone until the end of October. If we run the table between now & then, beating Pitt & Miami on Thursday ESPN games, we'll be ranked again. We'd be 7-1 after the Miami game, and we could move into the Top 25 with that. Even after that, however, our conference schedule is so flaccid that we're not going to impress anyone with wins over Wake, BC, or UVa. So the eager tracking of the poll is done until the very end of the regular season. That's what happens when you lose focus at inopportune times.
but yo, if BC and UVa do what they did yesterday all season long, we may have something worth talking about...
don't be so quick to overlook BC, they just beat a top 10 team themselves.
The way BC and UVA have been playing, I don't think it would be completely out of the realm of possibility for both of them to be ranked when we play them. If we can run the table, it may not be as unimpressive as a lot of people are thinking. Combine that with a highly ranked opponent in the ACC championship, and at one loss, we may be able to squeeze our way back into the playoff conversation. Of course, that's just wishful thinking at this point.
As VT fans, we should know to never overlook Pitt either. They look to be improving under Paul Chryst and already beat BC. They have been able to pound teams using their running game with James Connor and have a dangerous receiver in Tyler Boyd. I would say that Duke, Pitt, UVA, and BC have all looked more dangerous than Miami and UNC so far this season. Despite not having Clemson, FSU, or Lousville on the schedule, the ACC looks to be improved overall and I think we have a lot of tough games ahead of us.
Oh believe me, I'm not counting on us winning out the rest of the season. I actually expect us drop at least one more game. I'm just saying big things can still happen if the team can stay focused and play to their full potential.
AP is out and we have 0 votes. Not saying we're world beaters or anything but ECU is a better team than they will get credit for and that OSU win is very quality.
And to show their idiocy. UGA loses to USCe but stays one spot ahead of them. Yeah that makes total sense.
I could've sworn that VT was about 28th or so in the AP poll I saw, 31st in the coaches poll... not that either matter at this point
29th, we're getting 54 votes. as you say it doesnt matter.
beat gt
I saw that, and just remembered how last week, the poll got updated in some places before the "other receiving votes" section did. Since we were in the poll last week, we wouldn't have been in that section.
I find it hard to believe that we fall that far after a 7 point loss, even to an unranked team, especially after knocking off #8.
Virginia Tech is always a top 25 team - even when they are not.
We are not far out of the top 25 at this point, if we continue to win we will be back in the polls in a few weeks. The rankings almost always sort themselves out for the most part, our job is to keep winning.
Bad teams still in the top 25:
UCLA, USC, Nebraska
Teams still in the top 25 because they haven't played anybody yet:
Auburn, Baylor, Ole Miss, AZ State, Mizzou, K State, BYU, Nebraska
Teams that look pretty good outside the top 25:
VT, ECU, Pitt, BC, WVU, UVA
We'll see how this goes.
Did you say UVA? They have a good defense but they are not a top 25 team.
They are not a team to overlook this year.
Sadly, with the way both us and them have been playing this year, if they were up next for us, I don't think we would win. Our OL would get eaten alive by that defense right now, and Brewer would spend most of the game on his backside. Their DL alone will give us fits all game long later in the year, and with the way our OL has been struggling, it does not bode well for us in that game.
^ this. I'm glad they're the last game on the season as of right now
I can't believe in doing this, but they haven't looked bad this year.
i believe they would've beatty UCLA if their coach weren't an idiot and put Johns? in sooner.
they held their own against UCLA despite that, and took down a good looking Louisville team.
You have to at least give them some credit, NOBODY thought they would beat Louisville.
I'd like them to be ranked when we meet
I didn't expect them to beat Louisville, but I expect BYU to put them in place. Taysom Hill is legit. Watching him play, he does things I expected Hundley to do to UVA. Now Hill has his chance to learn from Hundley's shortcomings in that game.
They're always number one in the Leonard Rankings.
If they wanted to put us #25 or so, I could live with it.
ECU gave USCe all they could handle. And they just beat UGA. ECU has some talent offensively and their nose tackle ate VT up. But the Voters will go with a kneejerk reaction which I can also live with.
I'd like to see them handle GT and Western Michigan and we can be 4-1 and see where everyone else is at.
I wouldn't expect to crack the top 25 until after UNC personally. GT has struggled thus far and Western Michigan will do nothing for us unless we obliterate them
True, those games won't do much for us. But when teams like UVA and BC are taking higher teams down, we might creep. But well earned is better than some voter gifting us a slot-voting position.
Like ...say..oh I don;t know..ranking OSU ahead of VT even though they lost at home
I am aware UVA's win was in conference. But the ACC is winning some ranked games this year.
I would say 24 25. If you look at the rankings USC lost to Boston College who got 22 votes this week, last week it was 0 votes. So USC only dropped from 9 to 17... We lost to ECU (not a pretty loss) who got 44 votes, last week it was 0. VT dropped from 17 to lets say 29. ECU will be sneaky sneaky team and once they beat UNC they can run the table and it will look better for us in the end.
Does that make any sense? Not at all... a 3-0 nebraska team that almost lost to Mcnese State an FCS school and had 2 cupcakes is 24th, but a VT team that beat a #8 team and an FCS team and lost to an ECU team that will easily be a top 20 team, but now VT is unranked? Makes a lot of sense.. not
IMO I don't care about rankings but one can look at it an pick it apart like a cupcake. Thankful for the 4 team playoff, would love an 8 team playoff but that will come.
While I love the idea of rankings to setup marquee matchups, it is way too early to base anything off of rankings. This early in the season the only thing rankings do is give fans something to talk about between weekends. After week six is when the rankings actually start to matter and accurately reflect the landscape of college football.
We will find out at the end of the year. One game at a time for now. Being ranked has no bearing on performance.
This is a general request and by no means directed at you HokieBlitz but can we please stop with all of these "What If" threads? Please?
What if we didn't? What if we did? What if we can? What if we can't? What if, "what if" is the new "how bout it"?
