Linebackers 5-7 yards off the line of scrimmage, secondary 10-12 yards off the receivers, deeper safeties, less than 2 minutes to drive the length of the field, and getting pressure with only 4 rushers. But yeah, I guess there is a chance the offense turned it on at that exact time.
Edit: But I must give them credit. In years past it wasn't guaranteed for the offense to move the ball against the prevent. I'm glad that the offense took advantage of the opportunity and moved the ball the length of the field for a score!!!!! They looked good doing it!

All around, I'm pretty happy with the way the half went! Defense gave up some big plays, but stopped them when it counted. Offense moved the ball decently. I felt like the run game started to get going a little bit near the end of the half. Brewer only sacked once. Aside from the one bad interception, I feel like VT has been playing pretty well. I would like to see less 3rd and longs. Here's to VT coming out fired up for the 2nd half!!!!

So athletic they don't need holes to run through! And the QB, he can thread needles and he's pretty daggon good at protecting the ball. Well, defense gave up some plays today; however, offense was horrible and should have had 40+ points. Hopefully coaches make some changes to see who really wants to play. Running backwards and throwing balls up in the air is not acceptable.
We lost that one, they did not win it. I don't get as upset if the other team beats us, I hate when we beat ourselves.
Why the fuck didn't we let them score a touchdown once they got that first down? Are we that retarded? The way we did it, left us with 0.01% chance of winning.

Bud Foster has fell flat on his face the last two games. Last week refusing to change his game plan which was consistently getting torched. GT in obvious passing situations running 1-man routes and we're leaving guys 1-on-1 with no help. Awful job

I don't think there's anything worth counting on. Run game disappears as the game winds down despite the chunks gained leading up to it. INTs on poor decisions. Secondary and front 7 getting hit with big plays. Special teams is lacking and more blocks in the back than I know what to do with. I want to hang our hat on something, but I can't find anything.

Sooooo, let's recap this shitstorm...Offensive line was horrible, too many penalties (and stupid ones at that), defense folded at critical points of the game, and most importantly our QB is apparently a turnover machine to the point that he's starting to make Logan Thomas look like a master decision maker.
Im really starting to hate Brewer dude just plays like Mike Ocain is coaching him, I find it so hard to believe this scrub won a state championship in Texas under Chad Morris.

Man, I don't even know what to think. One thing is for sure - this one is on the offense. You can't ask your defense to go out there, time and time again, against GT's attack and need perfection. Breakdowns happen. Kendall straight-up fell down once to spring their WR. Riley read coverage wrong. None of that happens if the offense can move the ball. The illegal substitution penalties are unforgivable mistakes. When you get yourself backed down the field by 100 yards over the course of the game, you're going to lose. I don't know if that's on the players or the coaches, or both, but it's damning us.
The turnovers, man, the turnovers...I just don't get what was going through Brewer's mind on the INTs.
ECU I could come to terms with. They just flat beat us. This one hurts worse than any loss since maybe Maryland or Duke last year. We just continually set ourselves up for failure. Going to be a much longer season than I thought it would be.
Yup. This was an awful loss. Awful. But we had like three of these types of games last year. Gotta regroup next week and then try to string together some conference games. The season ain't over though.

I'm starting to wonder if Frank doesn't suffer a little from Andy Reid Syndrome (eg stubborn refusal to change, crippling complacency etc). I go back to being up by 7, with the football, sitting on 2nd and 2, behind and OL that is finally showing some push.
And we throw a pass 6 yards behind the line of scrimmage, and end up with a 3rd and 8.
That's just not the kind of risk I want for a 2nd down play where we just need to make a first down.
I understand it's an easy pass -- even so, it was damn near picked off, because we'd run a ton of those screens.
That right there was the play more than any other that makes me question what our offensive identity is supposed to be.

We didn't come out flat. We played great in the first half. Brewer had over 200 yards through the air and a completion percentage above 60. Second half just was completely different
Not pushing the end of the world button like everyone seems to be doing right now, but I really didn't see this one coming. I knew ECU was going to be a tough out but didn't think we'd struggle this much and eventually lose to GT. UVA (surprisingly) looking good and GT undefeated...we have a lot of ground to make up in the division now. Nothing is impossible, but we have now have dug a very respectable hole to climb out of.

I absolutely hate penalties in the red zone. We shot ourselves in the foot today.

Brutal, brutal finish for the 2nd week in a row. Brewer has done a lot of good things, but his misses and mistakes are so brutal at critical points. Feel p frustrated by the seemingly pressure decisions the coaching staff has made in terms of prep with regards to the secondary and run game.
Worst part has to be that we had plenty of chances to win this game, and that we've been in such tight games, nothing comes easy for us right now.
I lost count of the stupid penalties that cost us the game. Illegal substitutions, blocks in the back, offsides, holding.... things that are so easily avoidable. Look at the one block in the back on Stroman's awesome punt return. We had momentum and, even if Stroman had been tackled where he caught the ball, we had decent field position. Instead, we started at the 10. Later, Isaiah Ford (who played very well most of the game) had a first down in the middle of the field, then tried to get cute and juked backwards, losing a yard. Then, it was 2 penalties and a pick-6. We just couldn't get out of our own way today. We had every opportunity to win this game comfortably, but did everything possible to lose. This one hurts.
I agree with your sentiment, but until I see otherwise, I still maintain there was no block in the back on the Stroman return.
And the officials missed one clear block in the back on GT's long return, and probably could have called another on that same return. Both blocks being instrumental in him getting loose.

Yeah, I was less than impressed with the officiating crew. As an official, I can say it's hard to really call a game evenly, but there were a few in there that were just so inconsistent (late hits, illegal blocks, etc.) That said, this VT team did plenty enough to win, but just made horrible mistakes at the worst possible time. Did just enough to lose.
Pretty much sums it up. I'd also ad d in the poor tackling and the spotty offensive line play. I'm not sure if these issues are attributable to the coaches or if these are problems that recruiting has to fix. Unfortunately it's probably a little of both.
Seems like ever time we start getting positive yards on offense or get in a rhythm like a couple of rushes for positive yards or passes to the edge for 8-9 yards we go the opposite on the next play. And, please stop those jet sweeps with Newsome as everyone has watched that film and knows he getting the ball, along with those stretch plays with Coleman they didn't work last year nor so far this year. Why can't we recruit and coach O-line players that "lesser" schools have year over year.

I looked at the numbers. Including brewers fumble against osu he is on a pace for 27 turnovers this year. It's completely unacceptable. If the qb competition in the fall was as close as e coaches said it was, it may be time to make some decisions. I have a hard time believing that we have three qbs who would make those kinds of decisions consistently.

So I've got to say, this went about as I expected. The Defense is young. Getting these guys exposed to GT will be good for next year. As for Brewer, hopefully he will improve as the year progresses.
Really sad. Leadership at the QB position can really change the course of a season. As brewer slips into darkness you can feel both sides of the ball doing the same. That game was just poor all around. When we beat OSU it felt like Beamer ball had an injection of life. After watching the last 3 games has been a roller coaster. Preseason, it felt like we were on our deathbed and the doctor gave us 1 week to live then the doctor said actually you'll be fine (OSU win)then came back and said actually we made a mistake you're going to in a year (ecu) and then followed up promptly by an actually you're going to die tomorrow.
Keep in mind, the guy's been in the system all of 2 months. He's repeatedly shown the toughness and leadership to pull this team out of some really rough situations, some of which were his fault, some of which weren't. I think we'll see him play better down the stretch as he gets more comfortable in the system, but the bigger issue is the non-talent issues we keep seeing (formation penalties, substitution penalties, etc.)

I have no explanation. All I can think of is that the complexity of the system is getting over some guys' heads. Still, considering we didn't have a single one last year (someone correct me if I'm wrong), I have no clue how that just started this year. Definitely something the staff needs to get fixed right now.

Players aren't communicating. I watched Byrn on the one and Sam told him to get off, then Byrn proceeded to line up anyway and looked over at Moorehead and realized he was supposed to be off the field.
I don't understand why we try to mix things up right when we finally have success a few plays running the ball. If running the ball is working, picking up yards, keep running it right down their throats. It wears down their defense, eats clock, demoralizes them, etc. That 4 yard loss on 2nd and two on the attempted bubble screen was horrible.
There were so many things I didn't like about this game besides the play calling... The same things everyone else is mentioning - Brewers decision making, stupid substitution penalties, questionable penalties, poor special teams play, defensive breakdowns... Ugh.
I just have to keep reminding myself that we are still a young / inexperienced team. Hopefully we can right the ship. We've seen the good and bad with this team... We just need to grow up and be consistently good.
