Noon games are the bane of Hokie FANS existence. In reality, they are only the bane of Hokie existence in the last few years. In the Beamer bowl streak era, we are 36-8 in games that start between noon and 1. Only recently has the trend started to move downward for noon games. That doesn't take into account poor performance during noon games, but overall, we have a pretty good record for noon games. We have just as many losses in home games that kickoff between noon and 1 as we do games that kickoff after 5 PM/night games.

So, essentially, the trend of noon game losses has followed the trend of overall game losses over the last few years. Proving that noon gametimes have no negative consequence on Hokie success, despite the 'conspiracy' argument they do.

Not sure when the downward trend started, but this was something a guy from TSL posted on Twitter last week. Add in the GT loss to get 8 losses between noon and 1.
I am pissed at the coaches we shouldnt have had 5 illegal sub penalities...Well Paul Johnson should give Frank Beamer a kiss for keeping him employed for another 4 years.

3 interceptions , a blocked field goal , numerous sub & other penalties, receivers running wide open in the final minitues with defense unable to make a stop. This is NOT a well oiled machine!
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Honestly, the saddest part about this loss is seeing how many people let a game between 18-22 year old kids completely ruin their weekends. It was really, really, really bad loss. Life goes on. I'm gonna go the gym.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yeah, really. I love VT football as much as the next guy, but life goes on believe it or not. I'm probably gonna go play GTA to get my anger out and then forget about this loss forever.

I think fans are allowed to be a little displeased right after a bad loss. It's not a character flaw. Do some fans go too far with it...sure. But the double edge there is you need passionate fans. I think for a bit too long VT has had that issue. It's evident in lack of donations, selling tickets, and the steady downhill roll of the program.
Which would you prefer?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Considering that you are posting on a website that is geared towards passionate VT fans, it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that people are taking this one a little harder than most. I don't think that anyone is jumping off a bridge, but this was a game the team was in position to and should have won. You only get so many home games and to lose back to back...with consecutive road trips to division opponents in UNC and Pitt looming...there is a cause for concern.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
No doubt, I totally get why fans are upset. I'm just as passionate as any of them, but you have to balance the passion with perspective. And to be fair, I think most of the fan reaction here is reasonable, but I've seen enough "Fire Frank" and "The season is over" comments in various parts of the interwebs to see that there are fans who've lost perspective, and to me, that's really sad.

Amen brother. I put all that negative energy to good use and ran my best mile splits in a year. As D Wade likes to say, "it isn't the number of times I get knocked down that counts, but rather the number of times I get up." Shake it off Hokies, not all is lost. In spite of the current wave of emotion, we can all clearly see, this team is turning a corner. Trust in the process!

Asked if he might 're-examine starting QB given Brewer's performance, Frank Beamer says "We're going to look at everything."— Hokies Journal (@HokiesJournal) September 20, 2014

Does everything include looking at his coaching staff and himself? We've had these substitution penalties all season, the O-line has largely been ineffective all season, and Brewer's decision making is getting worse every game. Thinking about that OSU makes my head hurt after the last two weeks.

HA! No. Not even close. I'm not convinced Scot is the issue at this point. There were a couple of egregiously bad play calls today but I think Brewer said it best today. Take away the three picks and we have a W. Can't really blame Lefty for that. Except maybe as the QB coach, not the OC, and he's only been Michael's QB coach for a couple of months.

It comes down to execution. Critical mistakes at critical times. When the guys execute, we can roll. We've seen that at times. When they break down (O-line turns to Swiss cheese, turnovers), it goes to hell. We had a big turnover on the offensive side of the ball, and this is really the first season Loeffler has with "his guys" and trying to implement his scheme. This year will be up and down and will be dependent upon our players' growth. If we're still doing this next year, I start seeing more merit in your concerns.

Waah. My senior season was 1989, Frank's first year.
A .500 season was nowhere NEAR a bowl back in those days, even if you got there. We were about two seasons removed from still having VMI on the schedule. Frank was a new coach. And the old coach got us NCAA sanctions that cost us scholarships. We played UVa the second game of the season. We went 2-9.
Let THAT sink in.
You're above .500 with two bowl games so far, so keep some perspective.

I am sick and tired of hearing Virginia Tech fans trash this team. First it is just a game. Second I watched a young team play their asses off and now we turn on them. Do you really think that helps?
Yes they made mistakes, but we all do. We put these 18-23 year old AMATEUR athletes on a pedestal, worship them, then turn the second they slip up. I am embarrassed by all of the fans I have interacted with today that blamed this loss on everything but the fact that the team got beat. Please stop the complaining and move on with your life.

Well said. I was very critical of the mistakes made today, and I was very disappointed with the outcome, but I can see that these guys are, to paraphrase Bud, "playing their nuts off." The fans in the stadium hung in with them until the bitter end, and that is a good thing, even if the scoreboard didn't show us the outcome we wanted.

I wonder if we had lost the OSU game would the butthurt be so bad? Maybe that game gave us unrealistic expectations to a fan base that is craving any kind of a return to the late 90s- early 2000s VT era. Also, this team does a lot of things that give you hope and then does things that take that hope away. I loved the crowd support from what I saw on TV and given that Pitt lost and ECU is running the scoreboard up on UNC, the Coastal race is not over by a long shot. That being said...we should be 4-0 right now, and I'm not sorry for saying that.

Yes, I think the fanbase definitely went crazy after the OSU game. I was on cloud nine after the win, but the day after when I had sobered of that feeling, I made the conscious effort to remember that one win does not mean much unless you keep doing it. What the OSU game did was show us what this team could be, but not necessarily who we are.

We lost 4 games in row against FBS teams at Lane....whens the last time that happened? It hurts because we shot ourselves in the foot in all these games.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I dont think anybody would disagree with you. True, the players made some bonehead plays, but that doesnt upset me. There are several things that do:
-Up 7 in the 4th quarter have the ball 2nd and 1 and run a passing play that almost gets picked off, loses 5 yards and is snapped with 26 seconds left on the play clock. Thats a problem.
-Penalties. substitution and otherwise. No excuse for all the blocks in the back etc etc
-Penalties that were not called. GT held several times on their drive that tied the game. If these penalties had been called, we win the game. Period
Brewer made some real bad throws, but I have to think he gives us the best chance to win. He has shown some real good signs. He's a gamer and lets hope he gets things ironed out, he could be a good one by the time the year is over.

I agree in principle. However, don't confuse criticizing the coaches with trashing the players. The players are amateurs, but the coaches are highly paid professionals who can and should endure criticism when they fail in their charge. There's nothing anti-VT for criticizing the coaching mistakes that have led to this two game slide, and the general downward trend of the program over the last few years.
I agree, legit trashing of the players is bullshit, and I'm disappointed at it. But in general I'm seeing way more criticism heaped on Beamer, Foster and Lefty, and they're fair game.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
So when they screw up, we're supposed to just say "good try" and give them their orange slices?
Look, I get your point; I truly do. But if the rhetorical we worships them, and they accept it (and they do), then they need to be the men they are (they are legal adult men, able to serve and die for their country) and take the criticism.
And I'm not even as live-and-die with the games as I used to be. I've been fairly blase about these games, even though they were not only winnable, but we SHOULD have won them both. (Yes, ECU destroyed UNC this week. But they should have, because UNC was the most overrated #21-ranked team in the history of the #21 rank. And if ECU hadn't exposed them, we or someone else would have.)
But we gave these games away, full stop. We allowed - yes, allowed - ECU a huge lead. We followed that up by allowing GT back in the game, even though they run an offense like it's 1909. And we're playing poorly on "D" with a part of the unit that's been only too happy to call itself "DBU" lately. So when you eff it all up, you'd better be ready to wear some abuse.
TL/DR; There's "turning on the players" and there's pointing out the obvious failings they're committing. I'm not "blaming the loss on everything but the fact that the team got beat"; I'm blaming the fact we got beat ON the everything we did wrong.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I don't think saying there is a "doo doo brown product on the feild" is actually pointing out obvious failings... there is a difference from saying things like "we need to run more" or "we need to finish games" or "we need to change schemes" and basically calling the team fecal matter.. I think constructive criticism is more often than not well received here
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Just so I understand, who said they were s--t? My post said "we allowed GT back in the game." Which is essentially the fact. If you want it turned into "constructive criticism," how about: "don't let a team that you're beating by 10-20 points - that generally can't throw the football - get back into the game by throwing the football 30 yards for a winning score." (Especially if you're going to put "#DBU" on HokieTron3000.)
Or, to the actual problem, "You're getting beat deep too much for DBs with talent. Stop that."
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I know. It sucks. It feels like we can't win at Lane anymore. I mean Duke, Maryland, ECU, Georgia Tech.....what the hell? At least we have a Thursday Night Game this year, which will be my first. Plus, we get to prevent UVA from making a bowl game on Black Friday when they are going for that sixth win....
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The funny thing is -- as ridiculously as the game had gone up to that point, after GT tied it I really thought we'd probably pull out a W.
I feel like we have talent everywhere. I don't know what our big malfunction is with the O-line. If they could do anything right with consistency that the play-caller could predict, we'd be undefeated at this point.
I know that it's Searels first year. I know that Newsome made VT the place were TEs & minmally recruited HS Olinemen go to basically be invisible for 4 years while getting a quality degree for free.
But Grimes had some decent recruits, and he and Searels have the pedigree to coach up players.
I'm just going to go with "Cursed."
I don't know when it happened. I don't know if Beamer fired a gypsy housekeeper, or missed to many Sunday sermons, or just broke a few too many mirrors, but I'm thinking we may need to bring in a few Shamans, an Exorcist, Constantine and the Winchester Bros and try to get this thing sorted out.
Because the name & title of the coach doesn't seem to make any difference.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
That's what makes the last 2 weeks bitter pills to swallow, we're not getting beat so much as beating ourselves. Riley biting hard on the pump gave up a TD, Kendall falling extended another scoring drive, all 3 picks were terrible. You take away those plays and it's a different game. To me, the biggest was the interception before the half. Finish that drive, walk out of the locker room up 20-3 receiving the ball and you get the chance to make GT abandon everything they do.

I agree. I should have been more precise with what I was saying, just going too quickly - the fact that we have a game against directional Michigan *gives* him the opportunity to sit, hopefully without any real consequences. I guess I'm a bit more optimistic for our next game and figure it's an opportune time to give the guy rest and the ability to heal when he needs it.

Not surprised, with as hard as he was playing today. He was great. Only one that was, in my opinion. Why can't we have nice things like other teams? :(

Considering The fact that some say the LBs are small and not talented 17 tackles is a beast game. I do believe the numbers are also scheme related thats why the Dline stat line looks pedestrian while supposedly the most talented group.

I'm upset that at halftime I didn't learn how to cut fruit, & instead I had to watch Willie Byrn play the guitar & impregnate every female in the stadium. Oh. And the illegal substitution penalties. Those were bullshit. And, I guess... The part where we had opportunities to put the game away & didn't. But mainly, Willie Byrn. My wife was there!!! Not cool Willie. Not cool at all.

All I'm gonna say right now is if we get another illegal substitution I may just do a swandive right off of the south endzone mezzanine. Today was the 4th game. No excuses for all of that. That's about as positive as I can be right now. I'll be back after a nap and some food in my belly.

Too be fair, we never applaud the times that we substitute correctly. I'm going to do that from now on. Something along the lines of, "Did you see how well we just substituted players?! It was seamless! No flags anywhere!" It makes you appreciate the subtleties of the game.

Better to have one (or a few) places that people want to vent, rather than having a few dozen rants pop up as their own threads that get flooded with stuff. Though I will say, despite the pain of this loss, people are reacting better than after ECU.

True, but at least it seems a bit better. After Duke last year, there were 10 posts in the first hour where everyone ranted about something or thought they were an absolute expert on everything. That was painful. At least we're confined to a couple of threads now.

IMO any chance at nailing Kevin Tolivier just went out the window.
I don't think that came out the way you meant it to.
Or maybe it did -- I don't judge.
I don't know how realistic a chance that was from the get go, but if landing recruits came down solely to winning games UVA wouldn't have a team.

What the OSU game did was show us what this team could be, but not necessarily who we are.
Cheers!

We lost 4 games in row against FBS teams at Lane....whens the last time that happened? It hurts because we shot ourselves in the foot in all these games.
Per Andy's write-up (http://www.roanoke.com/sports/columns_and_blogs/blogs/andy_bitter_virgin...), that last happened spanning the 1978-1979 seasons (I guess that means FBS equivalent at that point).
He's a gamer and lets hope he gets things ironed out, he could be a good one by the time the year is over.
welcome to college football.
I don't think saying there is a "doo doo brown product on the feild" is actually pointing out obvious failings... there is a difference from saying things like "we need to run more" or "we need to finish games" or "we need to change schemes" and basically calling the team fecal matter.. I think constructive criticism is more often than not well received here
Just so I understand, who said they were s--t? My post said "we allowed GT back in the game." Which is essentially the fact. If you want it turned into "constructive criticism," how about: "don't let a team that you're beating by 10-20 points - that generally can't throw the football - get back into the game by throwing the football 30 yards for a winning score." (Especially if you're going to put "#DBU" on HokieTron3000.)
Or, to the actual problem, "You're getting beat deep too much for DBs with talent. Stop that."
I know.
One of the many bad things about moon games: loses ruin my interest in every other game on TV.
Also, lack of oxygen.
Oh no
Injuries on top of losses are just the worst. Let's hope Chase gets better. Maybe he'll be able to sit out Saturday's game. Gotta hope so...
If he suffered a concussion he SHOULD sit. Period.
Not in the mood to to post anything positive right now.
Paul Johnson even had that smug asshole face when he was shaking Beamer's hand at the end of the game.
Good for him. Beamer and his staff get out coached way to often these days.
I find that extremely sexist and demeaning.
?
Me too. So I upvoted it.
I just jumped on top of a table and Yelled it!
you have to not watch the first half of the next game...
Nope. The whole game. But you'll be interviewed on national television when it's over.
I was going to come back and post that in a couple of days....(thanks for ruining the joke):p
What's with the DV's? DV's are for offenses, not for taking offense.
Yea, I read that remark in sarcastica. Again, everyone's on a hair trigger after a loss...
First step is admitting it. More important step is learning and never doing it again.
Hahaha, that is the dumbest thing I've read in a long time...
Why? He's absolutely not wrong.
Well it was intended as sarcasm...but it clearly didn't translate, thus the negative votes. Oh well, at least he knows he played a key role in the loss.
You gotta use the sarcastica tag, man.
Way to own it, young man.
Now... LEARN.
All of these silly fights with various fans on social media... Going to be a long week if you let it take you over. I've just recently decided I'm not going to let it take me.
Clearly we just haven't eaten enough avocados. I say we fire Beamer and hire Coach Avocado!
I guess they can deny my pussy touchdowns.
Sad face.
Why do threads like this exist?
Better to have one (or a few) places that people want to vent, rather than having a few dozen rants pop up as their own threads that get flooded with stuff. Though I will say, despite the pain of this loss, people are reacting better than after ECU.
Though as we type, more threads popping up. May hit those few dozen.
True, but at least it seems a bit better. After Duke last year, there were 10 posts in the first hour where everyone ranted about something or thought they were an absolute expert on everything. That was painful. At least we're confined to a couple of threads now.
Haha, improvement.
ECU is stomping the university of non-compliance, and BYU is opening up its lead on LOLUVa. So there's that.
I'm completely fine with rooting against miami, too.
What happened? Where am I? Who am I? I'm..... lost.......
ECU 70 pts on UNC.
