I got called into work yesterday morning so I threw on my vt shirt and left. Could not have my pregame Oktoberfest beer and it gets worse....
I'm so sorry hokie nation that I was unable to change my shirt after we got down 21-0. My #5 t shirt got us through the osu game but didn't have the power to overcome that deficit. I know if I had been at home I could've changed we would've won.
I saw in the thread for the game people were changing shirts after the 1st quarter. I'm sorry I couldn't.
I've been around sports all my life and everyone I've ever encountered has some traditions/superstitions.What are your not so crazy superstitions on gameday?

In 2012, I realized that when I wore orange shirts, we lost. I was wearing an orange shirt during the Duke game where we went down 20 points. Then my son, who was just over two weeks old at the time, spit up on me. I changed into a maroon shirt and we got the first win in my son's life.
I totally forgot to wear my old school (old school being Mach Harris time frame) #1 jersey. I had my maroon Hokie Football shirt on. We went down 21-0 and I thought crap I don't even have my jersey on. I had to leave for my son's football game with like 3 min left in the fourth so I missed the tying score and glad I missed ECU's comeback. My wife just asked if I wanted to know what was going on in the game and she said I didn't want to go back and watch the game (which was recorded). Obviously I figured at that point we had lost.
That's exactly what I was wearing too for every game this season. I thought to myself before I put it on that something was telling me to wear my old school Vick jersey. I should have listened to my senses.
As I outlined here, I wear a VT headband. At the end of the first quarter I realized I wasn't wearing it. Put it on and checked the position of the symbol the rest of the game.
Wait, that's two games in a row forgetting the headband?
I know, sorry.
I don't want any close calls today. I hope the headband is in place. :)
Ugh, didn't even think of it again.
During the anOSU game, my wife went into our bedroom sometime around the 3rd quarter and they scored twice to tie the game. She came back to the living room later, we scored again to retake the lead, and I made her spend the rest of the game in the living room.
Reminds me of that Bud Light commercial when the dude is in the basement and they scored, so he went back down to the basement - sacrifices.
I will be drinking Landshark for every game from now on. I was drinking it during the OSU game but not the ECU game. That's no coincidense...I take full responsibility for this past weeks loss.
I always wear my 2006 Orange Effect shirt. That shirt has been to a lot of games
I wore black under armor socks for all of our losses in 2012. Black socks are now forever banned from Lane Stadium. Also, we're 2-0 when I wear my new retro maroon #3 jersey over my new VT Alumni shirt. I may ignore the orange effect game for this reason.
A buddy of mine has a gray VT hat that he wore during the 2007 BC game, then during that one random, rainy Saturday in 2010 where I don't recall if anything happened, but we decided the hat was bad luck. He never wore it to a game again. Any game that he attended, sans hat, was a victory. Screw my scientific background regarding correlation and causation, this means something.
My brother-in-law has been to 3 games: 2010 and 2012 GT and 2011 Miami.
Buy him season tickets.
I have a ticket for him this weekend. I have a friend coming up from Atlanta who will be upset by this, but really, it's clearly much more important for your brother in-law to be there.
Alas, he moved to Florida a few months after the GT Labor Day game.
Besides, even if he did stick around, we wouldn't be going to the GT game this year. I've been to all of the GT games at home since we joined the ACC, and all of them have been stressful in some capacity (except for that first one pre-PJ). I need a break from that.
I drink a Sprite in the second half every game since I got one at the 2010 ECU game and we came back to win.
I got one at the W&M game this year and as soon as I took my first sip Shai scored.
So for the first two games of the season, I drank exactly 2 Fat Tires per quarter. I don't particularly like Fat Tire, but it's a decent beer and it was what I had after several bachelor parties as leftovers, so it was free.
For this game I started with a PBR. Once we went down 21-0 I swapped to High West Rendezvous Rye whiskey and never looked back.
I am currently considering crowdfunding for Fat Tire for every game.
I'm conflicted:
I have had Shiner Bock for every game so far, but the mojo apparently wore off, so I'm going for a different brew this weekend.
My brand new VT shirt was also 2-0, but I forgot (noon kickoff's!) and didn't change until the 2nd qtr, but too late.
So I'm not sure if the shirt is now cursed, or I should put it on pre-kickoff.
Wear the shirt before kickoff and either 1) switch beers or 2) drink more of said beer.
I take some blame for the loss too. 1) I realized I didn't have my wedding band on until the 2nd quarter and 2) I couldn't drink as much as I did for OSU given the damn noon kickoff.
just saying...in Lane our team is something like 30-2 when both my brother and I attend the game. we were undefeated up until i started telling that to everyone then mother nature proceeded to pimp smack me with the jmu game. regardless we still have an excellent home record sense. The shibe magic must continue when he comes down this weekend.
I started thinking about what I could have done that caused the ECU game. Then I realized I was wearing an orange and maroon stripped sweater from GAP. Last game I remember wearing it to was the 16-13 win over UVa. I should have burned it then since it was closer than it should have been. I only bring it out when I have to attend events on gameday in which a jersey or t-shirt would not suffice. It has been washed, but I am not sure I can wear it again.
This year's ECU loss was my bad, you guys. I was at Georgia Tech/Georgia Southern (wife's a Southern grad). I can (begrudgingly) miss a VT game on television and things generally turn out okay. But, if ever I'm present in another team's stadium while a Hokie game is going on, we lose.
Every. Fucking. Time.
If it makes anyone feel better, the wife said I'll NEVER be forced to miss a VT game to be in another stadium, so there's that.
So you're saying we're going to run the table the rest of the way, right?
That's my bad too. I went to the CMU/Syracuse game and recorded the VT game instead of staying home and cheering the Hokies on. I did wear my VT cap to the game but I guess that was not enough to off-set the bad karma I created.
It used to be if I watched the game with my son in my lap, we won. Always. If I watched the game w/ my dad, we lost. Always. My son is 10 and I can't keep him in lap the whole game anymore. But I still avoid knowing whether my dad is watching now, as we live 3 states away from each other currently.
However, I did realize something else. I have this old #22 jersey I bought back when Lee Suggs was toting the rock for the Hokies. I can't remember not winning when I wore it. I had it on at 2011 Miami, Logan went off on them. Had it on for vs. anOSU, and we win. I had it on while watching Tyrod's miracle vs. Nebraska.
I did not have it on while we were playing ECU. I was actually busy working in the yard and trying to get a bunch of other chores done so we could head out to spend the night and Sunday at a Lake House on Lake Sinclair. I guess I jinxed us. D*mnit!
For years, my dad and I never wore Redskins stuff during Redskin games...we didn't even drink out of Skins cups. My dad would even go so far to use the random Dallas mug we had. (I'm not sure exactly how we got that one, I think my mom picked it up living in Texas in the 70s.)
Granted, it wasn't a 100% science since the Redskins were pretty bad regardless during long stretches.
We gave up on that around 2012, especially the season ending beatdown of the Cowboys. That "curse" seems to be broken.
It never translated to Tech football, though. I think because I have a direct connection to VT, not just a football fan.
I've come to notice that when watching a game from my house or a friend's house we always tend to score or make a huge play whenever I leave the room to use the bathroom. However it only works when I actually have to go (I've tested just leaving the room). So now I drink as much as possible to have to go to the bathroom as much as possible during the games. I miss the plays live, but that's what highlights are for so long as it makes us win.
I wore my 2007 ACC championship shirt on Saturday, and I'm now convinced it is cursed. I just can't bring myself to burn it.
My wife sat down and watched the ECU game this year, first game she has just sat there and just watched. She has now been banished.
My wife is totally bad luck...except in person. The Hokies always win when we go to the game together.
It'll get after ya.
I always wear my faded VT shirt to work on Friday then my Hokie Stone tee shirt for game day.
I hear that people throw paper airplanes for good luck nowadays.
I take blame, too. I bought a new hairband with Virginia Tech on it to wear this season. I had worn the same outfit with the hairband, my VT earrings, VT bracelet, and my Buzz's bunch bracelet for both W&M and OSU. I tried everything during the ECU game; changing seats, kicking my hubby out of the living room, rubbing my bracelets and nothing seemed to work. It wasn't until later that night when I went to take my hairband off, and realized I had been wearing it backwards. Sorry I let you all down. I take full responsibility and swear it will NEVER happen again.
I hate when I wear my VT earrings backwards.
Orange and maroon ponytail holder, check. VT earrings, check. LT3 jersey (or is it now a GS3 jersey?) -- either way, check. VT temporary tattoo carefully applied to face -- oh crap I forgot my face tattoo! Darn noon game, twisted my head like a pretzel. I'm sooooo sorry :(
I'm thinking of adding these to the ensemble. Too much?
I'm usually never surprised to see random VT memorabilia. This takes it to an entirely different plane of existence.
I thought I'd seen some off-the-wall Hokie attire... but these put them all to shame.
Bravo.
Just enough
I did a triathlon Saturday morning. On every Triathlon Saturday for me for the past 10 yrs during football season the Hokies have won...until this weekend. (I did one on OSU Saturday as well.)
I firmly believe that the 10.5 pt spread, the Mission Accomplished T-Shirts, and the Helmets completely blanketed the triathlon JuJu.
During my dorm years, every time I played "Fat Bottomed Girls" on my record player (had to be my specific vinyl on my specific sound system) on the day of a home game, we won.
PS - This was in 2011-12, so the vinyl part was cool/mystical
I'm guessing you skipped the Clemson game?
I'd like to apologize right now for ECU. When the 4th quarter came around, I rally capped it up and we scored twice. I then proceeded to take it off right before ECU never made that last drive because they weren't actually there playing. We had a bye last week, right?
Leg for that fantastic signature as well.
I got a new maroon #11 Fuller jersey for this season. We won the first two games when I wore it, but lost last week when I wore white. I know its not a huge representation, but that jersey isn't coming off again.
I vote you can take it off to wash it.
Same game day garb: maroon Nike coach's polo (with the orange stripe across the chest), gray Nike "Beamerball" t-shirt underneath, jeans or cut-off khaki shorts, lucky maroon and almost-orange boxers, maroon hat. I really need to add this season's white/maroon striped Nike coach's polo to the rotation, because it's just gorgeous.
I have a correct orange color Nike performance Tee I wear under one of several different maroon Tees. A RR hat I wear to each game.
I also drink a bourbon on the walk to the stadium.
I did not wear the shirt because White Effect. I did not wear the hat. I did not drink the bourbon on the way to the stadium.
It is ALL my fault. All of it, every dram, gram and lb.
I feel I bear a share of the responsibility for the loss Saturday.....the maroon VT T-shirt I wore for the first two games was dirty, and wore my white VT T-shirt instead. Laundry will be done before Saturday.
Sounds like the White Out screwed up a bunch of people.
On the karma front, I've never been a fan of the White Out, Black Out, or (Insert Color) Effect promotions.
You're just asking for trouble.
I don't have problems with Orange Effect, especially if it's a short sleeve and one of the early games. Everyone's usually wearing orange anyway since it's the cooler (temp wise) of our two colors.
Doing Maroon Effect later on when it's cooler works, because even if people need to layer, there are more maroon hoodies and jackets than orange. And generally, Maroon Effect has gone well for us, outside of Miami '05 and Clemson '11.
I watched the anOSU game alone with my fiance. She went for a run in the 3rd quarter when we gave up points. She got back and sat down and Bucky caught the TD pass.
This past weekend she left (woke up at 4:00 AM on a Saturday to take her to the airport) for a medical mission trip to Honduras, so she didn't watch with me. I blame Honduras in general.
We have always taken a pregame shot at our tailgate (Big White Tent in the grass in Lot 3, come see us!) and we forgot tequila (we haven't not had tequila for 10 years) for the ECU game...
On top of that I have always taken a bourbon shot, specifically Wild Turkey Rare Breed, and recently upgraded to WTRB Single Barrel this season. It worked for W&M and anOSU, but I left it at the house for the ECU game and had to settle for WT101. I also forgot my class ring and my lucky underwear (this is a real thing).
This one was on me y'all.
We'll need you to do 10 shots wearing only your class ring and underwear in Lot 3 for the Thursday Night Miami game for repentance.
Oh man be careful what you wish for!
Please do not down vote, but I did break a cardinal Hokie sin:
I did not have a glass of bourbon before the ECU game, but did before the OSU and W&M game.
I didn't have my usual pre-game bourbon either. That will never happen again.
I used to just wear my 2007 homecoming maroon effect shirt with the old Eddie Royal Maroon jersey, maroon VT hat.
Now i feel that it has spilled over to what i eat for breakfast and if I have read the entire Andy Bitter live chat from Thursday. I have a problem and am working on it.
**I was at a funeral and had a crappy breakfast and did not read all of last weeks live chat...I'm sorry guys.
Last year during the UNC game, I was behind the wheel driving somewhere for the entire first half or so when we jumped out to a big lead. So the next week was the Pitt game, and I decided to drive around again even though I didn't have anywhere particular to be. Kalvin Cline scored a TD while I was in the car. Then I did it again for the Duke game, but as we all know the results were different. I will not be driving this year.
